"Ah, good," said Alistaire. "Keeley it is."

He dragged the chains around and threw them back up just in time to catch the full brunt of Oliver's panicked swing, a screech of metal against metal as the chains dragged along the blade of the axe. It sent Alistaire skidding backwards several steps, and he let out a hiss of irritation. The chains twisted and he spun, slashing one dagger at Oliver's right side and then the next at his left in quick succession, teeth clenched together as Alistaire leapt backwards.

"He was an idiot," he said flatly. "It's nothing to be surprised about."

The moment of success Oliver felt was very quickly overshadowed by panic as Alistaire not only caught his attack, but retaliated in quick succession. The kid couldn't bring his axe back fast enough to block either attack. But even though he flinched back quite dramatically, he didn't yelp or cry out. Though there was a hint of tears starting to form at the corner of his eyes, it was purely a pain reflex, and he didn't look like someone who was afraid to the point of giving up.

"H-he's not!" Oliver tried to protest, but how did someone explain that reckless side of emotion to one with such cold eyes? Maybe Ian had done something stupid, but he seemed so lost, and when you were lost it was hard not to take whatever punishment you could find.

He took a step back, the axe tip lowered for a sharp jab, but for a second there was only a hiss of steam and a mechanical clicking... And then a blast of icy energy shot out with enough force to knock Oliver back a few steps. This time he had braced himself to not fall over, he had learned his lesson the first time!

Behind Alistaire another dummy was also blasted by the attack, and a slight scar was left in the dirt where the deflected beam hit ground.

The momentary satisfaction Alistaire had felt on using Grimshaw's special attack rapidly depleted the moment Oliver's axe swung towards him, a blast of icy air colliding with his chest and sending him careening backwards with a gasp. He hadn't fallen, but he stood straighter now, a terrible look of anger and humiliation in Alistaire's eyes now. He stalked towards the boy and his gloved fingers curled in the front of his shirt before one of the daggers was directed towards Oliver's arm.

"I beg to differ," Alistaire said coldly. "You are not his brother. Don't pretend to know him as well as I do."

Oliver tried to raise the axe to block the attack, but the daggers were swift, and he felt a stab of pain from his upper arm. He raised the axe as if to make another swing, but he was worn down now, and with one arm injured he couldn't lift it... The weapon dropped back down, the blade resting lightly on the ground.

"You don't have to be his brother to know him!" Oliver said, mustering a surprising amount of conviction as he attempted to raise the axe once again.

Alistaire dragged the chains around, twisting the daggers and swiping the both of them towards Oliver's legs this time, Alistaire bent lower to angle himself more easily.

"I beg to differ," he said flatly. "I know Ian better than anyone else here."

Oliver leapt back to avoid the daggers, but stumbled before he could recover his balance. He landed on his back and pushed himself away from Alistaire.

"He's not an idiot!" The kid blurted out again. He scrambled back a little farther, but if he tried to get up he would leave his head unprotected, or expose his back. And he most certainly didn't want to die with a knife in his back.

Alistaire moved towards Oliver and bent down, crouching beside Oliver.

"He's an idiot who wears his heart on his sleeve," he said flatly, and the chains clinked as he dragged them along the grass. "And so are you. When will people like you ever learn?"

He flipped the blade and drove it into Oliver's calf.

"Emotions serve no purpose."

This time Oliver did cry out, and tears sprang to his eyes. He was afraid to pull his leg back and risk more damage, but like this he was little more than a pinned insect.

He closed his eyes tight and shook his head, disagreeing with that very premise. The kid looked as though he was holding something back, desperately torn between being good in an attempt to escape, and defiantly speaking his mind.

Alistaire frowned slightly, his expression dark. He reached for his dagger and wrenched it free from Oliver's leg, the FEAR shield preventing any lasting damage. He turned the weapon over in his hand and stood back up, taking a few steps away from Oliver.

"Go," he said flatly. "You're not worth my time."

Oliver choked back a whimper as the dagger was roughly pulled out. He wanted to argue, and say emotions were not a weakness. He wanted to say that the pain they undoubtedly caused was part of what makes a person stronger. Sometimes it was a fight in itself.

But the kid was in pain, and his face was slowly becoming pale, just the shock of incurring such an injury was catching up to him. Jökul would fix it, the wound was already beginning to heal, but it was a cruel reminder of how dangerous his new life would be.

All attempts at bravery forgotten, Oliver scrambled to his feet and ran as fast as his leg would allow.
