"Kinfa? You have to catch them when they're small, I hear, otherwise they don't let you ride them..." he said thoughtfully, glancing at her for a moment, "Oh, don't w-worry about the tea. I, uh, just like it hot." he said reassuringly, sitting down on the floor with his tea.

"Well... yes. Magic is a skill, but its also..." he looked down at his hand sadly, an ehtereal flame flickering in it at a thought, "... Well, mine is me. In a way." he dissipated it into the air and took another drink of tea. "Its destructive, impulsive, and passionate. I'm not it and, at the same time, I-I am."

He tried to give her a reassuring smile. "Its a bit complicated, that's all." he said, twisting his cup around in his hands, "With magic, if you want to control it you have to, uh... agree." yes. That was the right word. "You have to agree with it, I guess." He gave her a healer's look over, frowning. "Are you all right?" He'd thought he'd attended to most of her injuries, but what if new ones - physical or subcutaneous or whatever - had come to fruition while she had been sitting there? "Should I get you something else?" he asked, starting to stand up again, "Are you in pain?"

Sawenah looked up from her knees and smiled warmly, “No, I’m fine thanks… Not hurt either; my feet feel almost tingly from whatever you put on them. It’s a neat feeling. ” she stared at the steam rising out of her tea cup and let its vapor envelop her face, “Magic sounds… like it’s a scary thing.” She had remembered seeing a girl in her village. She was a warm, uplifting kind of child who discovered she had magical abilities... but the child did not change because of the magic, she was as whimsical and energetic as ever. Was it the magic that made her such, or her? Perhaps that is what Biroki meant by agreeing with the magic; they were harmonious. The curiosity swirled in her brain as she watched the steam rise from her drink. Blowing gently on the brew she raised it to her lips and tipped it so the fluid trickled between her lips. It was a relief to her that she was not a magic user.

Lifting her head from her chin she let out a slow sigh, "What can you tell me about this place... It seems like it would be dangerous if I wandered too far from the camp, but obviously I can't stay here forever... I'm going to need to leave here sometime, so I had best learn what I can about out there, right?" She could see her logic, but not everyone understood how her mind worked. Biroki seemed like a knowledgeable fellow, and has been very helpful thus far...

"Good." Tingly meant that the stuff was working, which meant that the batch was good quality and would be useful. Which was very good.

"This place? You mean... Jahuar? Or the Tale?" he asked, "We're, uh, kind of on the edge here." He swirled his tea around in his cup, "Both are dangerous, though I'm going to guess that you went across the Tale to get here."

So she must mean Jahuar, you idiot. he remarked to himself, You know, you'r homeland? The place you've never left?

"Well, in Jahuar, most of the danger is on the ground. The trees are safe, and grow close enough together that, with practice, you can travel anywhere by bough and branch." he loved that about his homeland - how it was connected in its highest reaches by the trees. Connectivity was a beautiful concept, one he liked. He wondered how the other lands were connected. "Do you like rain?" he asked, curious, "Where were you from, again?"

“Sauti.” She uttered a bit embarrassed at her admittance, “A good portion of me is from this place, and I know nothing of it.” It was strange thinking about it… Her people, her heritage, her culture came from this region and this is the first time she has ever set foot on this land. Thinking about it saddened her some, but at the same time it was unreal how natural she felt being out in the jungle; her vision adjusted seamlessly to the darkness. She found things were more defined in the darkness the edges were sharp and crisp. It would be nice to explore this place more, but if it is as dangerous as they say, well, she’ll have to brush up on her tree climbing.

“I’m a little scared to explore much, but I want to…” Sawenah added while uncoiling from her ball like posture, “I just should probably become a bit more experienced before I do. I hear the Alkidike people are very protective of their own, and untrusting to outsiders…” Her hands broke out in a sweat as she thought of actually being confronted by one. Their height alone makes them rather intimidating and that’s not even half of it… they have a brutally terrifying reputation among earthlings. And since she’s part one she figured the shifter kind wouldn’t have much heart for her… but she’s part shifter too. She didn’t expect to find much love among either kind; it’s been hard enough trying to be accepted among the Wind, but she still wants to explore the land, view the culture, and maybe meet someone that can tell her something about her origin someday.

"My wife, Zuri..." saying her name stung him like a slap to his face, and he winced, "... was in much the same s-situation. She is half shifter, and she knew nothing about Jahuar when she came here from Zena..." Oh Zuri... Would she forgive him? Did he really deserve the way she was treating him? Did he need forgiving?

"Well, you can start in a settlement, and explore around it bit by bit... That's fairly safe, to start..." it was, after all, how he himself had started, exploring the wilds around Ast, and then further and further, until he knew the jungle and the lakes nearby very well indeed.

