Mimsy sounded like she was all aboard the Vegas train, and Robert hadn't even tried to coax her into it. This was only one of a million reasons why he knew she was absolutely perfect, and he bounced on the bed in excitement. "Oh, Mimsy, I'm so happy you like the idea, because I'm really set on it now and I'm really excited and I kind of wish we could leave right this minute.

"Well, like, the partially naked dancing is mostly done because the women are all very beautiful and have a lot of jiggly bits that look sexy when they dance, so they wear skimpy stuff or nothing at all and lots of people just like that kind of - not that I like that kind of - I mean it's kind of pretty but not because they're naked just - anyway we don't need to see those, there are other shows, like singing and celebrity impersonations and ELVIS!" His hands flew up, slamming into the back of the bed by mistake in his excitement. He didn't seem to mind.

He sat up on the bed immediately after screaming Elvis, and threw his arms up in the air again. "CONGRATULATIONS! Everybody says congratulations after you get married in Vegas! CONGRATULATIONS!"

He really wished he had something to pick up and throw into the air. He bent in and let her squish his face between her hands, smiling a goofy, enchanted smile at her.

There was something heart stopping about the way she told him she loved him, when it happened. Something about the way he unflinchingly believed her, now, even after all their struggle. He melted helplessly, turning to jelly in her arms.

"Nobody will ever understand just how good you make me feel, baby."

The concept of dancing in that way still made no sense to Mimsy, unless it was some sort of bizarre public orgy that was restricted to purely visual enjoyment. With a short 'uh-huh' of agreement, she just nodded and moved along. He was right to know that she was disinterested in that.

"May we announce it everywhere this time? Tell everyone?" She idly played with the end of one of her braids, and looked up at him over the frames of her glasses, now very askew. "I attempted subtlety last time, but I have since discovered that subtlety is not very satisfying. It appears that I am more interested in bells and confetti and congratulations!"

Talk of subtlety tinted what he told her, and her smile turned so proud that it was almost wicked. Another thing that no one could have, except for her. Absolutely tickled by the thought, she giggled wildly, snorted when she tried to breathe, then kept right on giggling.

"Mhmm. No one ever." Her words were spoken in singsong, still framed with laughter, in the way that children teased one another on the playground. She leaned up to kiss him, and pulled him closer by the hem of his shirt. "But that is all right. We understand each other, and we know. I really like sharing this between the two of us. Don't you?"

As she grinned conspiratorially against his lips, she released his shirt and let it fall over her arm. Her fingertips crawled upward until she could press her hand flat against his chest, where she reveled in the feeling of his pulse beneath it.

Even if she didn't need it in the same way, per se, she would never tire of this; it was always so nice to feel a heartbeat and know that it was hers.

"Well, yeah." Still goofy with love, he let out little, low pitched giggles that came out louder when he heard her snort. She was such a little nerd. His beautiful, perfect little nerd. His past self would have been horrified at how smitten he was by her, at this moment. But his past self was an a*****e.

"You can tell anyone and everyone, anytime and anyplace you want. I will too." He was effortlessly proud that she wanted to proclaim her marriage as much as he did. He couldn't help but keep grinning, even when she leaned up to press her lips against his, and he fought to purse them enough to press back. It was difficult, near impossible really, to wipe the smile off his face.

He felt like he was drunk. Not even tipsy, just full out drunk on joy.

"We know." He repeated, his slurring voice still heavy with intensity. "Just you, and me." He bent down and stole another kiss, and another, and .. sucked in his breath to stop himself, because her lips were too tempting. "I love it. I love you. I love us. God, I love us."

They were utterly, and emphatically, ridiculous - in an almost otherworldy fashion. They were Wonderland, wrapped up in a tiny bubble surrounding the two of them, and keeping the rest of the world right out. He'd never had Wonderland before her. But now, he would never be without it again.

She pressed her hand against his chest, where his heart beat strong and fierce and painfully, all for her. But this time, his hand reached up, pressing gently against her chest to feel her heartbeat against his touch. His hand looked so comically large resting there, but he felt it, fluttering with its own personal hesitance, mingling with his own pulse throbbing underneath his fingertips.

Mine, his warm touch said.

At the instant he granted permission to tell everyone, Mimsy wanted to. They were still in the middle of something, a conversation or a moment together, and she had no real intention of leaving, but the urge was strong. Nothing could match the caliber of the bells - excepting the bells themselves - but she absolutely intended to attempt to attain something similar. Everyone had to know. They would all congratulate them for what they achieved together, and would all know that she was capable of this. She could be loved just fine, like everyone else.

Better than everyone else.

With each utterance of 'love', she pressed harder; never enough to be painful, only enough to feel his heartbeat, eyelids fluttering as she felt it grow stronger each time. Maybe she could feel it too, if he kept saying it. Maybe if she pushed with just a bit more force. Maybe if she breached his shield...

Then he stopped saying that word, and moved to put his hand on her chest too, just above the place where her heart should be.

That was atypical.

