Maybe Stormy was just being polite or careful in her planning, but the fact that Abbi had been chosen despite all the other awesome Moons there were still made her sparkle quite brightly. Even if she turned the face away so as not to interrupt her friend's explanation. That and the fact that her Avengers reference had been spot on was really inclining Abbi to totally digging this adventure. They were totally, definitely, for sure going to get the artifact and rescue Nevada! Still, there was a mini-lecture to listen to and the teen was all ears. It was far denser than her explanation of the machine and with a lot more details. There were a lot of things she had questions on, but now didn't really seem to be the time to ask them, so Abbi quietly requested that Viveca store them somewhere for easy access later on. It was a small game the girl had invented that her ghost pretended to play along with, but at least one of them would recall to inquire after more details later. With a small smile she accepted the lighter, holding it carefully in the palm of her hand. It wouldn't do much, Abbi knew that, especially if she couldn't find any tinder in the cave, but it would have to do. Even if Stormy kept saying her weapon wouldn't be bright enough, she didn't know Viveca like Abbi did, so the teen fully believed her weapon would be enough should things get rough. A small 'thanks' was mumbled as she smuggled the thing away into her skirt pocket, before she wrapped her hands around the straps of her backpack. This was a little bit scarier than she'd expected, especially with all that ten foot radius thing... When Jake mentioned staying close to Otto, the teen nodded vigorously and went ahead sticking herself at his side. "Fine by me! I'll be Toto's guide! Especially since we won't be in Kansas and all..." That was a joke she fully expected to receive at least one laugh from, even if the grim face of her appointed partner was doing its best to keep the jokes at bay. Whatever! She'd still try! At least... Once more...

She chuckled at the exchange as she went over to Otto and strapped the machine tight around his arm, almost like a tourniquet. Even though a layer of clothes the cold metal could be felt. "Alright, three! Even better," she said to Jake. "And I was gonna say the same thing. Otto, try and keep to the center of the group if you can. Abbi, you're partnered with him if something finds us. Same thing for you two," Stormy added to Sherry and Jake. "Eclipse and Schrodinger. I'll fill in whatever we need most."
Stormy didn't bother believing nothing would happen. Something always did, so it was better to be prepared.
Moving to the portal, she chatted with the stationed hunter and fiddled with the switches a few times, concentrating. Several times the Haunted House flickered into view, along with a stretch of an empty beach, a rain-stricken shack, and the foot of a series of mountains. Eventually she found her mark.
The portal looked like a yawning, gaping hole into absolute darkness. Faint noises could be heard within.
Stormy steeled herself. "In we go," she said with a grimacing smile and, once the machine was at full strength, stepped in.
The group would find themselves on uneven, stony ground and were greeted with the sounds of dripping water; every echo made it seem like the cave was a little larger than the Mist trainee described. The barrier produced from the machine made a thin but visible shimmer of light around them, indicating their room for maneuverability. Beyond it, though, the hunters could feel something radiating and pressing in on it. As the runic torches were lit, a semblance of a path forward could be made out ahead, through a small but prickly series of stalagmites beginning to form; the walls seemed to narrow further in. Stormy lifted her torch, and at the edge of light several stalagtites peeked in on them--as did more than a few pairs of eyes that quickly ducked out of sight. Several odd-looking insects writhed against the light and crawled to shelter.
She'd been here already, but even so Stormy couldn't suppress a small shiver. It felt a little enclosed here even without the restriction of the barrier. "Alright. Whatever happens, keep moving forward," she told them. "Bug out only as a last resort--"
Something made chitinous sound, out of sight.
"--and don't lose your partner," she finished a little shakily, though after a hard blink the doubt was gone. With a small motion, she began to lead them towards the narrowing walls.
