Not that Uquin could blame her for not believing him - he didn't quite believe it himself. He tried to respect the familiars of those he met, like Nuawahn's creature, but they didn't make sense to him unless they were useful in some way. Still holding her drawing in his hands, he waited until Mella assured him, kindly, that it really was fine. Only then did he pause to pull his satchel around his hip, opening it and carefully settling the fragile image between two pages of a tome he had inside. As he was fiddling with his bag, Mella lost her balance and wobbled a bit.

At first, Uquin fixed her with an exasperated, but almost fond look. Her wince, however, drew his attention, and when she slipped her hand under her sash and it came back with some blood, Uquin, settled his hand on top of his satchel, taking a step closer. As a healer he knew the amount of blood was nowhere near life threatening, but it was no doubt uncomfortable - and since it was caused by that creature Telwren, obviously, he worried about its cleanness.

But Mella seemed frozen by the blood, staring at her hand like it had suddenly fallen off at the wrist. "Talon scratches - I don't envy you. Do you... want me to take a look?" He asked. He didn't want to go tugging her robe aside to peer at her belly without his permission, after they had tried so hard to be friendly with one another. But she seemed so worried that he began to rifle through his bag for a jar of ground leaves he'd learned to harvest while in Jauhar for their antiseptic qualities. In his other hand, he thoughtfully rubbed his fingers along the rosary around his wrist - which he'd been given as a 'focus' for his magical abilities. They were still new to him, however, and he preferred the scholarly approach, personally.

hmmh?? RNG options?? o3o~ ?? Whatchu mean?

That masculine voice pulled her from her trance. She made a small whimpering noise and used her other hand to move her sash and thus Telwren off to the side. The bloodied hand slowly dropped to her side but she was still so uncomfortable having seen her own blood. There was a reason she never learned to be a healer and her trouble with the red liquid was on the list. It was only when Uquin got closer to her did she dare to look down and see the damage done. The first thing she noticed was the tear in the fabric leaving jagged little edges of dark green. Interestingly enough the only blood that she could see from her angle was the few drops on the handle of her small knife that must have fallen from her fingers. It was so red it stood out against the rest of the hilts wrapping. “Please.” She had to look elsewhere rather than at the blood or she might get ill again like she had at the camps. Instead she kept her eyes on Uquin knowing he was a healer and trusting him with her wound no matter how small it was to him to her it was a horror.

The befuddled familiar hissed at them both from the sash but stayed curled up highly annoyed at all this disruption that was going on for its rest. It had been bad enough to have been suddenly jarred and having no support beyond that of the food giver. The hard loud place that moved had been a better fit than this and his food giver had left it to walk. How foolish

Oh >w< When I have multiple ideas for a post, good or bad, sometimes I list them and then do a rng to pick what happens in the post. This way I can pick an option when all the ideas seem to interest me and there is an element of random chance that makes the story more entertaining for me to write out since even I don’t always know what will happen. I am a super sucker for happy ending and try to do my darnest to make sure my characters have them but I’m fine with a little drama along the way. Though Mella’s luck with RNG seems really really bad >w< Like I’ve never had a character who had such a streak with all the bad options. *has actually vetoed a few journal ideas half written because the way the list ran would have just been horrible for Mella* I’ve had one who came close but well she’s evil and a real witch so I didn’t feel all that bad. Mella just to nice to be so evil too though.

Well, Uquin would take that noise as a yes. He gave her a quick, cursory look over her face, then moved to kneel infront of her, glad that his normal height was taller than her own since, at this level, he was only slightly shorter than her midsection. Thanks to Mella tugging her sash aside, he could clearly see the tear in the dark green cloth underneath, and the gash in her stomach - more of a puncture wound.

