"So nothing, huh?" Harrison interpreted. "Okay. Well. Great news. You're as broke as the rest of us. Basic facts."
At least he had stopped crying.
"One, monsters exist. Demons, ghosts, you name it. You've seen them, right? Moving shadows. s**t where it shouldn't be. Two, for centuries they been hunting people. People are prey. A food source. Not us, though. Three. You got to be a specific kind of person to be here. To be a hunter."
Harrison stuck his book in one of his extra equipment pockets.
"Let's walk and talk. Don't think I can summon in here anyhow."

Mikael could hardly believe what he was hearing. Demons? Monsters? "I've never seen them!" And it was, from his perspective, true, any encounters he'd had with the shadows in his life had been put down to his father, no one questioned his nightmares or the things that had upset him and distracted him from school, not even him. "And why would they be hunting us? I don't want to be a hunter."
He closed the distance and latched onto the man's coat almost out of instinct, trying to keep him where he was. "I don't want to go." he whined. "Don't make me. I don't want to be that kind of person."

Harrison turned. "Ok. Well. Let's start with the biggest, most important questions. Do you like being alive."

"That's a stupid question." he sniffed again. "Of course I like being alive! Who doesn't?!?"

"Great so far. Okay. Next question. Do you like sleeping on the floor."

"No." he said, apparently heartened by the fact that he could actually answer these questions. "I like to sleep in a bed." The blonde man though looked like he could sleep anywhere. Even rocks. Maybe that was what had happened to him, he found himself thinking. "I never sleep on the floor."

Once again the hope dissapeared from Mik's world and he was forced to come to terms with the fact he had no choice here and now. All over again it felt like his stomach had gained a lot of heavy rocks and that he wanted to simply lie on the floor and mourn his loneliness. His life wasn't fair. He'd only said those things because it had sounded cool. He wanted to take it back.
But even through his hopelessness he followed Harrison because it was better to be with the man who'd been helpful - if totally mean - than to find himself alone in the rows of creepy pods.
"Why are you so grumpy?" he asked plaintively, trailing the Moon like a dazed duckling. "Is it because you got beat up?"

"That's part of it," Harrison said. "Being broke and engaged for a year and a half aren't mood-boosters either. Now listen, because this s**t is important. If you're here, it means you got abilities. You can see things other folks can't see. And that makes you a threat, and those monsters would have liked nothing better than to get you before the organization did. There's safety in numbers, and the island itself protects us."
At least, it used to.
"You heard of Avalon?"

Hughes seemed like he had a lot of problems Mik thought sympathetically, before quickly replacing this concern with his own panic. He had a lot more problems on his plate than this guy, he was sure. He hadn't just been kidnapped and separated from his mother, hell, he looked like he'd been here for years.
"I think you guys maybe got it wrong." he hazarded. "I've never met any monsters." He paused then corrected himself. "At least not the monsters from the movies. We just wanted to get away from my dad, that was all." He didn't feel safe here, he felt vulnerable and alone and every time he mused on this fact he wanted to cry all over again.
"Never heard of it." he said. "What is it?"

"You're lucky you didn't. It's the island King Arthur ended up at. He's the one who started this whole thing, back when monsters were in charge. They're not like you or me, made up of meat and bones. The things we fight are made of emotion energy. Fear. And the reason humanity struggled for so long is you can't fight Fear with regular weapons. You need Fear to fight Fear. Excalibur, you know, like, the Sword in the Stone. He used to be a Fear creature, but he teamed up with Arthur to help us out. They kicked a** until the monsters had to go hide in their own ******** world, and we been keeping the peace since then. You being here means you can see monsters, but you being awake means you got a partner. Like Arthur and Excalibur."

Mikael listened and tried very hard to keep a straight face. He'd classed the other man as very sane and solid, sure he spoke a bit about monsters and demons but so did the best of people. But when he veered off into his lecture about King Arthur and magic swords, his eyes began to glaze over. He was mad. He'd been woken up by a madman, that or this was another bizarre dream and he wasn't awake at all. "You are saying I get a magic sword? Which erm. Used to be a monster?" Saying it out loud was completely ridiculous, imagining himself wielding some medieval sword against the forces of darkness.
"Ja höger." he said under his breath. "That um. Sounds pretty ridiculous."

"Doesn't have to be a sword. Hammers, maces, bows, axes, any kind of weapon. Won't necessarily be a monster, either."
Now out of the podroom, they walked through the hallways of the life labs.
Harrison held up his hands, and in a flash of light his fists were filled with a pair of cutlasses, soaked with energetic pink circuitry. The larger one had a fanged skull on the hilt, and cords out the back. The glow was strange, and ethereal, and runes decorated the length of the sword.
"Mine's a ghost. His name is B0nez."

Mikael had Harrison marked as a Very Scary Person. It was difficult not to when he had more muscle than the blonde boy had ever seen in one place and scars that were very definitely not from a conventional accident. So on edge to begin with, when he summoned two very intimidating weapons out of NOWHERE the boy leapt back several feet.
"OH!" he yelped, before cowering pitifully at the blades. "Don't hurt me!"

"I'm not going to stab you. Why the ******** would I stab you. Calm down. I got him out so you could look, not touch." He turned the blade over. "See. He's got like. Magic runes and s**t all over him."
