When she ran to get the first aid kit, he squeezed harder around the small creature's fuzzy body. Butch cheered him on.

He handed it over. "I think it got stuck somewhere." It wouldn't stop its plaintive squeaking.

"Oh honey, let me see you, no it's okay shhh, I got you," she carefully carried it over to a table, gently keeping it still to avoid further injury. The kits were simple and easy enough to use, provided melting had not set in. The cases were tightly sealed FEAR-rich units made to store items from the other world, and they all held only two items: a poultice and a bandage.

"Now where does it hurt?" She asked the creature, frowning when she lightly grazed it with her fingers and the resulting cries indicated everywhere.

"Check its cage," she called out the order, forgetting that this was Jan and that she considered him all but useless anywhere outside a bedroom. "Maybe something's broken."

He watched her tending to the tiny creature with an air of voyeurism until he was finally ordered over to the cage. He obediently did so and looked in. "I dunno what it could have been. Sometimes little animals just get injured I think."

"Oh wait, its got another one in here." Another treat tentatively wobbled forward and this one too suffered the same ruthless fate as its companion. He held it up, still wriggling and squeaking. "Maybe they were fighting." he said.

America traded out the sturdy gloves for odd medical ones that briefly flared with runes when they were put on. Dipping several fingers a jar, she scooped up a thick muddy-looking paste and began gently slathering it over the treat. It tried to thrash under the touch as first, but then settled into deep, pained breathing. When she glanced over at Jan, she rolled her eyes yet again, "Well don't just stand there, and hold it proper Mister I understand their thoughts."

She didn't bother with the bandages, instead just settling the first treat into a special care tank and giving it an extra candy to speed its recovery along. "Do you think you can handle that one or are you as good at this as you are just about everything else?"

"I'm not a vet missy." he said coolly. "And this isn't saying much that's coherent or thinking it." the squeaking was starting to irritate him and he simply wanted to dispatch the annoying little creature. He eyed it coldly, not moving to hand it over or tend its wounds. "What happens when they die?"

PostPosted: Tue Feb 25, 2014 5:39 am

She frowned at him and placed gloved hands on the minipet to take it from him. "The only dead ones I've seen were melted goo," the frown deepened, "...seems like an ugly way to die. I guess they get killed in certain experiments too, but I've never been around for those." Nor did she intend to be. It was less the idea of them dying that bothered her, dead was dead, but more the way they must suffer in the lead up to it. "If you aren't gonna be useful here, then give it to me. Go back to feeding things and not bothering to do a decent job of cleaning the cages."

He let it go with a strange, robotic reluctance, as if his hand had a delayed response to the rest of him. "Melted? Well that's pretty goshdarn awful." he said with a shake of his head. "But awright, I'll go back to feeding them. You can play nurse." he gave her a wink.

Turning back to the minipets, he only paid half attention to feeding them, instead taking every opportunity to watch her slyly. "I didn't think Sun division would be able to heal things, colour me impressed."

He still found himself slightly jarred with the elation he got from harming the small creatures. It made him aware of the fact that he should feel bad. He should feel guilt. The awareness that he did not made him feel divine and empowered. It was a thrill of superiority and he remembered why it had been so hard to train that predisposition out of himself back in Florida. Anything that made him aware of the void danced the line of making him angry or making him happy, or some numb approximation of both.

"I'm not so good with things that aren't real animals."

"Well that's mighty narrow-minded of you to use divisions as way to define a person's capabilities," she sniffed, carefully covering the second with the paste. "Not that I expect better." America left her verbal jabs at that, instead choosing to focus on the creature, talking low and soothingly to it as she worked. When it became obvious that it was determined to lick at the substance, she sighed and reached into a drawer, pulling out a little plastic cone to snap around its neck before placing it in another care tank with a candy. The thing was was a pathetic sight as it stared out at her, and America couldn't help but smile as she stripped off the gloves and tossed them.

The kit was left where it was for the time being, just in case. "Hard to imagine you being very good with real ones either," she wrinkled her nose at the man while she got back to the task of feeding and cleaning. "Animals usually have a good sense of character."

"We should send out a search party. Missing, one sense of humour, please call and ask for America. Dearly missed by her peers." he said. "Because that was a joke pardner. I still don't even know what Death are meant to do. Short of read a lot and get sent on very dangerous missions."