It was deep - and definitely a scary looking wound, at first glance. He could understand her sudden tension, and wished he had more water to clean it with. As it was, Uquin set his bag down and pulled the jar out, as well as a waterskin, half full of water thanks to his conservation of it. "Lean forward a bit? And pull your shirt up, please?" He asked, a bit curtly but not necessarily unkindly, and when she did so he poured a healthy amount of water into the gash, washing the pooled blood away. Without warning, he popped open the jar (washing his hands by pouring some of the strong smelling liquid over them), then scooped a small amount of salve into his hand (purple, mostly ground leaves soaked in cleaned water) and pressed them into the gash. The leaves stung, horribly - but the pressure of Uquin's hand was constant, and before Mella could pull away he efficiently wound a spool of bandages around her torso, just to keep the leaves pressed into the wound.

"I'm sorry - it should only sting for a few minutes." He said, his voice soft. To most he wouldn't sound very apologetic, but he did look concerned as he stood again, pouring what water he could spare over his purple and blood tinged fingers, peeking at her out of the corner of his eyes. "The leaves clean the wound. By the time we get to Yera, if it still hurts too badly, I can heal it for you, but it really is best to let it heal naturally."

DAmn Uquin you do NOT have a bedside manner at all.

Following his instructions she still winced and her body jerked when the stinging slave was applied. A small squeak escaped her and her hand tightened on her sash and clothes she had pulled aside. Her eyes had teared up not used to this kind of lingering pain. His apology sounded more like words he was used to but she remembered he was a healer so perhaps they were. Still he was doing all this for her. She found she couldn’t met his eyes until he was standing again and looking right at her. The concern she saw there made her regret her thoughts over his apology. Nodding she finally let her sash go and let it slide gently back into place. Telwren stirred and bumped against her bandage but the slave that was there stung more than the bump.

She didn’t know he could heal things in such a manner though the idea of having it healed right away was tempting she would listen to Uquin’s advice on the matter after all he was far more knowledgeable on the matter than she was. The walk to Yera was definitely going to be unpleasant physically. Nodding again she realized she never actually thanked him. “Thank you. Sorry but after all the fighting.. even before it. I’m not very good with blood.” She knew her face was still pale from the feel of it and she still didn’t want to look down at her bloody hand. Bending down she figured she would place her hand on the sand and then be able to wipe it off rather than to waste water. Even though she was careful the action hurt and she immediately regretted it but she knew she couldn’t walk around with blood all over her hand much less into Yera with it. She hissed softly and stood back up wiping off the now soiled pale sand. “We should keep going I don’t want to be found by anything that can smell blood and has sharper teeth than Telwren has talons.” She made a grimace.

Uquin didn't seem aware of his own callousness - though he did furrow his brow and feel guilty at the pain he was further inflicting on her, through this salve. But it truly was the best healing agent he'd heard of. He'd only recently learned how to make it, but he'd heard of it even before then, when he was still trying to learn the art without a proper teacher.

Uquin followed as Mella turned back to continue walking, still letting the sailscale settle under her tunic, for whatever reason. He gave the creature a look, but shook his head with a sigh, musing quietly, only to look up when she apologized. "It... isn't for everyone. You're not the only one with an aversion to blood." He conceded quietly, his tone more soothing than the normally even tones he usually used.

Bending down to wipe her hand didn't seem pleasant, but Uquin didn't interrupt. Instead he moved to take some of the bags that she was carrying, to lessen her load, holding the bags on his shoulder, nodding at her suggestion to hurry. "Talking, raised voices are good to scare off lesser creatures, I've heard. Do you feel up to speaking?" Again his voice dipped at the end, soft and inquiring. Sometimes, when you were in pain, speaking only aggravated your temperament so he wouldn't blame Mella if she preferred to stay silent.

With the healer walking at her side Mella felt a strange sense of ease she wasn’t used to around others. She was surprised when he picked up her belongings. Glancing at him she opened her mouth to stop him since he needn’t do such a thing. His words stopped her. They could move faster if she wasn’t slowing them down. She gave him a waning smile. “Uquin once you get to know me you’ll find that getting me to stop talking is much harder than getting me to talk.” In fact the more worried she was the more likely she was to talk. Wringing her fingers she moved forward not really certain what to talk about. “What made you want to become a healer and how is it you know so much?” The fact he was skilled with balms was amazing enough but then there was the fact he could do magic as well. Uquin was amazing.

