"Only the barest of stories," replied Lokesvara with a note of regret. "I heard that there was once a beautiful and peaceful tribe of humans that lived here, but they were struck down with a disease that left nothing behind but their stone buildings. But others have said the opposite, that this was a warlike people who were destroyed by the very foes that they attempted to enslave."
She shook her head a little. "What this says to me is that no one truly knows anything. I doubt we ever will."

"I see," said Ravindra slowly, letting his voice trail off into silence. It was indeed very peaceful in here, and pleasant to be out of the rain. He gave his mane a little shake, sending small droplets spraying back into the air. He watched as Lokesvara did the same, though her hair was much more difficult to toss with its greater length and volume. When they had both finished and looked more settled, he decided it was time to work back to the reason of his visit.
"Is this a good place for the reading?" he asked gently, hoping she didn't think he was attempting to rush her. He really was eager to know the history of his soul.

"Yes," said Lokesvara. "I'm ready now." She took a deep breath, the first part of her calming ritual. It was best to have a clear mind for this sort of thing. "Please stay still. You may feel a little strange, but it will not harm you. If you find it distressing, please tell me and I will stop." She had never yet found a soquili that was upset by the process, but she thought it was best to tell them nevertheless. She thought it gave them some assurance, that what she was doing was not dangerous.
"I'm going to start now," she said, taking another several deep breaths and staring intently into Ravindra's eyes.
As she did so, the world around her seemed to go dark. The soft sounds of the rain ceased, all dying down until it was just her and Ravindra in her perception. She saw him as he was now, a soul inhabiting a vessel. What sort of vessels had his soul been housed within before?

At first, Ravindra felt nothing. Lokesvara was staring into his eyes in a piercing manner, but there was nothing more to it than that. Then, he too started feeling a little strange. It was not nearly so strong as the effects upon Lokesvara herself, but he almost felt like the rest of the world was growing more distant. It was like he was standing deep within a cave and looking out at the world, but the world was a far-off place that he was not part of.
His eyes felt like they were locked onto hers. Staring at her like that, he was struck by a sense of strangeness. He had thought she was a young mare, but now she felt ancient. He couldn't explain it to himself, because she still had the exact same appearance, but he felt like he was staring at the oldest soquili he'd ever known.

For the space of several heart beats, Lokesvara stared into the soul of Ravindra. Her face looked briefly questioning, as if she saw something she didn't expect. She only wore this expression for a moment, and soon it was gone, replaced by the same intense focus. She stayed like this a moment longer before breaking the trance, blinking as the rest of the world seemed to rush back in around her.
She inhaled quickly a few times, as if catching her breath. That had not been a difficult reading in particular, but it always took energy to do so.

"Well, that was all very interesting." said a caustic voice from the doorway. Viserys Targaryen stood at the entrance, watching them archly with one brow quirked upwards. He hadn't heard the introduction. All that he knew is that there were voices, then there were these two staring deeply into each other's eyes in some unimpressive ruin. He'd come over here looking for some shelter himself, but apparently this one was taken by some bizarre and failed romantic venture. He glanced between the two of them. The angeni looked somewhat impressive. She wore far more gold than he did. That crown of hers could buy the loyalty of a company of mercenaries for some time. The flutter was less interesting to him, but flutters rarely were. He considered them barely better than the air-headed usdia. They were tiny and spent their time smelling flowers. They rarely had anything that he considered interesting to say.

The other stallion's voice cut through and jarred Ravindra to the bone. He'd just experienced one of the more mystical experiences of his life, and now there was some random kalona halfbreed making snarky comments. A kalona-kirin, to be exact.
Ravindra squinted. It was not hard to see the similarities between this stranger and the leader of the khalasar, Daenerys Targaryen. They had the same silvery blond hair, and similar physical features. Same silver horns. Same violet eyes. His retort died in his throat. Was he looking at a relative of Daenerys? Had he somehow come from the khalasar and followed him over? Dazed and confused, Ravindra could only blink. In his current state of mind, he had no idea how to respond.

Lokesvara was somewhat less forgiving than Ravindra. After coming out of her trance state, it was especially grating to be intruded on. She had known many pleasant kalona crosses before, but something about the look of this one told her that he was not as friendly as some of the others she had met. Ordinarily she still would have treated him with some measure of politeness and respect, but after her reading, she did not have the mental energy to spare on him.
"You are interrupting something private and important," she said flatly, looking the stranger directly in the eyes. "Please leave. If you have business with the Padmapani herd, continue north to find them. If not, be aware that you are on the edges of their territory."

