In the end it was suddenly close as long, bladed claws caught and tangled in the trailing length of her braid. It pulled and slowed her for a fraction of a second before they slid cleanly through her hair, slicing off the bottom few inches. The mass of her hair was freed from ordered constraint, blinding her enough to make her pace more cautious where once it had been sure.

Every near miss was drive to keep going, keep trying, though he did not get impatient, everything he did was calculated. It was no brash scramble but instead a very conscious effort to push himself as hard as he could. It couldn't be kept up, already a stitch was making it difficult to breathe efficiently. But his focus did not break, fixed and focused on the blaze of wild red before him.
What he lacked in fitness he made up with a complete disregard for his own body. He fell and stumbled again and again and every time he pulled himself back up with shivering muscles driven by sheer steely will.
Butch whined, difficult to understand.

And any time she faltered or fell behind there were claws at her back.

The jungle suddenly broke open to flat farmlands. It was a long, straight shot across and where America was once nimble, now she was fast. Now she was a perfect series of seemless motions joined together in a body that had been worked and primed for this exact moment.

The flat expanse collected with interest on Lawr's wobbly and exhausted legs as he got free of the jungle, and there was no way he could catch up with the other hunter. Butch was nonplussed and disappointed, urging him to keep going. But no amount of will past a certain point could keep him going, he'd been starved for a considerable amount of time and had been running on empty. He missed a single step in the pursuit and went down. He didn't bother to get back up again, rolling onto his side to try and reign back in his breathing and calm his thudding heart.
Pulling the gauntlets to his chest he simply lay still and listened - he didn't expect her to come back.
even without actual lungs he could hear the ghost's rapid ragged breathing.
He was as close to angry as he got like this, restless and feeling far from his usual perfection, drenched in sweat and streaked with blood where shallow scratches had nailed his skin. There was a strange, hollow void in the usual calm silence and he found himself wanting to fill it with someone elses agony just because.

She didn't even look back, instead caught up in her moment of here, now, free, perfect; Stryker echoing every though and motion. It wouldn't last. And when she slowed and the world became relevant once more, the sense of smug victory would brighten her day only as ling as it took to reach the dorms again. He couldn't keep up with her in the places she was best and fastest and most familiar, and one day she might be able to truly use his weakness against him. But for now they slept in the same building, and being able to outrun a man was only so helpful when you slept only a few minutes apart.
Running a hand ruefully through the ragged trim of her hair, America made her way to the showers. It was too terrible, and Kostya would trim it for her late. But still the fact that Lawrence had been able to physically alter her once again made her stomach twist with unhappy discomfort.