STATUS EFFECT Every action/post taken outside the barrier means -5 HP as the ambient heavy Fear eats away at your shield. The machine's operation is dependent on how healthy the hunter's shield is. The more damage the bearer takes, the less effective it becomes. Should problems emerge, Otto will have to hand it off to someone else in order to keep the Fear concentration from getting to them! At 100% Hunter HP: The barrier is working perfectly well and no-one takes damage, A+. The range is 10 ft around the bearer. At 50% Hunter HP: The barrier begins to lose its strength and flickers. Inside the shield, you take 3 damage and the range shrinks to 6 ft. At 25% Hunter HP: The barrier is incapable of sustaining itself and completely collapses until it comes in contact with a stronger Fear shield. Every turn taken until then results in -5 HP. In addition, at any point you may interact with the surroundings in bold red! (Who doesn't love a good ol' interaction?)

"Sounds good!" It seemed Stormy had a plan of attack, and her full team worked out rather nicely. So far anyway. Hopefully, this would go relatively well. Something started to bubble up inside Sherry as the portal clicked through various destinations. Luckily it was just emotion; nerves or excitement or anxiety, some mix of the three most likely. Pre-mission jitters. It didn't help that even though she'd been warned about the dark, that is was so very, very dark on the other side of that portal. The sound of water sent a chill down her spine, reminding her of the last time a portal had dumped her somewhere dark. At least this time there was a whole group of them, not to mention the barrier from the gizmo Otto held. It's light was somehow a small comfort. As did the torches. A cave. A wet cave, with bugs inside. Insects also brought back memories, another small shiver. "Bug out?" Sherry asked, quietly as she could. Had Stormy just... Sherry had to smile. Even with the strange sounds around them. Momentarily, Jake would find Sherry wrapped one of her arms around one of his. She wasn't losing her partner this time. It was even in Stormy's orders. After another couple steps, she was pulling him towards the edge of their barrier. She was in a group, they had light, and a fancy barrier. Her curiosity was beginning to squash her fear. Caves were...neat. And actually less scary than old houses. "Any idea how deep we are?" she asked, while peering out into the darkness.

In her own way of responding, Abbi flashed Otto her biggest, goofiest o7o-grin face before she burst into a fit of giggles. So he was grumpy, but he'd still gotten the joke and was probably just jealous he hadn't come up with it first. "Oh are we Eclipse? Ha! How funny!" The teen followed along sedately and kept the joke about bad vampires novels to herself. A small twinge of concern reverberated inside her mind when Stormy mentioned filling in wherever she was needed, because even if that was fine, shouldn't she have a partner? If something happened to her while the others were busy, would she be alright on her own? Blue eyes studied the other girl for a while, but after careful consideration Abbi decided that this was a very capable group. They could handle everything that was thrown their way! The technology of the Island was still exciting and new to the teen, so she was wide eyed and frantic to pull in as many visual details as possible while the hunter on station got things going. The images the portal reflected were all interesting, the beach made her jump in particular, but she waited until it had settled before she made any movement. It wasn't much, just a small shift closer to Otto before she hurried after Stormy. Stepping into darkness was pretty scary on its own, but stepping into darkness that lightened to a small ring of protection was somehow scarier. They'd have to keep close, which Abbi made certain of by hanging right at Otto's elbow. "Yeesh... This place looks like a spelunking heaven..." It wasn't contributory, but it was something to say just to break up that dull sound of water dripping from a high, stone ceiling. For a second her mouth screwed up in a frown before she bent down to run her hand along the ground in a small swipe inside the light just to see what would happen.

S-schrondinger? He was guessing Eclipse was referring to the sun/moon duo, but really, it didn't seem like there were any decent names for Life/Death. Not that... that was really a concern right now.
He nodded at Stormy, hoping it wouldn't have to come to that. Despite most if not all the missions they've had pretty much ending up horribly, there could... always the chance that one runs smoothly... right? At least one could hope.
As the portal to their destination opened, he couldn't help but feel uneasy. Pre-mission jitters, as one would call it, he supposed. It wasn't that long since his last one, but even then, he wasn't really looking forward to what they'd run into.
The surrounding was also given a grimace as he noticed several pairs of eyes illuminated by the torch, and the sound of skittering. Exactly the same. He felt Sherry's grip around his arm, and turned to her, giving her an uneasy smile. Right. It might have seemed the same, but this time, it'd be different. He wouldn't let harm come to her. He wouldn't lose anyone. He just had to be more aware.