"They do have a good sense of character, it's why they love me so much. They see me and they know I'm a true friend of nature." As he said this, he reached down into a tank with a number of grumpkins bouncing around playfully. They were much smaller.

Impassively, he reached down and squeezed with as much force as he could muster without summoning Butch, there wasn't even a crunch. He tossed the lifeless thing aside and watched it begin to melt as its peers scrabbled fearfully at the sides of the tank. He went on to dispatch the other three in various ways, snapping one's neck, strangling another, all without even changing his expression or missing a beat of his conversation. "I used to have eighteen cats you know, many of whom were gifted to me when their forever caregiver couldn't look after them any longer."

"Must've gone in search for someone actually funny," America countered his sass with barely a pause as she worked. "Death does seem pretty dire, all told, but with a name like that, you can't say there isn't truth in the advertising."

She made a face at several doll pets, sitting still and perfect with their creepy stares. Picking a light haired one from the cage she held it up to Jan's figure across the room for comparison. "So much for forever caregivers."

She paused and squinted at his back, "Something wrong with the tank?"

"It's pretty dire." he said. "Between watching someone nailed to a wall with daggers during a meeting to being sent to the Sahara which reads like a murder zone I feel like its where they send outlaws they want rid of. I was even speaking to some people about it and they concur." Of course, he had no intention of dying out there, he had no death wish.

"Age came for them, it wasn't their fault. They made sure the cats were well looked after, it's more than most people do." he shrugged, eyeing the tiny creatures. "I think so, I'm not sure this is what these creatures are meant to look like. They won't move when I poke them either."

PostPosted: Wed Feb 26, 2014 5:02 am

Her lips compressed as he talked about the Sahara. The last time they'd discussed it she was delighting in his ill fortune, gloated over it, offering hot little whispers of what terrible things awaited and how much she'd enjoy never seeing him again just as much as the acts he performed with such focus and skill. That was then. But now it was almost a month away and Taym was set on going despite whatever words she or anybody else had to offer. The girl couldn't bring herself to answer further on the topic, her posture becoming visibly unhappy, quiet distress reading in her every line.

Grim-faced, she made her way over to peer inside the tank for herself and then sighed, "Yeah they're gone. One of us'll have to go over to the other world some time this week and fetch some replacements." She was considerably less concerned with the dead rather than the merely injured.

He watched her carefully as he spoke, intrigued by the very different response his comments on the place elicited and the change in mood it seemed to wreak on her. He also noted once again that odd indifference to death that the woman displayed, logically most individuals responded to pain and hurt with sympathy but death with deep and open grievance. It was not the case with America and that was a rare and fascinating trait and he allowed himself a theoretical imagining of a world where he could keep her and she would be indifferent to the things he did other than the steady and invigorating hate she displayed towards him.

"I've never been over there, I'm not too keen on golems." he said with a shrug. "Wearing another body. I wouldn't begin to know how to do it either."

He edged over a little nearer to her, clearly deciding not to let a good conversation thread go. "But about the sahara. How is your friend coping with losing weight for the mission?"

PostPosted: Wed Feb 26, 2014 2:34 pm

"Every other time you open your mouth it's to explain how useless you're determined to be," America murmured as she put on another set of gloves to pick up the melted remains and place them in special baggies. "I'll do it, haven't had a chance to go over there yet, myself, but at least I'm willing to try new things for the sake of being a professional." She gave him a flat, pointed look and startled slightly to noticed that he'd gotten so close.

"He's fine," the girl snapped, a sudden flush rising high on her cheeks. "It's just another job for him. Doesn't need to ******** cope at all, the only ones with any coping to do are his friends."

"I could come with you. We could learn together." he said gently. "Or you could berate me for every little mistake I made, I know that would be an enjoyable twist for you."

He found the idea of having friends interested in whether he lived or died novel. He'd had some, he must have, but he'd never kept them long. People that were committed enough for that were generally prime for the harvest. Of course, no one here did other than perhaps Jerry, but that was fine. The fact she'd mentioned coping at all in relation to it was of marked curiosity too.

He didn't get out of her personal space, comfortable, as always feeling like his shorter stature made him unthreatening and gave him a free pass to be there. He didn't loom, somehow it made it worse. "You don't want him to go." he said, and it wasn't a question.