A grunt from Telwren made her look down. She fumbled about gently with her sash to check on Telwren. She worried he might have hurt himself along with her during the incident. It took a while to examine the sailscale but thankfully he wasn’t put up to much of a fuss just hissing when she poked him a bit to get him to spread his leg or wind depending. “Well that’s a bit of a relief.”

Even if the gash on her middle wasn't life threatening, he certainly didn't want to tax it too much. And honestly, he wanted to make some small gesture towards her, especially after seeing the pain she seemed in from the application of the medicine. When she spoke, he let out a surprised laugh, looking at her with a slight smirk, his eyebrow raised speculatively. She seemed kind but not as talkative as she claimed - friendly would be the term he'd use. "There is no harm in talking when people are willing to listen." He pointed out with a shrug of his shoulders. He talked, but didn't usually talk too much past the point of politeness, unless asked questions or pried, so listening was something he enjoyed.

To this point his following answer was brief, though he seemed a bit pleased to have been asked in the first place. "I learned to be a novice physician when I was still young- I enjoyed being helpful, is all. The magic came later, since we met actually." After this he didn't elaborate. Just because she was impressed didn't mean he should be getting a swollen pride of this, he reminded himself.

Now watching her fiddle with the beast who had ignorantly sliced her just moments before (why she seemed more afraid of the wound and blood than the talons used to make it he couldn't understand). "Your skill in your trade is undeniable but... how do you defend yourself?" He suddenly asked, looking at her sternly. "The roads were never safe, even before, but now with war... it's dangerous to travel alone, magic or no." He felt concerned for her - to have retreated from the battle, alone if she spoke true, without any skill in battle or visible weapons. Thieves from the jungles and woods could appear and rob her - monsters could dine on her at a moment's notice. At least he had some minimal amount of protection in the form of his magic, but even then he worried for his safety plenty enough.

She gave a small shrug which she immediately regretted. It was true it was nice to talk to those who would listen but that generosity only stretched so far. There were a number of people who were willing to listen only to a point.

She listened intently. It was nice that Uquin had a purpose in his life so young. There were times Mella wondered if what she was doing was really worth it all, and yet she could see herself doing nothing different in life. She was surprised that he had discovered magic latter. She didn’t really know much about magic at all and always assumed it was something one was born with and then just refined. “You must know quite a bit then after all you handled yourself so well in the camps.” She nodded with a certainty about her. Uquin was skilled as she had seen recently.

Her skill? That was perhaps the sweetest thing she had ever heard. Only a shift from Telwren kept her on task with the rest of his words rather than letting her think over those lines and end up blushing furiously. She gave him a smile and moved her bag slightly to the side to show a small set of knives on her leg. “ “To be honest I’m more the kind to hide or flee but I could use this if I really needed to. I don’t usually travel alone. I go with groups and caravans when I can and when I can’t I am very careful.” The small knives were actually to cut and break down certain plants so she could use them in her paints but she thought if she were attacked she might be able to defend herself. It wasn’t quite something she really wanted to put to the test though.

Perhaps that was part of the reason Uquin was loathe to use his magic to heal her worries. He didn't want to become a healer who would rely more readily on the mystical qualities of magic than truly studying the body, or the effects of wounds. Beyond that, he didn't know what his limits were, yet - he fatigued easily from using magic, and the effects were often not what he expected. He didn't find the magic reliable - the effects varied so wildly without practice that he found himself suspicious of the abilities he'd learned. It was true, he had no natural affinity for magic - which probably made it that much harder for his more book-savvy mind to wrap around something so abstract as magic. The same way he puzzled over Mella's art - it simply escaped his complete understanding.

Uquin opened his mouth to argue with her compliment, but then simply closed his mouth and let his eyes flit aside, feeling very flattered and a bit out of place. Refusing the compliment, or dismissing it would be disrespectful - it came off as falsely humble, when he truly was proud of his skills. Anything else he said would only make it seem like he was preening, or soaking up compliments like some vain thing. "I... thank you." He said, a bit haltingly. So he was quite glad when she answered his own question, changing the topic and pulling her bag aside to show a series of knives. Her next answer made him feel relieved, relieved to know that she was being careful and not simply, naively, walking the roads on her own. Uquin's sister had often rolled her eyes and scorned those who sought books or non-bladed functions, decrying them as idealistic, prone to getting themselves killed because they couldn't understand the truths of the world.

