" 'Unfortunately' because while I am incredibly lucky and my father understands my passion, the rest of the nobility doesn't. And as you know, what just one person thinks could change a lot." Naevius did consider herself very fortunate that her father wasn't as oppressive as some of the noble lords. Sometimes she often forgot that some people's parents weren't as open as hers was. As was clear when Ichil answered her question.

It made Naevius frown even though she had no control over how Ichil's parents treated her. Of course, with Ichil's father being an officer she supposed part of it may just be trying to keep her safe. "I wish things didn't have to be like that. But I hope that you have the chance to fall in love and not have to be forced to marry someone. I probably will have to try to marry someone of as high a station as possible. My second uncle may even arrange it." There was a sense of dread in her voice. It might even be okay if her father arranged it, then at least she knew she would get a little bit of a say in it. But if her second uncle, the king, arranged it, there was no telling what would happen.

Somehow the conversation had found its way from beast taming to arranged marriages. It was something Ichil hated to think about. Her father and mother had been arranged by her paternal grandfather, and while they got along well most of the time there was a sort of cold familiarity she couldn't place. Her mother had told her once that marriage is only the beginning and love learns to grow, but what was this love? In all of her years she had barely seen her parents embrace, let alone kiss or laugh together. She didn't want any of that.

"I don't see how it would matter to my father," she admitted, her voice dropping in volume and strength. She sighed, thinking of the noblemen she knew near her age and how little she wanted to do with them. Her time out in the city might net her a common beau, but her father would be staunch in his opinion, she knew that. "Our fathers think it the proper thing to do, and our mothers tell us it isn't so bad because it's all they know. Some day I hope to fall in love, marriage or not." She paused briefly, and a bit of a wicked smirk appeared. "Preferably not, of course."

Suddenly, Naevius felt really sad talking about arranged marriages and what not. All she could do was hope that maybe things would be different for her, for them. As much as she hated to admit it, Ichil was probably right. It wouldn't matter to most fathers, Nae hoped with her whole heart that it would matter to hers.

It seemed Ichil was feeling much the same on the subject as she sighed. For everything, Naevius did hope to get married someday and have children of her own. Though Ichil's wicked smile told her that she would rather be on her own. "At least you have your mother to help you through it. Mine died when I was young. Hopefully yours will do what she can to make it easier for you if you do have to though." She offered, it was a small bit of encouragement, but it was really all she could offer. Perhaps if she meddled she could more, but she doubted Ichil would like that very much.

Naevius' attempt at comfort only served to annoy Ichil. What kind of reassurance was that? 'When your life is falling apart around your ears, at least you'll have your mother.' Her mother already bent to her father's every beck and call, and perhaps she would be able to offer advice for living with a strange man, but the prentice didn't want to hear it. What about the wedding night? She was far too young to be bearing children and wanted nothing more than to escape the bonds of nobility tied so tightly around her wrists. Her smirk fell and she shook her head.

"I'm sorry to hear that." It was all she could think to offer at the time, and considered making it their parting words. It had not been Naevius' fault for this thread of conversation, though. It wouldn't do to be rude to someone who expressed similar beliefs.

It seemed her attempt at reassurance wasn't something that was appreciated or considered to be comfort. "I didn't mean to through a wrench into anything. It's really no problem. It happened when I was young so I don't really remember her." All Naevius could do was shrug and try to ignore the awkward silence that started growing between them.

"I suppose I've kept you long enough. It was really nice talking with you, I really enjoyed it." Nae said honestly. "If you need anything, please let me know." She said, ending their interaction with a smile. It was the least she could do, was smile and hope that the last bit of their conversation hadn't left a sour taste in Ichil's mouth.

She had enjoyed it? Well, it had been enjoyable up until the most recent moments. Maybe Ichil should go back and try to weasel some wine out of the soldiers. Very few things weakened her constitution, but the thought of marriage was one of them.

"If you're ever feeling the need for rebellion, I'm sure you can find me," Ichil offered finally, smiling a little, "I should like to hear about beast taming some day." Just... not right now.
