Finally! They'd found the lusus! Don't think that Dairah didn't notice Forera eyeing the inventory, though, because she did. She hoped that they wouldn't come to blows over the "merchandise." Besides, stealing was for lowbloods. Why would a tealblood need to steal?

Staying close to the inventory, Dairah pitched her net at the lusus to make it easier for Alifax to attack. "Go get 'em, cowboy!" she shouted, not caring whether that was an appropriate epithet or not.

Kursha was still a bit miffed at Forera for taking the leading on the previous day. The storm had passed however, and his mood brightened somewhat. It had been absolutely miserable staying inside, when they could have been outside, hunting down the lusus or collecting treasure. Not to mention, he had been holed up with a couple of lowbloods of all things. He had spent most of the remaining night skulking in a corner with his lusus.

Day came and went; when the last rays of sunlight disappeared, the group was up and ready to go. The night began sort of slow. Dairah took the lead this time - much to Kursha's chagrin - and they discovered a strange, charred device. Forera seemed excited by the device, but Kursha was uninterested. It looked like just a plain, broken piece of crap. Still, Dairah stowed it away anyway and on they went.

It was not long after that Kursha heard the thundering of... of... of something. Moments later, the lusus came into view. Kursha paled somewhat. The noise he was hearing was the sound of its feet pounding the desert sand. It was massive. Still, the others were preparing for action and Kursha was not about to be outdone. He began to whirl one end of the net, to give it some momentum. Then he heard Dairah call out to Alifax.

Oh no. She did not just call the redblood the cowboy. That would not do. Kursha was the cowboy here. Still, he had left his rifle at home. It was impossible to prove his western power without it... or was it?

An idea came to him then - in the back of his mind he sensed that it was a terrible idea but he had a point to prove. Giving his net one last whirl, he flung it towards the wild lusus, where it became tangled on a horn and a leg. Then, darting forward, Kursha leapt onto the netting and began to climb up onto the beast's back. It was not easy needless to say with all the thrashing and flailing. Somehow though, he managed. A moment later, the greenblood sat perched on the enormous beast's back.

It was a very dangerous position.

“Yahoo!” Kursha whooped. Somewhere above him he heard the Colonel let out an angry scream. He started to wave towards the others but found his fingers were losing their grip on the net. That and the net was losing its grip on the lusus.

A second later, the wild lusus gave a powerful buck and Kursha went flying off. He landed in a nearby sand dune with a gentle thump.

Cowboy?

Alifax would've stood there being confused, but as it was the lusus had nearly escaped the nets being tossed at it from every direction already. He chased after it swiftly, deftly tossing his meteors toward the beast. This was a nice routine, he thought, and was briefly glad for all the practice FLARPing had given him. The sound of the meteor cracking against the lusus was a grand thing, and he would've been pleased if not for the...other projectile. Headed toward the lusus.

Was that...that was the greenblood. What on Alternia? "That might be dangerous!" Alifax exclaimed, rather unhelpfully. But - all too quickly - Alifax realized that his meteor smacking against the lusus' side had caused it, to, well, kick. Kick...powerfully. Powerfully enough to knock the little child off its back. Oh - oh dear. Alifax hoped he wouldn't have to file a report for this.

Alifax swung the other end of his meteors around again and smacked them firmly into the lusus: unfortunately, this seemed to loosen it from its bond, and it zipped off into the distance. Apparently it didn't like shouty, heavy greenbloods.

That was okay, though, because there were clearly more pressing matters at hand here! Alifax hurried over to Kursha and offered him a hand. "Are you quite all right? I can improvise something if necessary; I don't know why we weren't, um, provided with medikits..." He was uncharacteristically talkative today, but a potentially injured child was important. Kursha's lusus might take objection to Alifax's, er, carelessness. Anyway, regarding the matter at hand: surely the army suppliers had anticipated injury? The lusus seemed - well, not violent. It hadn't outright attacked anyone in the group. It seemed dangerous; that was the right word. If only he'd had the foresight to steal some sort of first aid kit from the supply tent...

Well, there was no use in wishful thinking, and in all honesty, Alifax would never have dared attempt to steal from the imperial stores in a place almost certainly guarded by cameras and competent guards and drones. He knelt and checked his bags - maybe he'd brought along some sort of...homemade poultice? A generic pain reliever or something would be more helpful than nothing. They did still have to go on; Alifax wasn't sure what he'd have to do if he had to answer for having abandoned the task the group had been assigned to.

