"What a shame," said May Day, shaking his mane a little. "Maybe one day a ferry'll come by and some phonies will celebrate with you, instead! I'm sure a lighthouse is quite educational."
He nodded, then looked at her trunk with interest. "Vawd-what?" he laughed, a touch self-conscious. "I don't, I guess. Well, obviously."

"Vaudeville," Cast Aweigh explained with no sign of patronizing. "Back when we didn't have things like cellphones and HDTV's and not everyone had a telephone in their house or even power or telegram lines that traveled to their town. Back when all you had was each other to entertain live, right there on a stage, and makeup with lights and a pit of musicians if you could afford it! It was the only source of entertainment for really poor people, I hear," Cast said. "Of course, I read it all in my books. I would have liked to see it for myself, so I pretend I'm a villain in an old movie!" Cast put on a long mustache made of dyed wool and a tattered black cape. "NYA-HA-HA! I am here for the farmer's daughter! If she does not marry me, I will tie her to the TRACKS!"

"OH!" Exclaimed May Day, the words and pictures suddenly clicking into place as Cast put on the quick costume -- he'd seen those sorts of shows before, both in grainy black and white format and in the Dudley Do-Right variety. He began to laugh, reaching in the box and pulling out a wig of brown bottle curls, thwapping it on his own head. "Oh nooooo~!" He squeaked in his best falsetto. "I do declare this dastardly villain will do away with me!" And he feigned a swoon, the curls swinging helplessly as he fell into a heap.

"This is your last chance, Anabelle!" Cast said, pretending to tie May's front hooves with a bit of old scarf. "Marry me and I won't leave you to the whim of the rails!" Cast laughed at the thought,"Who thought this was a good idea? 'Oh, yeah, I'm totally in love with this guy now that he's threatened to kill me!'"

"Nooo~" wailed May Day, although the curly wig had flopped forward and obstructed view of his eyes, his voice every bit as forlorn and dramatic as the cartoons he remembered. As Cast Aweigh spoke, the foal couldn't help but laugh along. The thought had never occurred to him, but it was truly bizarre. "That's true!" he snickered. "Can't you imagine? 'I'm just not sure about George... He's never shown me he loves me, you know, tied me up on some railroad tracks or to a bunch of TNT or anything!'"

X3 )) "Either way, it would be a good idea if you learned how to disguise yourself on a day where someone'd think you look really good dangling from the end of a line," Cast laughed. "You're welcome to take or use anything from this trunk! I'd be happy to mail you things from time to time." Cast laughed along with her new friend. It was good to find something to share in and to laugh along to. It was within that moment that she learned that laughter can often relieve the anxiety other people have and it was something she new she could offer to help a friend.

May Day smiled at his new friend. Their laughter had calmed his nerves, and already he was feeling more calm about the approaching Date Which Must Not Be Named. "I'd really appreciate that. Thanks a lot, Cast!" Syrcaid boop! all done! thanks so much, it was fun!
