The supply portal opened not long after, days early, and Jane stepped through.

Lawrence had looked up at the pillar or light and wondered if it was Taym who was dead or the horsemen and realized it made no difference to him which it was. More years would have been most enjoyable, but being free of the debt he supposedly owed would also have been convenient. Now he also knew that it was possible to gain from the fear creatures and he might well be useful to them in future.
All that ever really mattered was the highest bidder.
When Jane arrived he simply gave her the usual indifferent stare that he gave everything. He did not greet her, his attention as far as he was concerned was formality enough. The false Taym sat on one of the cots smoking a cigarette - a task which had been surprisingly tough to teach him, particularly with only one hand for point of reference.
"Come to soak up some sun?" he asked, though it was devoid of mirth.

"Do you know what happened out there?" Jane asked curiously, nodding toward the desert where the lightshow had occurred.

"Unfortunately no." Lawrence said. "I was not privy to whatever was going on out there. It is rather segregated at this camp."
He didn't expect her to inform him.

"You're a shallow fit for this division," Jane observed, voice kind. "It was the destruction of a troublesome lair. Your own work here, while appreciated, is no longer neccessary. You have ten minutes to prepare before returning to the island." During the entirety of this, she ignored the Taym that sat quietly smoking.

Lawrence nodded and gave no outward indication of his curiosity as far as Tayms fate went. "Oh good. I was getting low on sunscreen anyway." He too said nothing of his little pet.

She smiled and nodded in good natured appreciation at the joke and waited for him to collect his belongings.

Lawr had packed lightly, you didn't need much to go to what might be your death and he was an extremely neat person regardless. When he had his possessions he returned.
"Ready to leave." He said cheerfully.

"Very efficient, Jan," she nodded in approval. "I'll send someone to collect Thompson's later." Finally she approached the copy and lifted his wrist, snapping a bracelet around it. "As well as this," Jane's smile brightened. "You did well to procure it for us."

"You are most welcome." He said. People could think whatever they wanted. If the moth woman returned he would still be alive to barter further.
"Thank you for the opportunity. " As if it had been the plan all along.

"You'll find a new coat waiting in your primary room. Congratulations." She gave him a you first gesture toward the portal. "And Jan? Should a member of Famine contact you again, inform us. You have a history of catatonia, so perhaps you won't mind the possibility of being locked in a pod, awake and motionless, for years or even decades. Nonetheless, that will be your fate." Jane smiled and nodded in a reassuring manner. "It's important to be clear on these matters."

A promotion was a most welcome result from this little vacation, he thought to himself, it had not been as difficult as so many people made it out to be.
He did however note the comment on his catatonia and the acknowledgment that he inhabited more than one room. He had never mentioned his medical history to anyone, in fact off island it had been something he had left behind when he left his old life behind. It spoke of Deus' detective abilities and was a distinct threat.
He held his hands up briefly in a gesture which said in no words at all "Alright alright you got me." It was an acknowledgment that Deus' abilities to track him were frequently surprising and that perhaps it was in his best interests - for the time being - to keep them in the loop. But it was ambiguous enough that it could also have been a dismissal.
"Noted." he said. "I also enjoy a bit of clarity."
And giving her that smile that didn't quite work out when the rest of his features refused to smile back, he headed off into the portal, a younger, more tanned man than when he arrived.