He was glad that Mella didn't meet this stereotype he had been raised with. It was clear through his body language that he was pleased - his shoulders relaxed somewhat, and he gave the slightest of nods of approval, even if his expression itself remained the same stern, perceptive look - gazing at her face a little too closely to be socially comfortable, surely. "That's good." He said, very simply. Then... after just a moment, he blinked his eyes then let a small, somewhat teasing smirk rise onto his lips. "And if the knives fail, I am sure your mon-- ... Telwren would gladly stick them for you, in stead." Perhaps the joke would fall flat, but in his cynical point of view the idea of the creature eviscerating bandits for her was amusing. Perhaps Mella wouldn't take kindly to his sense of humor, though - few appreciated the morbid jokes of a healer.

Uquin seemed a bit ill at ease with her praise so Mella decided not to bring up his skills or gifts further. After all perhaps he had failed to save someone or his instructors where not quite a subject he was comfortable with. The part of her that loved to capture a story to draw was running wild with her imagination and it took some effort to control her questioning mind. Perhaps she should have become a lore collector instead though when it came to telling tales she often found herself frozen in indecision and fear of making a mistake. Uquin did relax as she went on which was nice. His stare was unyielding and make her heart pick up the pace it’s pace as she looked to the side of the path they were walking to hide her blush.

Uquin was a kind healer and gentle soul despite his fierce gaze. Mella scolded herself thinking it was very wrong to develop a crush on someone she hardly knew. Yet perhaps there was a blossom of one forming in her chest. His jest at Telwren made her laugh but she was careful not to look at him. “Well my little monster might not do them any harm if they offer him food.” Her fingers moved to her sash and slide down so they could stroke Telwren’s head through the fabric. There was a small grunt and shifting but no hissing or any sign of displeasure from the sailscale. She liked teasing her little companion but in truth the sailscale kept her company and make her happy even though at times she wondered why such an angry little beast was her best friend. Smiling at her stomach she risked a momentary glance to Uquin. “Umm you know even though this happened Telwren isn’t really violent he was just panicked about falling. Lazy, greedy and always hungry yes, but he’s really a good travel companion and umm.. well I guess I just don’t want you to think he’s mean because he really isn’t. It’s ok to tease him but I wanted to let you know I was only joking a bit when I called him a monster.” She hoped her sentiment go through since it was clear Uquin had little contact with sailscales on a normal basis from their conversation. She wished she had a sailscale like Inu to show Uquin but all she had was her irritated little Telwren.

Ah... had he offended her, by speaking of her 'pet' that way? He should have felt guilty, but her correction was so simple, and lacked any real heat so he decided not to worry himself about it too much. Instead his mouth opened into a slight 'o', then he nodded, hand raising to rub the back of his neck. The motion would have appeared sheepish in any other sense, but now it was done with the same emotion as a shrug - more of an 'ah, well' gesture if there ever was one.

She seemed distracted, though, for whatever reason, so Uquin simply continued to walk, one hand clasped around the tie of the bags that had been discarded from the wagon, before, turning to watch the road instead of staring at her as eerily closely as he had before - he must be unnerving her, he realized.

He really should be trying to avoid irking her - but there was one small thing boggling around in his mind. "I know that creatures are... useful, and able to assuage some loneliness but..." He tilted his head, pursing his lips in thought and finally dropping his eyes to the wriggling lump in the front of Mella's tunic, "Connection or not, they are wild animals - dangerous in their own way. Not to say he intends you harm or is nefarious in any way, but... I ...just urge you to be careful." .. Not that it was his place to urge her of anything.

He blamed it on his profession, making him concerned for Mella's wellbeing. The sudden image in his mind of the creature growing hungry in the middle of the night and reopening her belly more purposefully made him stare, harder, at that lump as if it truly had performed such an offensive thing on purpose, regardless of his words.