Kursha groaned. His back was killing him - no surprise there considering it had received the full impact of his landing. Luckily nothing was broken; He was just a bit sore and a bit winded.

As he tried to reorient his thoughts, Kursha stared up at the clear night sky. The colonel was descending. Kursha closed his eyes. He could already imagine her rage. It had been a poor decision, he knew, and he would pay for it later. The Colonel did not like to be embarrassed.

When Kursha opened his eyes again, the redblood stood over him, hand extended. For a moment, Kursha almost took it. Then he remembered his nearby lusus. Sitting up, Kursha slapped Alifax's hand away.

“I'm fine,” he snapped. It was true. Physically he was all right. His pride however was a different matter. Kursha stood, keeping his face impassive. He began to dust himself down. “Which way did the lusus go?” he asked curtly in an attempt to move past embarrassing incident.

Forera honestly could not hold her laughter when she saw Kursha fly like a wingbeast into the night sky and land EXTREMELY far from where he was next to them. She was doubled over-- for a troll that acted like he owned each piece of the ground in which he stood in, he sure looked re-DONKulous up there HAHAHAHA. She was still giggling madly when they all went up to them to help him. When he pushed away Alifax's hand, Forera pursed her lips... Was it because he was a red-blood? How bloodist of him... She narrowed her eyes slightly. "No where near you. After that I think it'll go out of it waaaay to avoid us! Pfft, you looked hilarious!" She was tempted to praise him for doing it, but right now, she felt bitter. What a d**k. She thought, wrinkling her nose at him, then turning around with a small huff. "I think I'll lead!" She said excitedly, tone of voice completely different than the one that was just said. "Okay? Okay!" And off she went with them.

Soon after, Forera was shocked back by a large lusus that came and attacked them with no warning. Forera squealed. Another moment to watch Alifax use his fight skills! This was waaaay too fast for Forera to tackle and grab, hahah!!

REFRESHING REST POST

Everyone in your group is well rested. Your group recovers three stamina, to a maximum of five! Your group recovers 13 hp, if you were previously at zero!

A floppy bouncebeast is no stranger to the desert, and when one bounces into your group’s path you’re suddenly struck with an idea. The lusus has been running wild for a while now… It could probably use a snack.
Your group has captured a live bouncebeast! If the next 2D4 roll result is not to fight the lusus, the group can decide to use the bouncebeast to attract it to their location instead. Your roll will be treated as though it was originally a lusus encounter. The live bouncebeast can only be used once, and the group can only carry one live bouncebeast with them at a time.

A sudden cold snap whisks through the desert. There’s a n** in our nose, a chill in your bones and your cheeks are just a little more vibrant in hue. Fortunately, it doesn’t seem to be much more than a quick blast of frigid air.
This weather effect will remain in play until the next dice are rolled.

Something glinting over a bluff catches your eye. A burrow in the side of the dune yields a bounty of shining golden beetles! And as they say, lucky beetles mean good fortune (and megabux$$$).
Each member of the group has acquired 1 lucky beetle that can be redeemed at the end of the meta for a variety of rewards. You cannot carry any more than 5 lucky beetles total; if you run into this encounter more than 5 times, you cannot collect any more.

Uh oh. The ground rumbles suddenly. Not again! Sure enough, after a moment the rough shaking of the ground resumes with surprising force. It’s an earthquake!

An overenthusiastic bouncebeast hops into view. You don’t pay it any mind at first, but when it starts to get closer—and closer—you realize that spring is in the air. The lovestruck beast assaults your group!
The bouncebeast has 1 HP, but has a +1 to avoid being hit (you will need to roll a 4 or above to hit). Every post in which the lovestruck bouncebeast has not been defeated incurs 1 point of damage to the group (as it wounds the group’s dignity in trying to hump their legs).

It was almost instinct now to swing his meteors at moving things, and so Alifax smacked a meteor almost immediately into the winged lizardbeast's side. That looked like it'd hurt, he noted with satisfaction. Still, though, he didn't manage to avoid it nibbling rather ominously at the group. "Can we - " Oh. He'd nearly forgotten that he was the only person really equipped to hit it right now. Maybe the lusii could help?

But Alifax might not be able to count on that help, he realized. Well, it didn't matter so much. He could take this thing down...probably.