"Yeah." he agreed, "The alkidike kind of are..." he looked at her, searching for the various traits that marked her as a hybrid. Alkidike was obvious, but the others were not. She looked like someone had mixed a bucket of ink and then painted it on a person. Poor girl - she had a sort of exotic beauty to her, but she would have trouble, especially if the alkidike lands were where she was going. "... difficult. I'm not saying my tribe isn't, though." he said, hurriedly - he just wanted to be clear. "But my home town of Ast is fairly accepting. Somewhat... Are you..." he hesitated, "Do you know... stars, this was awkward, "Do you know what went into you?"

Stars, that sounds so terrible... he thought, wincing, "... I mean, what you are a mix of?"

Sawenah gave him a blank stare for a good long moment, long after being awkward; then without blinking lowered her head to her tea. She had no idea of her origin, only hunches. She had caught whispers of rumors of the night she was birthed; abandoned at the foot of a statue dedicated to Bergchi with nothing more than blanket and a slip of paper with her name scribbled to it. But never anything as to who left her; whenever she prodded for more they had somewhere else to be…

“I… don’t know… I look alkidike, my skin changes from day to night… And I was abandoned in a wind village… Guess if anything I’m an Alkidike Shifter for certain…” This was so awkward for her, but at the same time she found herself more upset with her lack of knowledge rather than being asked about it. “Which shifter settlement is closest to alkidike territory?” She figured that would be her best bet to get answers… assuming she could get someone to talk.

She could sympathize with Zuri even though she had never met her, “Were you with her? I am sure she was grateful to have you along.” Coming from one side of Tendaji to the other was something she could relate to, however, she had wished this venture could have waited until she was more prepared… Nothing like jumping in the deep end right? Sink or swim she had to make do with what she could scavenge or what she would be given…

Stars and moon I've done it this time Biroki thought, flinching at the awkwardness of the silence between them, I've stuck my foot completely in my mouth... 'What went into you?!' Who would ever want to respond to that?!

He swallowed, focusing on his tea, trying not to be the same shrinking coward of a man as he had been as a teenager. How was he supposed to deal with this then, if not to cower? “Uhm...” he began, trying to break the silence. He would have said more, but – to the Sage's great relief – she spoke up on her own.

He listened to her thoughtfully. He'd seen Alkidike/Shifters, and she looked very different from them. Not that every hybrid wasn't different or unique, but it was clear that there was more than just Alkidike and Shifter blood in her. Not knowing exactly what, though, Biroki said nothing and nodded.

”Ast.” he answered, ”Where I grew up. The Alkidikes live to the North and West of it, but sometimes you can see them in the surrounding j-jungle.”

Oh moons. She wanted to talk about Zuri. He bit his lip, trying to keep back the eruption of feelings that threatened to cloud his mind like silt at the bottom of a river. “... No. I wasn't with her when she came from Zena... I met her after, when she'd settled in with her mother's family.” he hesitated, ”I'm not sure if she came across alone...” he hadn't really thought about it, but what if she had? If she had, then she was far stronger than he had thought. ”But I would believe it of her.”

“Hmm.” She pondered it a moment, ‘So Ast is the closest shifter settlement to the alkidikes… Maybe I can get some understanding of where I came from… Maybe someone will recognize me? Or something of me…’ It all seemed so hopeless, but if she didn’t try she would never know.

“How far away is Ast? Could you get me directions or a map or…” her eyes drifted the room trying to think of what would be useful on this venture. She probably wouldn’t leave until the camp disbanded; she had things too good here, why leave? But when it was time she would definitely seek out this Ast.

”Better. I can take you there... Un-unless you're in a hurry. Then I can find someone already going there...” he thought of a few people he knew who would be leaving soon. ”I can have them take you along...” he thought for a moment, estimating. ”About a half days travel...” he replied, ”At a good pace, on the main paths, with a good group...” He smiled, ”Ast is... North of here.” he explained, ”And it's a sort of... central... place.”

Sawenah smiled and wiggled her feet to the sage, "Best let my feet rest... we could travel when they're healed though. It will be nice to get out and see Jauhar." she untangled her legs from one another being sure to take extra care around her feet and worked her way to balancing on her heels, "Suppose I should lay down for a bit... Won't be long before I'm called for another trek to find supplies."

Flopping over on an empty bed she began wriggling her way under the covers and took the pillow from her head and used it to prop up her feet. She gave Biroki one last soft smile and said, "Thanks again for all your help Biroki." With that she curled up in the covers and tried to get some well earned sleep.

Yes

”Yes.” he nodded, ”Let your feet rest, first...” he said, watching as she snuggled into her well-earned rest. ”You're very welcome.” he said, instinctively fixing the cover as he would for his daughters, ”If you need anything before you go on your next trek... just g-give me a shout, all right?” he said, before leaving her to her rest.
