She cursed inwardly at her clumsiness. Ara frowned as she heard the desperate sound of Detraeus voice. She gritted her teeth as the dragon roared, its attention focusing in on the two of them, seemingly unaffected by the spell that was slowing both her and Detraus down. The desperate need to move, to get out of the dragon’s way clawed at Ara, begged for her to move. She willed her arms to move, pulling at her magic. Her limbs moved at a snail’s pace, unable to move a gracefully as her magic called for. Panic, fresh, clawed at her chest as she tried to call up her magic by sheer willpower alone. Her magic bucked, the wind around her flailing as she poured all her energy into making her magic work without the movement of her body. As the dragon charged, the wind around her focused in front of her. She waited, counting the seconds as the dragon moved closer. Moments before the dragon would collide into her she shoved at her magic. A dense, swirling orb of air pushed out, slamming into the dragon’s chest and sent it flying backwards. She latched onto the dragon’s own wind, bending it and molding it to her own will. Her focus sharpened in on the dragon and soon the wind was cutting into the beast’s flesh, as if knives were flying through the whirlwind she was creating. One good slash from her wind and the dragon was down, disintegrating into dust before its whole body could even fall to the ground. As the dragon disappeared, she felt the spell ripple away. She gasped air into her lungs as she fell to her knees. Sweat trickled down her forehead as she breathed heavily. The strain of using her magic, without a channel for it to flow through, had drained her more than she had liked. It had to be done though. She remained on her knees, pulling air into her lungs as she waited for her racing hear beat to calm.

Room 5 First die: If the number is 1, you encounter an Ayrala dragon. If the number is 2-3, you encounter a Kiandri dragon. If the number is 4, you encounter a Firani dragon. Second die: If the number is 1-2, nothing happens and you fight as normal. If the number is 3, you feel especially brave and daring and your luck chance is increased by 10%. [So if your normal luck range is normally 61-100, it is now 51-100. You cannot go below 6-100, though.] If the number is 4, the dragon roars and any Bonded Drakein quake in fear. (No change to your luck chance, but any Bonded Drakein cannot be RPed as helping during this fight.) The air grows damper as you continue on, a few small puddles appearing on the floor from time to time, especially in lower laying areas and against walls. This room has several large stalagmites jutting from the floor. From this point, treat as a normal dragon hunt and every participant rolls to see what the result is. If you win, do you: A) Move deeper into the cave? Roll 2 4-sided dice and go to "Room 6" B) Move closer to the entrance? Roll 2 4-sided dice and go to "Room 4" C) Leave? Go to "Exit" Detraeus’ limbs quivered when the grip of the spell loosened and dropped. It felt like having been coated, tip to toe in clinging sludge only to have the lot of it dry up at once and crumble into sand and dust around him. He drew a heaving, shaking breath, and slumped half his weight against the nearest wall, shutting his eyes and willing his knees to hold him up. He would not fall in front of watching eyes. When he managed to wrestle his pulse back under control and draw breaths that felt rational as opposed to the last gasps of a dying man, he pushed forward, brow pinching at the sight of Araceli. Part of him suggested he ought to help her up. She had just saved his life— ‘ Nevermind that it might have been her who triggered the trap to begin with.’ —and he owed her that much…didn’t he? But his legs could barely hold his own weight for the moment, so he moved into the room instead, lifting the hard earned ayrala orb and stashing it with the others before moving back towards his dovaa companion. Exhausted. She looked exhausted, still crumpled on her knees, dark in the face and limp from over-expenditure of energy. Curbing the urge to wince, Detraeus grunted and held out a hand. “Up.”

She looked up, blinking as Detraeus came into focus. She glanced down at his hand, hesitating a moment before placing her own hand in his and pulling herself up. She let a sigh out as her knees felt weak and threatened to fail her. “I’m fine. I’ll be fine.” She reluctantly let go of his hand, trusting in her own body to help hold her up. She closed her eyes briefly as she took in a deep breath. As she let it out slowly she opened her eyes back up and glanced towards Detra. An apology was on the tip of her tongue but she pushed it back. He had seemed so desperate when he’d said her name. As if the slowing of his body had been more than just an annoyance. Better she keep her mouth shut about having triggered the spell than to say anything. Ara glanced towards the only exit the cave offered, other than the one they’d just come out of. “Guess there’s only one way to go…unless you want to go back?” She questioned as her gaze shot back to Detraues.