Offended, Viserys drew his head back. The angeni was treating him like a mongrel, and the idiot flutter was staring at him slack-jawed, like he'd never seen another soquili before. "Fine, I apologize if I interrupted your tryst." With a sneer, Viserys turned and left. He didn't want to have any business with soquili of such low character.
He considered what the mare had said, that this was the territory of some Padmapani herd. Could they be potential allies in his quest to regain his throne? Viserys cast a dark glance behind him to where he could still see the mare's jewelry glittering in the dark. No, if the Padmapani herd were anything like those two, he didn't want to have anything to do with them.

Even after the stranger left, all Ravindra could do was blink. What had just happened? They had been doing their reading one moment, then interrupted, and now Lokesvara had chased off the stranger entirely. He wished the stranger had stayed around long enough for him to get his name. Now all he could do was describe him to Daenerys and see what she had to say, but he knew she would have questions if this fellow had some connection to her.
"Do you know who that was?" he asked hopefully, looking over to Lokesvara. Maybe the stallion was a frequent irritation in this area. If that was the case, she might be able to answer some of his questions. If not, he supposed it might just have to remain a mystery a while longer.

Lokesvara frowned after the stranger, but felt a little chagrined at the same time. She had not behaved excellently there. She was a representative of the herd and an angeni of the heavens. She knew she had to hold herself to high standards. She thought about following the stranger, explaining, and apologizing, but decided against it. He didn't seem in the mood for talking.
"No, I don't know who that was," she sighed. "He's not part of the herd, so he must be some sort of traveller. If he was in a large group we probably would have heard about it by now, so he might be traveling alone." He had probably just been looking for shelter, and she'd chased him off. She chewed at her lip guiltily at the thought.

That had somewhat spoiled the mood. Lokesvara looked perturbed and Ravindra felt the same. He felt somehow embarrassed by the encounter, like the stallion had interrupted something secret. At the very least, he had truly interrupted something very deeply personal. It was hard to even work back to the subject again, but Ravindra still had questions unanswered.
"I hope he won't come back," he said, with a glance cast in the direction the stranger had left in. "But since he doesn't appear to be returning for now..." Hopefully, he watched her, curiosity possessing him. "What did you see?" It was finally time to hear what he had journeyed here to learn. What was the history of his spirit? He yearned to know the answer....

Distracted as she was, Lokesvara knew that she had made a promise to Ravindra and needed to fulfill it. There would be time to talk to Hayagriva about the stranger later. She shifted her wings, trying to get back into a calmer mental state. She took a few deep breaths before continuing.
"What I saw, was..." She hesitated. He would be disappointed by the answer, she knew that. She hated to bring sadness or disappointment to those she did her readings for, but it was not in her nature to utter falsehoods. "What I saw was nothing. Your soul is new, you have not had previous incarnations." She had looked into his soul and seen nothing. This was not unusual, but most seemed to want to hear that they had been a fearless warrior or a wise leader in a previous life.

"Ah." For a moment Ravindra stood silently, locked in thought. No previous incarnations. It was indeed not what he had expected. He had thought that his soul might be an old one, and that his current life was built upon generations of previous experience. Apparently he had no spiritual foundation for his current existence.
"And you're certain?" he asked slowly, still trying to gather his thoughts. "Does it mean anything in particular?" What sort of significance did that have? How were new souls generated? He had his answer, but it raised more questions than anything. His mind was now abuzz with yet more curiosity. Perhaps the angeni knew some of these secrets and could tell him. Could she possibly know the origins of spirits? He looked at her, searching and waiting.

"I am certain, but you should not see this as a bad thing." She smiled softly at him, hoping that she might lessen the blow. "I don't believe it means anything in particular. The spirits, Bodhisattvas, gods, or whatever else might be out there work in ways we are not meant to understand." She had not been able to discern any sort of pattern in rebirths.
"But perhaps you should take this as an auspicious sign. Your spirit is new. The live you live now could shape the way you are reborn throughout the ages." Or could determine the final resting place of his spirit. That was something she knew little of.