With Sherry clutching one arm, he raised the other arm with the torch closer to the wall.

Gugh. Dark, damp caves. If there was one place he hated more than others, this was it. He tried to keep his memories of the Horsemen dungeon deep down where they belonged, even though every darkened corner seemed to scream at him. He needed to stay calm. He needed to stop shaking. No one in this group needed to know how terrified he was of something as simple as a dark cave. Control his feelings, bury them deep, deep down. He kept silent, making it easier to keep his unease hidden. Being with a group felt safer, sure. But it was no less unpleasant, and all the more pressure to act normal. He was at the centre of the light, so he had that going for him. He saved his torch for later, just in case.

The shield seemed to briefly pulse inward the more certain fears were thought about.
"None," Stormy told Sherry in an undertone as she squinted ahead. "Not specifically. There's no light coming in at all, so I assume deep enough." It was said with the absent tone of someone who didn't want to know the cold hard facts of just exactly where they were, nor about the layers of rocks and dirt and God only knew what else sitting above them.
As they scooted through the narrow space between the walls and waded through the fledgeling floor spikes, another hiss could be heard, much closer than before. In fact, it originated from right under Abbi's fingers: she had disturbed a dust-covered bug about the size of her index finger and the width of two, black and brown and twitching. There was something off about its structure, though it scuttled away from the light as fast as possible before it could really be identified.
Jake's torch shed a little more light on the subject: Several shiny carapaces glinted dully, embedded in the wall like a series of uneven scabs. Opened scabs. Up and ahead, at the limits of their vision, the group could see many more protruding from the uneven stone, each similar to the casings left behind post-metamorphosis.
Alarm bells were going off in Stormy's head as a longer, lower hiss echoed in the cavern. "Weapons out," she instructed, as if one needed to be told at this point. The hissing, at first occasional, began to grow louder and more frequent the further in they went. Their next point, a natural bridge with jagged edges that stretched over a chasm, laid ahead. It appeared stable enough.
The barrier throbbed again a split second before a piercing shriek was made above them.
Something was shifting. Many somethings were shifting, actually: when the horde of insects came into range of the runic torches, the very walls teemed in waves with their numbers. They were like cockroaches in bodies, but each varied in size (some only as big as the one Abbi had accidentally unearth, others closer to the length of their forearms), shape, and even body parts, some biologically impossible, others grotesque. Some sported a fine array of legs that scuttled in waves, others had half-sprouted second heads that spat and hissed, even more had body horrors to numerous to list in full: slinking worms, organs that had no business being there to begin with dragging along, eyes misproportioned and glaring with an almost intellectual glint, jaws fused open with pincers, engorged abdomens too large for their forms that dragged dark fluid, mouths jutting from bellies, tails that looked suspiciously like spines, even a few half-crushed already by their brethren and bleeding . . .
The lights made them easy to target.
They lurched forward with purpose and quickly invaded the floor in a matter of seconds. Some could be smashed underfoot, while others still required a weapon to properly kill. A green-faced Stormy cut a row of them out with a swing of her broadsword and burned several more with her torch (noting that fire seemed to make them back off, if temporarily), but one thing was clear: the number of Fear-mutated insects was far more than could be calculated. "We have to get across!" she shouted over the skittering and scraping of rock, her voice higher than usual as she crushed a bug promptly under her boot. "They don't like the torches, so use--"
The piercing shriek from before resounded, this time from the wall to their left. Something large and dark sprung at them--
-- and bowled them over as easily as a wrecking ball through a brick wall, sending runic torches (and possibly even weapons, though that was not as horrifying a thought) flying.
Otto and Abbi were simply thrown back, the latter further than the former. The sound of their thuds was a dinner bell as they were immediately set upon by the insects. Jake and Sherry, however, were half-pinned under the massive creature.