30/2 = 15 exp 15 + 25 = 40/55 exp +1 Firani Orb Detraeus felt a small ripple of tension bunch in his shoulders when her fingers curled around his, accepting the hand up, but she had saved his life. He owed some spark of gratitude, and when she let go again, he closed his hand, bunching it into a loose fist at his side and looking away to distract from the strange, unwelcome warmth back in his cheeks. At her question, though, he snorted. The binding spell — whatever it had been — had left him shaky. Swamped him with that overwhelming sense of vulnerability. Helplessness. But they had just started to make progress, and the dragons seemed to be getting progressively more challenging, so gods be damned if he was about to turn back now. Wordlessly, Detraeus stalked forward, letting his actions speak for him as he made for the only obvious tunnel on. His companion, he figured, would either follow or turn back as she pleased. Regardless, he did not intend to need her aid again, and her choices were not his concern. He scanned the tunnel walls scrutinizingly as he moved, gauging every step and keeping on the lookout for anything out of place. Markings. Recently disturbed rock. Unnatural looking cracks or indentations. Nothing but dank puddles lined the floor, glistening rivulets of moisture trickling down the dark rock in places. Surprising, Detraeus thought, since the air felt notably hot, but perhaps that was more due to their next adversary than the natural environment of the cave. When he drew closer to the next opening, the familiar dancing contrast of light and shadow characteristic of fire supported his suspicions and seconds later, sight confirmed it: a single, massive firani dragon, awake and alert but temporarily idle. Detraeus slowed his pace, and drew a single arrow from his quiver. “You want to die?” he murmured beneath his breath, barely loud enough to be vocal, and nocked the arrow’s base against his drawstring, eyeing the far cave wall above the head of the waiting dragon. “Come die.” He let the arrow fly. Immediately after, as it cracked into the far rock wall and drew the beast’s attention with a jerk, Detraeus loaded two more, firing into each of the dragon’s newly-spread wings and maiming it enough to earn a furious roar. He darted out of the tunnel as it rounded on him. Of all bad places to be when something prepared to aim a pillar of fire at you, a narrow tunnel with no quick escape or defense mechanism seemed one of the worst. Particularly with Araceli following, potentially, close behind him. Fire billowed along the wall, pools of water on the floor steaming at the barrage of heat, and Detraeus felt the singe of it: searing ripples of scalding air that burned despite him making it well out of the way of the fire itself. As the dragon filled its lungs again, lunging towards him and drawing up for another pillar of fire, Detraeus bolted sidelong — narrowly missing the beast’s claws — yanked free the black dagger at his hip, and buried the blade in its throat. He twisted, grimacing at the waves of nearly-unbearable heat radiating from the dragon’s scales alone, but held his ground, gouging until the light to its magic petered out, and died. Like a candle blown to nothing in a harsh wind. Then, like any dying fire, the dragon dissipated, crumbling to dust at Detraeus’ feet and leaving him glistening with perspiration and relief. Satisfied, he stooped, lifting up his half of the reward and glancing over his shoulder to see if Araceli had followed after all.

If the number is 2, you seem to have triggered an old spell and your movement is slowed. Your luck chance is now reduced by 20%. [If your normal luck range is 61-100, it is now 81-100.] If the number is 3, nothing happens and you fight as normal. If the number is 4, you have encountered a Bognotti instead of a dragon. See "Creatures" below to see stats. You still fight just like in a dragon hunt, only against the creature instead of a dragon. Continuing into the cave system, the walls now start to glisten with moisture where the light hits them. Shadows are becoming darker and more prevalent, but the overall light level is still that of early evening. From this point, treat as a normal dragon hunt and every participant rolls to see what the result is. If you win, do you: A) Move deeper into the cave? Roll 2 4-sided dice and go to "Room 5" B) Move closer to the entrance? Roll 2 4-sided dice and go to "Room 3" C) Leave? Go to "Exit" She stepped into the room, the blazing hot air assaulting her face. Ara winced, looking away as one last blast of fire ripped through the room. Her gaze flicked back to where the dragon and Detraeus had been. She let a breath out as her eyes took him in. A little singed, but alright for the most part. That made her stop in her tracks. At what point had she actually started to care about whether an oblivionite was alright or not? It had been such an easy transition in her mind. One she hadn't quite noticed completely until that moment. She shook her head, moving over to where Detraeus was and picking up her own orb. When she rose, she tilted her head and surveyed his face. His hallow eyes unnerved her, made her unsure of where his gaze landed. Reminded her of her own eyes, that so often had her being mistaken as a hybrid. Singe marks and smudges marred his skin and is if being pulled by some unknown source, Ara reached out. Her thumb brushed over one of the smudge marks on his cheek, removing it from his dark purple skin. As she pulled back, a small blush rose in her cheeks. Her gaze jerked away and she headed for the first tunnel opening she saw. Her mind whirled with thoughts. Questions as to why she had thought to touch him again. He had so obviously not liked it the first time. In her haste to distance herself from what she had just done, Ara paid no attention to where she was going. As she exited the tunnel and came out into the next room she took her surroundings in. It was similar to the cave before the one the firani had been in. This one, however, had no dragon occupying it. She frowned as she glanced around. As a figure shot past her, Ara froze, gaze flitting to a group of rocks off to the right. As she watched, a rather large bognotti made itself seen. A shudder ran through her body as a screech escaped her lips.

