Whether the sprite's anxious and exuberant chiming was supposed to be relaxing or not, Lerin found it quite inviting. Especially when the only other option was probably tense, awkward silence between he and the Alkidike. He sighed contentedly as her tiny fingers flicked through his hair. She was quite a friendly little thing! And so lively! Very charming, and Lerin couldn't help but chuckle at her sounds.
By the time they reached the little patch of bushes, he felt significantly calmed by the sprite's antics. Smiling, he went and plucked a flower from between the leaves, offering it gingerly to the sprite. Once she'd taken it, he selected another and moved toward Dyakida's side. "We made it," he told her in a quiet hum as he slid the flower toward her, delicately brushing it against her forearm before letting it trail down to her fingers. "I'm afraid they don't all look exactly the same," Lerin admitted as further inspection revealed a lighter color as well as dulled edges. "But that's part of the beauty of them, I think. They're all different..."
He let the flower settle in her hand, and then moved a pace away. "Once you're satisfied here, I'll take you to the trees. They grow a little more abundantly, so I'm sure there are at least a few closer to where you live."

Peyla was pleased at her gift, crooning a happy sound as she cuddled the orange flower to her. Dark-hair-man was nice. She liked dark-hair-man. He was pretty, too, which made him even better.Didn't look the same? Dyakida would have to trust his assessment. For obvious reasons. ”Mmm. The uniqueness of each one would make them valuable.” she murmured, reluctantly agreeing as she felt the flower.
It seemed, then, that she was left to her own devices. As her sprite caroused and chimed, joyfully, Dyakida began, carefully, to feel her way around the flowers, picking a few that felt appropriate. She didn't know, of course. She had to guess.
I suppose that makes them even more unique... she thought wryly, turning to Lerin, flowers in hand. ”Very well.” she said. ”Lerin, was it?” she said. She remembered the name – he had only introduced himself moments before – but she was grudgingly acknowledging that he was no threat. She contemplated apologizing for before, but decided not to – there was no point, and she didn't think it was warranted.
”Where do you live, Lerin?” she asked, turning his statement to her use.

Lerin's thin lips quirked down as his brow furrowed in thought. "Valuable...?" He repeated softly. His gaze flickered to the bright orange flowers against the dark green bush. He supposed they did look nice. Unique creations of the forest. One small piece of a whole landscape. But valuable hardly seemed like a word to describe them. They were beautiful, special, right at home where they had grown. He of course had one of his own, but he'd made it a point never to take many. And he'd assumed one for each of them would be plenty... Lerin passed his tongue nervously across his lips. "You're not... Going to sell them, are you?" he questioned hesitantly.
Not that he had anything against profit. He just... wasn't entirely sure how often she'd need to come and collect the little orange treasures. Hopefully not so often that they'd disappear... He swallowed at the thought. Alkidike surely weren't the type to cause that, though. The forest was just as much their home as it was his. Lerin dissolved the thought with a tiny shake of his head, instead reaching for the woman's arm to guide her off toward the aforementioned trees.
"I live close enough that coming here isn't too much of a chore," he admitted waywardly, not entirely willing to give the seemingly prickly woman his exact home location. "Up in the trees with my mom and dad." Once he was certain she would follow from his- and the sprite's sounds again, he freed her to take a few paces ahead. "It's not special, but it is home, I suppose."

”Yes.” she said, surprised. Had the shifter not realized this? ”I cannot enjoy them myself.” she explained, as if it wasn't obvious. She did not like his tone of rebuke.
”I live... not far from here as well.” she said, ”In a tree, with my sisters.”Peyla chimed happily – and her! Dyakida lived with her too! She was the most important of them all, of course. She would remember this spot for Dyakida, yes. And the other one too. Peyla was very useful!
She followed, hugging her flower to her. It was fragile – if she hugged too hard she would bruise it. The thought dismayed the sprite – she would need to make it stay the way it was, and soon, before she hurt the pretty thing...