Kursha glared when Forera laughed, but he had already met his daily stupid quota, so for once he kept his mouth shut. He even stayed quiet when Forera said that she would lead. His silence came more from the need to brood than any feelings of regret though.

As Kursha wallowed in self-pity, the group moved on and Kursha trailed a short ways behind.* He kept himself occupied by staring at the shallow footprints in the sand. An hour and several sand dunes later, Forera let out a squeal. Kursha looked up. They had stumbled upon an enormous lizardbeast.

Alifax jumped into action, slamming his weapon into the creature's side. Kursha thought he could almost feel the force of impact. The lizardbeast however was not fazed. Moving through the group like a whirlwind, it batted its tail and nipped at anyone who was not quick enough to get away. When it took after Kursha, the young greenblood tried to side-step but lost his footing on the soft sand and slipped. A second later he felt the lizardbeast's tail swing into him.

Where was a good sized rock when he needed one?

A harsh, angry scream rent the air, and the Colonel dove down from the sky, talons extended. Like a bullet she slammed into the lizardbeast, talons raking and tail lashing. The lizardbeast began to thrash wildly, in an attempt to throw the massive predatory bird. The Colonel raised her wings, fighting for balance. Then she arched her long serpentine neck back. Suddenly, in an instant, her beak had closed around the lizardbeast's throat. There was a jerk, a snap, and then it was dead.

Raising her head, the Colonel let out a bloodthirsty scream, daring the desert world to come fight her. Then, with calm precision she began to dissect the lizardbeast. Several pieces of scaly flesh disappeared down her throat.

*Even if he did not like his current company, splitting up and travelling alone was undeniably stupid. Still, the thought crossed his mind.

Alifax couldn't help it: he gaped a little at the Colonel's, ah, savagery. Someone seemed enthusiastic about killing things, wow! But that was fine, Alifax thought; it was pretty clear from the fact that she hadn't done it yet that she wouldn't be doing the same thing to anyone else in the little, er, party. And Alifax could sympathize, really: he liked the feeling of a satisfying hunt, and the thought that he'd not go hungry that night. Not that the group should go hungry: they were supplied with rations. But the desert might have...interesting meat?

Absorbed in his thought, he lagged a little as the group began to pick up its travels again. But it didn't seem to have mattered - they'd hardly moved a few steps (Colonel seemed, certainly, to be still eating quite viciously) when the sound of the lusus rung in his ear again.

"Hey!" Alifax called, the group's only warning before he surged past them to meet it. His arms swung a little clumsily, and then -

- he hit.

The lusus made a strange screechy noise, and Alifax found himself laughing, of all reactions. It was a pretty strange situation, okay? Although admittedly - admittedly Alifax wasn't sure laughter was the right reaction. It looked pretty beat up by now, but it looked as though it was no less quick than it'd been the last time they'd seen it. It figured. He was sure Flambedad would hang onto life, too. That was why lusii made such great guardians; they were so hard to kill.

Well, most of them, anyway, Alifax thought, remembering the little lizard with its wings. He began sprinting in the direction the lusus seemed to be headed in, hoping to maybe cut it off - although it certainly moved far faster than Alifax could ever hope to.

Forera was undeniably disappointed when Kursha's stupid lusus decided to attack the thing. Alifax was already doing so well!!! He didn't need to come and mess it up!!! She sighed and followed after Alifax, bouncing behind him eagerly, about to ask him some questions on his technique-- before perking at the sound of the lusus. She almost squeed again-- and almost forgot about throwing her net to help out. She lugged it at the lusus, managing to snag it. Throwing a thumbs up toward Alifax, Forera grinned in encouragement. "Gottim!!"

Alifax would've made a noise of encouragement, or something, but he'd already learned the lusus could be fast as....well, fast. So he just swung his meteors overhead again and watched them smack into the lusus' side, hard, and then he turned in Forera's vague direction. "Good job!" he told her, although he wasn't really surprised. The children had already proved themselves to have fairly good aim, and the lusus was a hard target to miss. Although perhaps it was hard to throw the net very far with short arms, too.

Well, either way.

Alifax kept moving, though, in anticipation of the lusus' next move.

The pitter-patter of drizzly rain dot the sand with dark freckles. It’s pleasant at first, but soon the rain picks up pace. A roar of rolling thunder heralds a torrential rainstorm! Soon thick, heavy raindrops coat every surface in sight.
This weather effect will remain in play until a 1, 3, or 5 are rolled on a D6.
