This was an informative lesson for the Life trainee. Despite their drastically different damage styles, there was one thing his axe had in common with the dog weight. Momentum seemed to be the key to-

OOOF. Oliver wasn't able to dodge that one at all, that very same momentum that made his slash so effective was hard to halt, and before he knew it the weapon was behind him in relation to his opponent. The kid once again got knocked right over.

He scrambled back to his feet, but he misjudged the distance between Shiloh and himself, and the swing was too far away.

He had to give the trainee points for trying, he hit hard and was hit hard in return but it didn’t seem to deter him. As he swung again, Shiloh almost found it hard to picture him as the nervous kid he’d just met only just before but then the axe went wide, slicing through the air beside Shiloh in quite a spectacular miss and the image came rushing back.

Still, he was trying and, no matter how much he protested, Oliver kept getting back on his feet. Shiloh found him scrappy, resilient – he liked him already. In earnest, he spun back at Oliver with his weapon, Haruko’s chain whistling through the air.

The last thing Oliver would give himself credit for was scrappiness and resiliency. Another heavy blow sent him staggering, but he only dropped to one knee this time. Each jarring hit seemed to rattle him all the way down to his bones. He wanted to cry from the pain, and frustration, and the sheer hopelessness he felt knowing this was his life now.

But Jökul felt cool under his hands, reminding him that hiding away and merely thinking about how terrible things were wouldn't help him. Right now it would only distract him, maybe even get him killed. Shiloh had said it wouldn't happen, that they wouldn't get too hurt, but that wouldn't always be the case...

He managed to get that knee back off the dirt. At first it looked like the step and swing was once again way off, but it was the momentum he was after. Another step, and an extra half rotation, and the axe had the speed it needed to bite deep.

Shiloh had long since gotten used to this ‘way of life’, and after fighting for his life, spars like this were not only a welcome reprieve but a necessity. Being in anything less than tip-top shape was a recipe for disaster on the island, and even then, safety was far from guaranteed. But giving up was not a concept Shiloh had really ever understood, even if the axe slicing through the air made his nerves stand on end. It connected this time, solidly, and he gritted his teeth against the slash, pushed back several feet by Oliver’s momentum.

“That’s it,” he called out, giving in to the pain only long enough for a wince and then he was back on his feet, once again whipping Haruko’s metallic jaws around

Oliver was caught off guard by the next blow. It hadn't been a fluke the first time, he had actually felt it, hitting someone else. The free swing followed by that amount of resistance, he had watched enough horror movies to know an attack like that would have sliced a regular man wide open.

A rumbling laugh came after he was sent sprawling once again, deep like the crack of heavy ice sliding against itself.

Be that as it may, Oliver could not get close enough for another swing. The axe was phenomenal, but couldn't Jökul be a weapon that didn't need to get so close within range of the opponent's weapon? The glacial voice laughed again.

The axe flew wide of Shiloh, and he was glad, fear shield or not, it was an impressive weapon and quite honestly terrifying. But instead of volleying back another blow, he pulled up, raising a hand to Oliver.

“Let’s take a time-out,” he said cheerfully, resting Haruko’s jaws against the ground. “How’re you feeling?”

Hunters were terrifying people. The moment Shiloh called a halt to the match, Oliver felt the deep aches from the heavy blows, and the trembling weakness of muscles pushed to exercise far too much so suddenly. He took a deep breath, the axe head slowly falling to the ground.

"Um..." Oliver felt shaky all over. He was not used to this sort of exercise, and as the adrenaline wore off he started to realize exactly how hard it would be to adapt to this new life. Before he could compose himself, his eyes grew shiny, and his lower lip quivered.

Shiloh had expected him to be out of breath, probably sore and maybe a little uneasy about the whole thing but he had never expected the quivering lip, or the glistening eyes that threatened to spill over with tears.

“Oh, oh, oh no, no, no,” he scrambled, “Hey, it’s okay! It was just a spar and all, and you know I’ve been practicing a lot lately so I might have gone a bit overboard, after all, I’m a rank above you so it’s not like you know… It’ll be fine, okay! You’ll be alright!”

He patted his back, slinging his arm over his shoulder.

“It just takes some getting used to is all. I used to get my butt kicked all the time, I still do, in spars I mean. But you know, those people who kick your butt in practice, we’re the ones looking out for you in the field, right, so you don’t have to worry about being on that level just yet.”

He smiled at him widely, doing his best to try and cheer him up.

“I swear, you’ll get the hang of it. I’m out here most mornings, or after shifts, you can come practice with me if you like!”

Oliver sniffled loudly, rubbing his face with one arm as Shiloh attempted to comfort him. Surprisingly he didn't hurt too badly, considering the beating he had been given, and it wasn't the pain that had him teary-eyed. Each reassurance send guilty little needles through the boy's heart.