10/2 = 5 exp 40 + 5 = 45/55 exp Detraeus’ attention tracked Araceli’s approach, pinned to her as she closed on him. When she lingered, though, not immediately pulling away, his posture stiffened a fraction, eyelids narrowing on her. What did she want with him? Had she really come all this way simply to apologize, and if so, why continue to follow him? Not to mention, she seemed to have a drastically narrower perception of where a person’s ‘personal space’ began and ended, and— When she reached up, Detraeus froze, previously stiff posture going rigid with tension, but she only thumbed over his cheek. A brief, warm touch. There, and then gone. Before he found the tongue to speak, she was turning away again, darting off towards a backwards-looping tunnel, and he felt his pulse thrum in his throat. He swallowed hard and grit his teeth, squaring off his shoulders. Why was she so…? What had she even been doing? Hadn’t he made it clear he didn’t want her touching him? Nobody touched him once he made it clear such advances weren’t welcome. Except, on occasion, Martrae’a. And Casseth, though not in the same way. But— A shrill screech lopped off his line of thought, and Detraeus darted forward without a moment’s debate, rushing after Araceli only to find— —a slightly oversized bognotti. He frowned. Was such a thing really cause for so much worry? After a spare glance towards her, though, his companion did look genuinely out of sorts, and Detraeus classed the information away as a mildly unrealistic fear for future reference. Aloud, he said nothing, and strung his bow. Clicking his tongue to draw its attention, Detraeus backed into the body of the cavern. As soon as he had it lured into open territory, he fired. One. Two, three. Four arrows. As it lay dying, twitching on the cavern floor, he spared another glance towards Ara and then strung two more arrows, pulling back hard and releasing them to puncture deep into the beast’s frontal eye sockets. It stilled, and Detraeus curbed his lip’s instinct to curve up at the corner. “Dead enough?” he asked.

Flinching as the first one buried itself deep into the small beast. The rest of the arrows came in quick succession. She shuddered as she watched the bonotti lay there, twitching, as it died. Her cheeks flushed when Detraeus looked back at her and strung two more arrows. Her eyes were riveted to the arrows as the flew, hard, into the beast's eyes and it stopped moving. She nodded at his question. "Y-yes." She hesitated only briefly before continuing. "Thank you." Ara rubbed her hands up her arms, ceasing the shiver that was running through her body. She knew it was a silly fear, to be afraid of something so small and basically harmless to someone as strong as her but she couldn't help it. "I'm sorry...I just..." She shook her head and looked away. "It's a stupid fear." Ara muttered as she distracted herself by looking for an exit. The only one there was, though, seemed to be through the same tunnel they'd both just came through.

Frowning, doubly as confused as before, he returned to yanking his arrows from the bognotti’s body, wiping the muck on his trousers before tucking them back into his quiver. “All fear is stupid,” he said eventually, stepping away from the corpse. “But sometimes…” He moved back towards the exit, dodging around her as he went, “it is unavoidable. We cope, and move on.” Narrowing his eyes at the sight that greeted him, Detraeus held his ground at the exit to the tunnel. Apparently, in the time they’d been gone, another dragon had chosen to investigate the vacated area, its glistening snout cackling with faint white lightning as it sniffed the area where Detraeus had so recently slain the firani before it. “Company,” he said. “Kiandri.”

