I say this as someone who went to school to teach English and took many a practicum class, and tutored for four years of college, and got certified as a Master Tutor in the College Reading and Learning Association.
The WASL and tests like it (FCAT for Florida) are one of the things KILLING our public schools. It goes hand in hand with GRADING our schools, and the private school voucher system.
All it does is further segregate students. Force teachers to teach to test. And kill all the important ways in which students actually learn, Grappling, Modeling, etc.
You don't learn by getting stuff right, you learn by getting it wrong. But now our teachers are so concerned about making sure the STUDENTS GET IT RIGHT that they're not letting them STRUGGLE not letting them truely learn.
Furthermore, the government bases GRADING systems off of these test scores and then schools are busy trying to get good grades to get funding. Schools a C and lower are at risk of LOSING their funding. Tell me how losing funding helps a school with students struggling. Losing money that could help pay for top notch teachers, losing money that could go towards the type of extra-curriculars, art, sports, music that parents want for their kids. This causes parents to pull their "smart kids" out of the the public schools (because they can make it into Magnet Schools or private schools) leaving behind the "dumb kids" which pushes the school further down the scale causing it's closure.
This Bureacratic nonsense is KILLING the public school system. If they keep focusing on what FACTS, what SNIPPETS kids know instead of their problem solving skills and ability to think on their feet THEY ARE going to kill it.
Put's away soap box -heh...sorry about that.

I had to take the WASL this last week, i was dreading the essay part cause i suck at essays BUT during the reading part i was surprised that they put questions on there for people who are beyond stupid, but yeah it was REALY easy once you got it out of your system. Now i am waiting for the math/science part which i don't have to pass the science part to graduate but i got to pass everything else. razz but thats next month so we'll wait and see for it.

That sounds like my school. The WASL is taken at a month apart. I think it's to lessen the stress of it all.
I like the Mondays and Fridays because the guy I like has my lunch so I get to ogle him from across the commons.

Waste of time, all of it. gonk I finished it with so much time to spare, it wasn't even funny. And I don't do anything half-assed, either. Science is going to be a breeze, like the rest. Math may present a mild challenge, nothing more. I just wish it wasn't a graduation requirement. mad

I live in Bellevue. We have to take it in two weeks. Read my latest journal entry. It shows how much bullshit the test is in my eyes.

The reading is always stupidly easy. John walked down the street to the store. 1. Where did John walk to? A. The Store. B. His house. C. The Bus stop. D. Canada.
