When school's out. The sound of his voice echoed in her head after he'd gone -- she didn't try to stop him -- and she stared after his retreating back, thunderstruck.

When school's out.

God, he was just a highschool kid. Hvergelmir had been able to tell he wasn't exactly a proud father of three with a fourth on the way or anything, but to have it confirmed like that, that the Negaverse was taking high schoolers and putting weapons in their hands and sending them off with a -- a quota of people to kill --

She held her head between her hands for a few moments, trying to shut out the horror of that from all swamping in at once. It wasn't right. It wasn't fair. He probably had to get home and do his homework before his curfew, for God's sake.

Hvergelmir should've gone home feeling elated. She'd had some measure of success with a Negaverse officer, and she'd managed, for the first time, to travel to the Surrounding on her own and back, and now Zippeite was going to meet her again so she could take him to see the stars, and all that was good, wasn't it? It was good?

Instead she went home miserable, and stayed that way for the rest of the night -- with the words when school's out echoing over and over in her head, following her even into sleep.