Her eyes moved from his face and followed his arm, from his shoulder to his hand, her chin nearly tucked against her chest as she stared. Slowly, she moved to curl inward as best she could, as if she would be able to somehow preserve this by containing the moment itself. A perfect specimen of something that she did not yet understand.

"What does it feel like?" she asked, voice trembling. The fingers against his chest weakly curled, but she managed to keep her hand there, despite how frail she felt in this uncertainty.

He felt her heart faintly skip when she asked that. He grinned, ducking his head to rest against hers, and his voice was a quiet whisper to protect the sanctity of the moment. "It feels perfect." His words breathed against her skin. "Soft, and fluttery, and best of all, reacts to me." He bent in, and brushed a kiss against her lips. His fingers shifted, brushing the edge of her collarbone and carefully sliding down under the neckline of her dress until he could feel the chest bare against his skin. Then he stilled again, and concentrated until he could feel her heartbeat once more.

"And.. fast." His eyebrows furrowed. "Your heartbeat is very fast. Are you getting enough exercise?"

Work was getting in the way of his romantic moment.

He pulled his hand away, and his entire body moved down, until he could press his ear against her heart. Here, it was easy to hear the soft flutterings of her rapid heartbeats, and he closed his eyes to lose himself in the sound.

Whatever it was that he felt, it registered as 'perfect', which Mimsy found difficult to believe. Maybe his definition for perfect in this instance was the same as her definition as 'good enough' or 'unremarkably existent'. Maybe his standard of perfection was lower than hers. It made very little difference, ultimately - there would be doubt in herself, not him, no matter what he answered.

But if it was so perfect, how was she not aware?

She closed her eyes and sighed, concentrating on his hand against her skin, superimposing the feeling above the problem of perfection. The method didn't aid her in coming to a conclusion any sooner, but it was more soothing than stressful, and she gladly accepted as much.

Then it stopped, and there was nothing but cool air where his warm hand had been. A noise of protest followed, seemingly reflexive, just in time for him to hear it internally.

"Ah," she murmured, laying a docile hand over his head. "A concerning irregularity. Not perfect, then."

One eye opened, just barely, and she tried to smile.

"I suspect that it is failing to properly react to you. It has a deficiency that it must make up for, you know. Perhaps it is trying too hard to maintain its convincing performance, despite its lack of informed capability."

Robert didn't move, when silence fell. Several long seconds passed, before a sound that was suspiciously similar to a growl reverberated from his chest. He pushed himself up to face her again, and his expression was dark, from anger. Deep, dark anger.

"When you tell me that your heart is incapable, despite everything I've already felt - and seen - it do, you have no idea how angry I get. Angry because you really believe that. Angry at everyone in your life that made you think that, even for one goddamned second. Angry, because your heart belongs to me now, and I ain't taking that s**t, anymore."

His hands moved around to her back, pulling her up flush against him, and his dark eyes glared down with determination.

"I promised myself I'd be patient. And I will. I will, I promise. But that ain't gonna stop me from getting angry when you don't believe me when I tell you - Mimsy, your heart is perfect to me. It's perfect. And it does react just right to me, every single time."

His lips came down, crushing against hers hard. He forced her lips to part, and took from her what he wanted, without asking. He took her kiss, and returned his desire.

It was a long, long time before he let her breathe again.

"I'm gonna tell you something right now. I know this isn't gonna magically make everything better, and you ain't gonna magically take my word for it. But I'm still going to make your heart race for me, just like it does every time, just because I wanna feel it prove you wrong."

He lifted her up, turning to lay on his back and settling her down on top of him. The anger was fading fast, but his expression still looked dark, even if it was for different reasons.

"It's my favorite pasttime."

Sometimes, Mimsy couldn't help herself. When she felt at all lost, or found herself without her toes on the ground, she pushed on buttons and tugged on strings until something happened. Something that she could observe, consider, quantify, latch onto, run along with, follow down a rabbit hole.

In this case, something undeniably happened.

Until now, their back-and-forth had lulled her into a sluggish, sleepy state; she'd been leading him further into delusion, until he would be irrevocably lost with her, but she couldn't stop herself from experimenting. The reaction was extraordinary and unexpected, and a gasp got caught in her throat as it failed to decide between alarmed or excited.

With wide eyes, she listened. They didn't look curious for once, nor eager, nor frightened - just very, very attentive. Tenaciously so.

She listened until he stopped speaking with words, then listened in a different way, until he stopped that to return to speaking again. It was a taxing task to try to listen this time, her mind still lingering on the last segment of 'conversation', and she blinked through the haze to look down at him. Her glasses were askew, and she did not appear entirely present at the moment, but she made an effort to respond nonetheless.

"I do not enjoy being wrong." She leaned forward, putting both hands on his chest to support herself as she made a show of a frown. "But I suppose you intend to prove that wrong too, don't you?"

Robert leaned up, ignoring the hands that tried to press down on his chest, until they had to give up or bend in order to accommodate his movement. When he reached her, he grabbed her collar with one finger, and pulled.

Then, and only then, did he smile. She would appreciate just how cheshire-like it happened to be.

"Yes. And that's the last time you're gonna be right about anything, tonight."