It could have been made by a child's worst fears: the size of a minivan, it had two sets of multifaceted eyes set into what looked and felt like organic armor, its body a mesh of what looked like a hissing cockroach's overall design, a spider's segmented, spine covered legs (several engorged or shrunk, two fused, and one that was actually more snakelike than anything else) and hidden fangs, a chitonous horn springing from its nose and one eye, and a maligned scorpion tail. As if the fetid stench from the horde wasn't enough, it was especially foul coming off of this one: like rotten meat and sewage combined with swamp mud. There was a vertical split along its belly that the pair would notice was actively chewing through their shield with bleeding, cracked teeth, drooling digestive juices.
Knocked hard but not caught under the mutant, Stormy was almost immediately set upon by several of the larger insects. Rather than actively attack, however, these seemed keen on dragging her towards the cliff like a horrible, misshapen boat bearing her over the sea of smaller bugs. Temporarily stunned, the most she could do was flail with fiesty, ineffectual punches and kicks for now until she remembered her senses as her partner roared in her mind to act. Her torch had fallen by the wayside, a small ring of light the swarm parted around like the rest.
The group needed to act and act fast, or the mission would fall apart before it truly began.
Stormy HP: 50 - 10 = 40STATUS EFFECT exclaim ZERG RUSHToo much light has upset the local population of Fear-infected insects. sad The Fear Barrier can protect them from overexposure, but sadly not from physical manifestations of said exposure. You may only take one action this turn (though purely rp posts are unlimited), which in turn can affect the battle in a variety of ways! With that in mind, here are your options. Sherry and Jake can: Attack: Roll 2d10-6 (While full hunters have 2d12, you are....pinned at the moment....) Struggle to break free: Roll 1d10. If even, you manage to damage the insect overlord for 3 damage and are a little closer to breaking free! If odd, the snake-like leg strikes out with its own set of malformed jaws (that seem surprisingly human) for 5 damage. Defend: Roll 1d8 (the regular defense dice for hunters is 1d10, however you are again pinned....). If one person struggles while being defended the other and is successful, the one who struggled is able to slip completely free while doing 5 damage to the boss! The one who is defending, however, will get 5 damage as the boss squashes them against its unnatural underbelly mouth. You may also simply both defend yourself from damage this round. If someone comes to assist them, a struggle will only fail if they roll a 1-2! If both Abbi and Otto go to assist them, all struggles will be automatically successful! In this case doing so would not take up a turn, leaving them free to make a new decision. (ie: attack with regular dice, defend with regular dice, etc.) Abbi can: Aid Sherry and Jake: You may attack the boss once with a -4 modifier instead of a -6 due to its size. Aid Stormy: You may attack any of the several insects with your regular modifier. Defend yourself/Otto against the insect horde: Roll your regular defense dice (1d6). If you choose to defend Otto, you will automatically defer to whatever action he decides on. Otto can: Choose any of the same decisions as Abbi! However, right now only he and Abbi are under the protection of the barrier. Whoever is not by my next post will take an additional 5 damage, but the group has been scattered too far to encompass them all this turn. He has to decide who needs the barrier more right now. Stormy can: fend the vermin off for herself...sort of... ((With that doozy done (thanks a lot, dice!), here's your damage by post order! Hopefully that wasn't too confusing (it's past 3am idk), but you can always im/pm me with questions/alternative options!))

Quote: HP: 55 / 60 Damage: Charge:
It all went to Hell so quickly. He always expected as much. What made it excruciating was the circumstances. He'd already been on edge from the darkness and the memories a cave brought him. What rendered him useless was the bugs. Not just any bugs. If there was a limit to how terrifying and unsettling bugs could get, these things broke it with a jackhammer. But he couldn't run away. Not only would it show them what a coward he was, he'd leave them to die. He was in charge of something vital here, snd he couldn't leave them. So he stood his ground, even as his own skin wished to crawl away from him. He felt a panic attack begin. He would die simply being in the presence of everything this cave had to offer. Suddenly, he was knocked down. It didn't hurt so much, but it made him panic even more. Every second was a fight with his heart. It raced so hard it hurt inside. He could see them, hear them. The bugs were coming for him. They'd burrow within his body like the first had. He wanted to cry. To scream. To die and be rid of this overwhelming emotion of fear. The team was scattered. In trouble. Otto needed to somehow get everyone within the safety of the machine again. But all he could do was yell as he lashed out at every little creature that came to snack on him. All he could think was of panic and disorder. What could he do? Why did he always have a decision to make? Save Stormy? Save the other two? Where was Abbi? What was he supposed to do? How was he going to think with all this buzzing of fear in his mind.