Taking the time to ponder over Uquin’s words she had to admit they did make a good amount of sense. “True though as we both have seen people can be as bad as any wild beast. Some are timid, some flee, and some fight for reasons we don’t understand.” Uquin seemed disturbed by all this though and Mella felt some sense of guilt about the matter. “S-Still I.. I’ll be careful I promise.” Her hand went protectively over Telwren’s bulk hidden by her sash. How could she not wish to guard what was her closest friend and often only traveling companion. Those like Uquin didn’t just fall out of the trees after all.

Trying to defuse the situation she gave him a smile. “You know Uquin if you glare any harder my sash will catch on fire and you’ll have more than just a scratch to have to treat, and as sweet as you are I’d rather not have your hands all over me in that manner.” She of course meant it in a friendly joking manner, but a small part of her brain caught up after she said it and she realized how it could be taken in another context and blushed. She tugged at her sash self consciously and accidentally woke up Telwren.

The sail scale let out an irritated chirp and poked his head out to glare at the food giver. Again? Really she would never let him rest. Snorting he shimmed up the sash awkwardly balanced out by the food giver. Sniffing around he noticed the food bag was carried by the stranger food giver. Lazily he stretched out a claw and opened it and closed it slowly pawing the air in the direction of the sack. It was a very pathetic motion but it often got him a treat from the food giver and was worth it even if it made his food giver burst out in peals of high pitched noises and petting. The stranger food giver seemed tense and displeased but Telwren chirped again and repeated the pawing motion.

As Mella began to ponder aloud about the nature of beast versus man, Uquin watched the shape in her sash, frowning, only looking up at her by moving his eyes, while his head remained tilted down. However, as soon as she did agree to at least consider his warning, the healer nodded and averted his eyes, instead peering ahead down the road once more. Only to stop and double take when Mella continued. "I -- assure you I ... if that were the case I would act professionally -- t-though I don't blame you for wanting to avoid a burn -- my eyes don't burst items into flames though, so... so!" He found himself blabbering, feeling the tips of his ears heat up, along with his cheeks. Leave it to him to socially ruin a joke by taking it literally for a split second.

Not that she had said anything too horribly strange, but being caught in the previous intense stare at her cloak, and being called on it made him feel a childish sense of sheepishness, and he grunted softly, his hand raising to rub the short hair at the back of his neck, below the raised ponytail.

That and the sudden shuffling in her sash from the mussed creature, who extended its head out into the air once more, fixing Uquin with a reptilian stare. Uquin soon found he couldn't look away from the beast, though it was more a suspicious response, feeling if he looked away Telwren would leap at him like some flying snake. Only-- what came next was a weird motion with its claw.

He blinked. Then looked, briefly, up at Mella, his eyebrows furrowing, before ducking his eyes back down at the repeated motion. He wrinkled his nose, not in disgust but in puzzlement. " What in the spirits does it want?" He wondered aloud, shifting to cross his arms over his chest, lips falling into a somewhat perturbed frown.

When Uquin was so flustered and stammering for a response Mella instantaneously felt more at ease. It was nice to know she wasn’t the only one who got flustered from time to time. She was still blushing, bthough now there was a comfortable smile on her face. Uquin was pretty cute. She was also relieved to hear his words. “Yes.” Her hair bounced as she gave a nod to him while holding her sash steady for the perched sail scale. “I know Uquin. I trust you; you’re as nice as you are cute so I know you’d never take advantage of anyone.” Perhaps that wasn’t the most tactful way to phrase it but it was the first thing that popped to mind and it was completely true, to Mella at least.