He could have scoffed at her, said she was being rediculous for being scared of such a small monster. She frowned as she watched his back. What was it about him that made her second guess her opinions on oblivionites? She wasn't sure. All she knew was that he intrigued her. As they stepped into the cave, Ara felt a tingling over her skin and she knew, even before he said anything, that they were about to face off with a kiandri. The lightning magic of the kiandri was strong against her ayrala magic. Her heart beat picked up its pace as the dragon came into view. Despite her nerves, though, Ara moved, using the wind to her advantage and keeping her scent from blowing towards the dragon. As she neared her goal she let her magic rip free. The wind slammed into the beast, knocking it off balance temporarily. It roared, swiveling around to face her and let loose a bolt of lightning in retaliation. Ara dodged, using her magic to help her soar up into the sky to avoid the attack. She pulled at her magic, forming a whirl wind that she aimed at the dragon. As her magic reached out, the dragon was caught up in the storm and slammed against the far cave wall. It was pinned and as it struggled to pull free from her magic, it opened its snout to let loose another bolt of lightning. As it took in a breath, Ara's magic invaded the beat's lungs, stealing away the very breath the beast needed to live. The kiandri flailed briefly before slowly turning to dust. As Ara let her breath escape between her lips she slowly floated back down to the ground.

While he had seen ayrala dovaa battle in such ways in the past, thanks largely to his observances in Veinrith’s Stadium amongst fellow ‘pit’ fighters, he had never seen this girl perform anything of particular merit. Nothing to truly catch his attention, and while she had not come across as strictly ‘weak’ he had had his doubts. Why follow him, for instance? If she hated oblivionites so, then why put up with his presence unless she wasn’t capable of taking on such things on her own. And what of the arvathi when he had first encountered her on Soudul? Granted, she had managed to take some on, but he had no doubt that, had he left her entirely to her own devices at the time, she’d have fallen to their poison on her own. Here, though, she displayed real strength, and a power that — little as he’d like to admit it — Detraeus envied on a certain level. Power over the air. Controlling every current of wind, no longer a slave to gravity or the temperament of the weather. He could guide his arrows anywhere with that type of magic. As Araceli floated back towards the floor — her long, dark hair a soft billow of shadow about her and her body transcendent, light as a feather drifting towards the earth — Detraeus jerked his chin away and down, swallowing hard. Stupid. Inconceivably stupid. It didn’t matter what her hair did. Or what her magic did. She was just… A girl. A dovaa girl, who hated oblivionites. And he had no business… He had no business, period. He started forward, snatching up his own orb and tucking it away with the rest. “Lead the way, sky princess,” he griped. ‘Conqueror of Kiandri. Master of the art of falling like air.’

Second die: If the number is 1, list all participants and generate a number between them. This participant's luck is halved for this battle. Please recalculate luck chances accordingly. (If you are doing this solo, your luck is halved and you must recalculate your luck chance.) If the number is 2-3, nothing happens and you fight as normal. If the number is 4, you have found a secret tunnel! Do not fight in this room and proceed directly to "Room 17". (This can only occur the first time you enter this room. If you reenter this room and roll a 4, then nothing happens and you fight as normal.) Glowing fungus grows upon the walls of this room, casting a dim light in those areas. The room is still visible, though it is becoming more like twilight in the level of light. There are still puddles in places, so watch your step! From this point, treat as a normal dragon hunt and every participant rolls to see what the result is. If you win, do you: A) Move deeper into the cave? Go to "Exit" Ara bent to pick her orb up, watching Detraeus out of the corner of her eye as she rose back up and stashed the orb away. Her gaze darted around the cave as he spoke, looking for an exit that seemed appealing to her. However, at the words sky princess, her gaze darted back to Detra, narrowing only slightly. Why did he call her such a name if it was only to mock her? She huffed quietly as she turned back to the tunnel opening she had been eying. Without a word, she took off, disappearing into the dark tunnel. As she moved deeper through the tunnel she could see a faint glow starting to climb up the walls. It seemed as if the vegetation here was alive in ways that allowed it to glow. “Strange,” she whispered as she let her fingers brush over the tops of several small, glowing mushrooms. She narrowly avoided stepping into a puddle as the tunnel opened up into a dark cave. The glowing fungus gave the effect of twilight and she let out a breath as she glanced up and around at the sight. In her distraction, though, she never noticed the dragon waiting for her just outside the tunnel exit. As she stepped forward, her eyes darted down just in time to see the incoming tail of the dragon. She grunted as it made contact with her stomach and sent her flying into the wall of the cave. Groaning, she gasped, trying to pull the air that had been robbed from her lungs, back in. Her eyes darted up as she heard the dragon charging. She winced as she forced herself to duck, just narrowly avoiding the tip of its tail as it punctured the cave wall above her.