HP: 40-8= 32 There was so much movement and noise from all around that at first Abbi hadn't realized what was moving under her hand. For a split second she thought it was just the dirt resettling from her touch, but quickly discovered the truth. A small, but PG rated, swear left her as she stumbled back and up, quick to try and stomp on it a second later without success. Disgusted by the things all around, she flailed around for a second or two in the manner of one who is terribly squeamish before the instruction from Stormy sunk in. With no flourish Abbi summoned her scythe and clutched it close, trying to focus on the somewhat soothing scold from Viveca rather than the noise and general sense of dread. That was, of course, impossible a moment later when the bugs seemed to get curious about their guests. As disgusting and terrible as they were, she was glad they were not centipede-like and clung to that small consolation... At least until she noticed how absolutely dreadful the creatures were. A second later the girl was on the ground, the wind knocked out of her painfully as she clattered down and then back up, grasping for her weapon with clumsy, frightened hands. Logic dictated that assessing the situation came before action, so the girl quickly scanned was she could as she rose to shaking feet. Sherry and Jake were under the very terrifying looking bug, Stormy was about to be tossed over the cliff and Toto was-- "Cheesus on toast." Careful not to be too sudden, Abbi hustled over to Otto and showed him the palm of one hand, a peace offering made obvious with her lack of time. "I know that look, bro. I've worn that look a lot and like, I'm so sorry but this is not the time for that. We-- You... You are a full hunter! And we don't have-- Hey! Hey, Toto, hey Toto listen to me, ok? In for three counts, out for four. You got that?" It felt odd to speak so brusquely, but even in her firmest voice it half sounded like she was going to laugh. But the teen did nod at him encouragingly before she breathed in for three and out for four, expectantly looking at him to mimic her. After that, she gestured quite quickly to the thing on his arm. "Keep breathing, ok? You've got to breath for me, but this is just a minor thing... Full Hunters can handle this, amirite?" Afraid to put anymore pressure on him, she did reach out quickly to squeeze his arm, hating to take time like this but knowing if he gave himself over to the panic that glinted in his eyes they'd all be done for.

Abbi. She was trying to talk him out of his panic. He knew what she was saying was true. There were pressing matters to deal with. People to save. But his mind wouldn't let him focus on it. There was a blockade in the shape of millions of bugs, and the overwhelming feeling that he'd need to puke if he had to take any actions besides running. But he obliged. He tried to breathe with her, his eyes constantly darting to the bugs around, shaking them off and interrupting his attempts. This was stupid. He was pathetic. He was a failure as a full hunter. "I know!" He yelled, baring his teeth in anger, mostly at himself. He knew he should know better, not to let this get to him. It was hard. Almost impossible. "Handle it.. yeah right." Full Hunter just meant he'd survived this long. What did it really mean if this was how he fell? He shook his head. He needed a target. Focus. Too many distractions and reasons to panic. He settled for the mother of all bugs. The bigger it was, the easier it was to cope. They were more likely to decapitate you than burrow inside you. He'd fight it. He'd kill it and it would solve it all! If only he could concentrate long enough to summon Tenya..... Her own panic rose in her chest like thick cotton that threatened to stop up her throat if she didn't do something else. As much as she wanted to run away, Abbi knew there was nowhere to go. The instinct still kicked around uselessly in her mind but it was easier to ignore with the help of a particular head mate who growled whenever the thought pushed forward. Initially she flinched when Otto yelled, even if she figured out he wasn't yelling on account of her. But the way he was poorly trying to breath wasn't putting the teen at ease and his less than stellar standing around wasn't either. There was no time left to stand around. If Abbi stood anymore she would lose Stormy to bugs ( again) and then Sherry and Jake would be devoured. Though she didn't want to, the girl rushed right up to Otto and took his forearms in her hands. "OK. OK. In for three, do it right now or... Or