Uquinwas fun to watch and Mella made note of the different expressions he had so she could do some sketches latter. It was always easier for her to draw friends and she counted Uquin as such, well perhaps a bit more since she had something of a crush on him though she doubted it would go anywhere. Still all of his faces were adorable from embarrassed, cagey, and even mystified. Giggling she changed the hand she held her sash with to the one the arm Telwren was more or less perching on. With her now free hand she reached up and rubbed the base of the lizard’s skull drawing a lazy hiss of pleasure from him. “Well you do have the bags, which does have Telwren’s favorite thing in it. Food.” Batting her eyes innocently at Uquin she continued making it sound naive though she knew Telwren was just spoiled by her. “I did say he was a bit of a glutton in other words before. He has learned to do that when he is hungry, which is often though he never eats too much at one time. You should have seen him when I first got him. He used to gorge himself on food until he looked more like a ball and couldn’t even fly. Now that he stays with me he seems to know he can have food at most any time so he eats small bits throughout the day. I have to admit sometimes I’m not sure how he stays light enough to be carried in my sash, though he does exercise in the evenings.” That was a mild way to put Telwren’s bizarre behavior in perspective. Near dusk he would become highly active and chase away bugs and anything that moved that wasn’t Mella. She didn’t know if it was to protect his food, or his sleeping space but Mella was just glad she didn’t have to worry too much about bugs with Telwren around at night. She was tempted to tell Uquin how silly Telwren was all paranoid at night but thought better of it given his interactions with Telwren so far.

Infuriating! The stupid stranger food giver didn’t seem to understand. Cocking his head to look at his food giver chirped before looking back to the bags. It was clear what he wanted and he even made the motion. Telwren did not want to have to train another food giver. His was bad enough as it was and had taken too long to train to his wishes, he hated the idea of trying to train another. Glaring up at the currently non-food giving stranger he chirped irritatedly and repeated the grasping motion willing the dense creature to understand his desires. Food. Give me food.

At least she wasn't laughing. When Uquin was startled from his normally quiet and retrospective mood, he always felt... out of his depth. Already humiliated, feeling a flush down the back of his neck to the tips of his ears, Uquin expected to be teased for his response, so when instead she nodded and assured him that she agreed, he relaxed - only to blink as she continued. 'Cute'? Him? That was... unexpected, and so he fixed her with a confuse expression, only to have his focus stolen by her whining companion. He was a man obsessed with his profession, and while aging past adolescence and into young adulthood should have turned his mind to romance, it hadn't had much of an effect on him.

Not to disappoint her, of course. Call him oblivious, and beyond that the befuddling response from her was quickly pushed away in lieu of the next distraction to come his way. And, in that case, it was Telwren, and Mella's explanation of the sailscale's odd motions. As she spoke, Uquin snorted in quiet amusement, slowly regaining his composure, the ruddy color of his face smoothing back to a normal complexion, soon enough.

But surely she was joking? The thing badgered her for food? Of course it did. At first, Uquin felt he would be able to ignore the thing, but another few steps and its claw raised again, motioning at him impatiently, staring at him in a way that made Uquin feel certain that he was being judged, and probably insulted, by the creature infront of him. Then Telwren chirped, a cranky sound. How long before the taloned sailscale lost its patience, and its good behavior? Had Mella ever denied it food, and seen what it would do? Distrustful as he was though, Uquin sighed gruffly then shifted his own bag, rather than Mella's, not wanting to waste more supplies of hers than he should, seeing as she had farther to go than he did. He only had to get home, a few days' walk at most, whereas she had ... who knows how far to travel, assuming she didn't settle in Yera for a short time before moving on.

After a bit of shuffling, he retrieved a stick of aldabuck jerky, hesitating obviously, definitely not liking the idea of giving up valuable meat to the annoying creature, but he finally extended his hand, holding only the tip of the meat and waiting for the hungry reptile to snatch it away, ready to count his fingers when finished.

"Mmf. In Yera, remind me to get extra supplies for you - so this thing doesn't devour your stock and leave you hungry halfway to home." He sighed, then pulled his hand back and gave Mella a look, gaze lingering for a moment before turning away, his cheeks tinging again, this time for a reason he didn't care to dwell upon. Instead the image made him look flushed, but also horribly grumpy, almost like a child who felt wronged by handing over his jerky to the tempermental creature infront of him. "At least... you have a companion for your trips." He finally conceded, though that only made him appear even grumpier, if that were possible.