His eyelids narrowed, though, puzzled, when she drew her fingers over some of the fungi. ‘Strange’ perhaps, to her. On Soudul, such plant life was more than abundant. But he said nothing aloud, his focus primarily on the opening of the tunnel, and as such, he froze at the first rustling of dragon activity, opening his mouth to warn her. Too late, however. She stepped out, and Detraeus grit his teeth with a half-wince as the kiandri’s tail bashed into her. Swearing beneath his breath, he darted out and strung his bow. At least the beast’s attention was distracted, making it an easy target for three quick shots. By the time the dragon rounded on him, already injured, a fourth arrow into its opening jaw and lodged down its throat was all it took to turn it to dust. Easier than a firani, certainly. He stepped forward, ignoring the orbs momentarily — for once — to loom over his fallen companion. He opened his mouth, words like, ‘And you were so graceful last time…’ or ‘Need another hand, wind fairy?’ lingering on the tip of his tongue. Eventually, though, he opted against any of them, none of it worth it, and closed his lips again, stooping to offer her her orb instead and putting his own away. “Up,” he murmured. “Long way to go.”

She winced at the pain in her stomach but forced herself up as Detraeus handed her an orb. She would be bruised tomorrow, that was for sure. At least that was all that would be wrong with her. Ara knew it could have been worse. She wondered just how far this cave system went as she glanced around the now safe cave. She glanced back to Detra, head tilting slightly. In the darkening light of the cave systems he almost blended in. Set next to him, she was blindingly white and stuck out like a sore thumb. Ara rubbed her arms, as if she was fighting off a non-existent chill. Without another word, she continued on, randomly picking a tunnel to disappear in.

Room 7 First die: If the number is 1, you encounter a Kiandri dragon. If the number is 2-3, you encounter a Firani dragon. If the number is 4, you encounter a Peisio dragon. Second die: If the number is 1-2, nothing happens and you fight as normal. If the number is 3, a sudden rock slide closes off the entrance to this room as you enter. You can no longer chose to move closer to the entrance and instead must either move deeper into the cave or leave. [If you have already had this rock slide happen, nothing happens.] If the number is 4, a sudden gush of water fills the room, slowly you down. Your luck chance decreases by 10%. [If your normal luck range is 61-100, it is now 71-100.] More of the glowing fungus grows in this room, aiding what little light has penetrated this far into the cave system. The light reflects off the damp walls and puddles, adding to this effect. If you win, do you: A) Move deeper into the cave? Roll 2 4-sided dice and go to "Room 8" B) Move closer to the entrance? Roll 2 4-sided dice and go to "Room 6" C) Leave? Go to "Exit" Detraeus followed after Ara without comment, his attention still partially devoted to the walls of the tunnels they passed through — wary, and on the look out for any lingering markings of spells that might affect them adversely. Nothing seemed amiss to his eyes, but just as he started to pass her, a minor tremor caught his attention, putting him instantly on alert. Seconds later, a booming CRACK sounded, and the tunnel behind them started with a misty rain of dust that progressed over a few short moments into pebbles and then crumpling boulders. Detraeus reacted on instinct, snatching out for Araceli’s wrist and yanking her forward with him as he darted towards the next open cavern. The ground shook beneath them, though, as though the entire tunnel were suffering from a minor earthquake, and between that and his unexpected pull of contact, Ara stumbled in his grip, her weight an off-kilter drag to his step. His own feet tripped over the shaking ground, unused to dealing with such dissonance except when sparring with Casseth, and he swore beneath his breath, but persisted forward regardless. Mere moments before the tunnel caved in behind them — like an eggshell cracking in under too much weight — the two of them came toppling forward, Detraeus, and then Araceli. Him falling and then her dropping on top of him. Hair everywhere. Shoulder armor digging into his side. He grit his teeth, pulse still fast in his throat from the remaining rush of the near life-or-death experience. And yet, his brain still managed to register that Araceli smelled of the desert wind. Of spices from places he’d never been. And of lightning, and soot, from their most recent battles. Then, as the shock wore off, and the full weight of exactly what position they were in sank in, he tensed. Her body a warm, unignorable presence on top of him. All over him. Everywhere. Pulse picking back up, heat swam for his cheeks and his chest tightened in on itself. “Ara—”