I'll tell Ripley that um you... You did something dumb I'll think of later, ok?" She gave him her most serious look and lead him through breathing one more time before she tried a smile. "Remember who we're here for, OK?" That might add more pressure, but it was all she could do at the moment. Her hands shook him gently, more a gesture that she didn't want to touch a veritable stranger than to rouse him, before they popped off him and took back up the scythe she had momentarily shouldered. One more nod was given to Otto before Abbi turned around and ran over to the parade of bugs trying to literally overthrow Stormy. "Batter up!" She shouted as she swung the blade down and through the crowd of bugs. "Not my best, both joke-wise and for damage, but hey! Just warmin' up here!" Yes, she would continue the jokes. Sorry not sorry. “Hmm.” Sherry was very intrigued by this cave, so far. A shame they didn’t know exactly where and how deep, but she could always research that more later. They did have more pressing issues anyway. Like the bugs. Which were far more unsettling up close. Were those shiny things even bugs? They looked more…like they were in the rock. Weird. Armagnac was in her hand as Stormy’s order, and sherry felt herself ease a tiny bit. When had she started to stress? Probably when they arrived. Weird how missions made you feel. All anxious and trying to hide it. Especially when things around you were—the screeching dragged Sherry out of her musings just in time for things to move. Things that were grotesque and things that were normal. Bugs and ewww. She hardly had time to process it before they were on them. She swung at the swarm, instinct driving her to fight what which was obviously going to harm them. She’d hardly started to fight back when the scream was heard again, and something slammed into them. It was huge, from her vantage point, and the stench of it caused her to gag, or would have if she weren’t having trouble catching her breath already. She tried to move, but weight pressed down on her leg, her hip. She could feel something against her other leg, something not right. There was more- Someone was down with her- Jake. The others… A quick glance didn’t show her much, she caught sight of what must have been Otto or Abbi, but just enough to know they were clear of the beast. The beast that was trying to eat her and Jake. “Crap.” Armagnac? She didn’t need to ask the weapon, Sherry could feel the shield draining even without being told. I know. Apologies could come later. For now, Sherry put some effort into desummoning and then resummoning her weapon. A little draining, maybe, but Sherry needed the glaive. The blade of her weapon ended up between Jake and the belly of the beast, more or less. It was a horrid angle to try and attack from, but she could try and keep it from eating at least one them. “Move,” she said to Jake. HP: 50/60 Target: Jake Defended for: 6

Upon seeing the insect unearthed by Abbi, Jake couldn't help but give a disgusted look. Seriously, why was it always bugs? He turned to look at the wall which had been illuminated by the torch, and stared at the shells embedded in it. What the-
"Weapons out."
He heard Stormy's voice, and while he hadn't seen any immediate threat yet, he did as told, glad that he was still able to hold the torch while doing so, but it was a small relief.
The piercing shriek that followed shortly nearly made him drop it, and he stared wide-eyed at the abomination before them. "Holy shi-" And then they moved, and he quickly pushed Sherry away so that he could stand in front of her, slashing away at some and scorching others that got too close.
But of course, things always went from bad to worse. He barely registered the second shriek before the creature lurched forward, knocking the wind (and torch) out of him, nearly crushing him underneath its weight. He cursed loudly, trying to shove it off, but froze when he heard a strange sort of sound. Kinda like...
He looked up to see a row a bloody, serrated teeth mere inches above his face. The only thing that seemed to be preventing it from chewing it off were his weapons, raised the the blade facing the creature.
A blade suddenly appeared out of nowhere, piercing the abomination, and Jake turned, seeing Sherry. s**t, she got pinned too? He didn't want to leave her, but... she was right. If one of them didn't do something, they'd both be eaten alive.
And so he pushed, gritting his teeth as he tried to force his way out, slashing at it as he did so. Thanks to Sherry, he managed to get out, but she...
