Elke came down the stairs, dressed in yesterdays clothes and feeling kind of grungy, but at least her hair was clean. Finn ran hot at night. “You ready to go,” she asked Finn, leaning on the counter.
“You ought to bring some clothes over, darling. Although if all your things fit like that, maybe we ought to go shopping first,” said Aysel, and Elke tried not to shiver.
“If we’re meeting your mom and sister at noon,” Elke said, “we’d really better go. Thank you for breakfast, Maman.”

“Yeah,” said Finn, getting up from the counter. Whatever tension he momentarily felt pass between Elke and her mother, he chose to ignore as none of his business. Instead, he nodded resignedly. “Thank you for breakfast,” he agreed, and hesitated because he wasn’t sure what to call Elke’s mother. Madame Arma? Mrs. Arma? “And for letting me stay over.”
It had been a difficult few hours, and it was still sinking in - it was going to get worse. Finn rounded up the last of his belongings and followed Elke out to his jeep. “I can drive,” he offered. “Thanks. For everything.”