Lerin's brows knit together as he fidgeted awkwardly. She couldn't enjoy them herself? He opened his mouth to scoff out a reply, but closed it quickly as he bit back words he may regret. he swallowed and passed his tongue nervously across his lips. While he couldn't possibly fathom being sightless, he still hoped such a thing wouldn't eliminate the beauty of the world. She couldn't see the flowers, but she could still caress soft petals or inhale their sweet scent... There was more to be enjoyed about them than just their looks.
But he wouldn't say that. Instead, he murmured out a soft, "I'm sorry to hear that..." as his lids dipped lower.
He quieted as he guided them through the trees, accented only by the sounds of the sprite's chimes. She seemed happy, at least, even if the whole situation was starting to make Lerin more uncomfortable than he would've liked. After several moments of silence, and many a footfall through the brush, Lerin paused to look back at the Alkidike woman. If she couldn't appreciate the flowers, there probably wasn't much hope of her appreciating the trees, either. Still, maybe if he just... hinted.
"So with these trees... You- you have to be careful," he whispered, voice ghosting along with the wind. "They don't have a thick coating of bark, so there's no reason to puncture them too deeply or roughly. Just a little pinch right at the edge, so as not to harm them more than necessary."

Hmm... she didn't need his apology. She listened to his voice carefully, trying to figure out what he was trying to hint at in the undertones and underpitches within it. ”Show me.” she said, offering her hand, ”Show me how hard to pinch...” she grimaced, ”Not on my skin.” she had no desire to be pinched, ”But on the tree.”
She knew it was an odd request, but she did, indeed, not want to harm a resource that could give her much business – and joy in her craft – and have to find a new one further afield. And, with some plants in Jahuar, handling them was tricky and there was a fine line between handling them properly and handling them dangerously...

Lerin blinked, confusion and surprise spearing across his features as Dyakida offered him her open palm. "If... that is what you wish..." He murmured uncertainly, hesitantly collecting her hand in his and tugging her toward the slim and smooth trunk of the tree.
"It's... kind of amazing, isn't it?" The Shifter whispered conversationally as he tucked all but his companion's pointer finger down into a fist. "The trees around here are so tall and large, but they really have so little protection." He took her finger and scraped the nail against the wood, collecting a pulp of flimsy bark beneath it. "I've heard that Tale's trees are much thicker and hardier. and much more sparse. Wouldn't that be a sight to see? And how strange, the residents must make their homes on the ground."
"Can you feel it?" He asked after just a moment of scraping. "That moisture there is the resin. As I've said before, it's a little thick, so it takes a while to fully emerge. But if you return tomorrow, there will be several sap beads for you to collect- I just scoop them up with leaves, myself. Then add water and paint it on whatever you wish to preserve."

Dyakida memorized the complicated tactile sensations – the way her finger had to move along the bark, the way she had to pinch, how hard she had to pinch, what the resin felt like, what the bark felt like... All of these were categorized and remembered for later, when she would return for the resin.
”I have actually had personal experience with Tale wood. It is, indeed, very sturdy.” she commented, still a little distant and wary – though obviously she trusted him enough to offer her hand. ”It requires special tools to carve.”
She listened to him explain that she needed to wait, and she knew that Peyla would lead her back here later. ”Thank you, Lerin, for showing this to me.” she said, gently retrieving her hand from his. If he had wanted to hurt her, he would have done so by now.
Peyla chimed abruptly in her ear – the sprite herself did not want to go, but time was ticking by and Peyla had suddenly realized it was late. Dyakida needed to return and have dinner. And, of course, provide some for Peyla.
”I must go now.” Dyakida said, inclining her head respectfully before turning to walk away, the sprite holding her hand and waving sadly to the shifter. ”Do be careful out here, Lerin. It is very dangerous.” she warned.

DraconicFeline And you can mark this one as done~ Lerin dipped his head, grateful for her understanding, wary of her ambitions and only slightly relieved by her departure. The sprite chimed, and his gaze found Peyla only a second later. To be honest, the Shifter didn't know much about sprites. The must live all across Tendaji. Have families of their own. Why they chose to stay with people, he'd likely never know. But this one had chosen Dyakida. So surely, surely she was not so bad.
If a sprite of nature stood loyally by her side, she didn't seem liable to bring to much harm to the expansive tree. "You needn't worry about me," he murmured to her retreating frame. "I've been fine on my own as of yet." And that was true enough. Dangerous as the forest was, he'd traversed this route by himself many times. The Alkidike's concern only seemed... slightly out of place, considering her race, but perhaps that was fine too.
For now, he was off toward home once again.