"B-but... what i-if I'm useless... forever?" Oliver said between little sobs and hiccups he was trying his hardest to hold back. He didn't want to have someone else watching his back, there was no reason to keep him alive in the first place. The more he learned about the creatures the hunters faced every day, the more convinced he was that there was no room on the island for his incompetence, and felt the shame inside him grow.

"I-I d-don't..." He didn't finish the sentence, struggling to keep the tears from getting the upper hand.

Shiloh paled; this wasn’t the way he wanted his cheering up to go at all.

“You aren’t useless now, Oliver, let alone forever! Heck, you got a couple of really good hits in there on me, you’ll be a real powerhouse if you keep at it. And in battle you know, it’s like I said, we’re working as a team. So no one has to be perfect all the time, all you have to do is try your best, and if your best is only a hit or two, it’s still something! Every little bit of help is so, so important in battle, you know, one person can be the difference between winning and losing.”

He tried to smile again, patting Oliver’s back.

“You don’t have to be great, you just have to be you, okay? And if you want to get stronger, it’s totally possible, it just takes a little time a practice, is all.”

Oliver was afraid of that little hopeful spark. He wanted to squelch it, put it out so he wouldn't feel hurt when it was suddenly dashed. But what Shiloh said made sense, it was the kind of logic you could only argue with when you felt so bad you would argue anything to justify feeling bad.

The Life trainee rubbed his eyes again, but the mood around him felt a little calmer. He couldn't quite bring himself to look up at Shiloh though, and his bangs hid part of his face as he kept his head down, looking at the skeletal-looking axe in his hands. "I-I'm n-not very strong, b-but Jökul is really amazing..."

Oliver often wondered why such a large and powerful weapon had chosen him, out of all the potential hunters out there, but Jökul remained silent and provided him with no enlightenment on the matter.

Shiloh didn’t push much more, suddenly aware that his bright and bubbly overbearingness might have been a bit much for Oliver. He had no intentions of dialing it down completely, because it was clear that Oliver needed something bright around him, something to maybe pull him along, to remind him that things weren’t always that bad. On Deus, mind you, they usually were, but he hadn’t the heart to let him in yet. He wondered vaguely if that was setting him up for failure, to not warn him of everything but when he looked at Oliver’s rounded little shoulders, he couldn’t help but want to keep him safe from it all for just a little bit more, or at the very least, break it to him in the gentlest way possible.

Then too, Shiloh thought, it wasn’t like him to have given up hope so easily. It was true that the island had brought him a lot of hardships and he found it harder and harder to find any good in it, but that didn’t mean that good things hadn’t happened and given the circumstances, there were worse places to be.

“Jökul is awesome,” he agreed. “And you know, he’s your partner so you’re allowed to lean on him a little bit. I mean, you work together but that doesn’t mean he won’t do his best to keep you safe. After all, he needs you too, you know.”

Oliver never really had a partner before. Not when it came to things like this, someone who was always right there in his mind even if he was hurt and terrified. The boy didn't even know what having a real friend was like. He had faked his way through self-sufficience long enough that he didn't know how to lean on anyone at all. It had been easy for a smart child like him, but on this island he was in way over his head.

Jökul?

There was silence. And then a faint rumble. It was like the weapon was saying yes I am still here, humouring Oliver's tentative reaching-out gesture.

For a second looked like Oliver was about to cry all over again, but the sniffling noises sounded more relieved than distressed. "H-he's really great," the trainee repeated with a watery smile.

“Yeah, that’s the spirit,” Shiloh said, beaming at Oliver. His hand whacked his shoulder again, in a show of kinship or happiness or whatever happened to be running through Shiloh’s head to make him think that an enthusiastic shoulder walloping was what Oliver really needed.

“See, it’s not so bad! Not even an a trip to the infirmary.”

He grinned, de-summoning Haruko.

“Say, you’re friends with Ian right? We should all catch a bite sometime, we can talk about sparring! Well, and other stuff, of course, I’m sure there’s plenty of things… Anyway, I try to get out here at least three times a week, so if you ever want to join me, you can always text me.”

Perhaps the good wallop was what Oliver needed, he wiped his eyes, rubbed his nose on the sleeve of his jacket, and nodded. Jökul vanished, and the kid occupied his nervous hands by holding the tooth now back around his neck.

"I-I would like that..." Oliver replied in a super timid voice. Getting an invitation from an older hunter was like starting out in a MMORPG and having a high levelled player offer to show you the ropes. Except online he wouldn't have been nearly so bashful. No, it was more like getting invited to sit at the cool kids table.
