Her own eyes faltered at the feel of his rough skin, and how tightly he had bound his fingers. The circulation had probably been completely cut off on the ends.
She placed his palm on hers, and the other lay atop, rubbing gently, transferring warmth.
She had absolotuely no idea what she was doing. It was as though her body were working completely independent from her mind.

His expression turned confused behind the grin.
"...Why are you doing this?" His tail flicked feebly. "...I've come to the general conclusion that you rather dislike me."
His hand twitched.

Her head moved up once more. Her head was getting a little light.
Emerwyn didn't know just how to answer. Perhaps honesty would be most sufficient.
"I... don't know."
She held on to him still.
"I just... want to understand."

"Understand...what?"
The Cat stepped about an inch closer, eyes narrowing. But it was bravado - that much was easy to see.
The fight in him was dying away right now. The Jabberwock was destroying it.

His closing in made her throat block up a bit.
"I want to understand... perhaps not understand, no. But, I want to know Julian. And - I want to know why I couldn't help him. And why I couldn't give him what he wanted."
She kept her eyes set, but they were glazing over, the tears desolving her haze.

"...Difficult questions to answer...."
His voice softened a bit. "I ask myself the same. But the Jabberwock...he is doing everything he can to drown Julian out. And Julian is...in pain. He just needs...."
A pause.
"...A friend, first and foremost. And he doesn't think of me as a friend anymore."

Why did Emerwyn feel guilt for this? For helping turn Julian away from the Cat? That was her intention. Was Cheshire manipulating her?
"A friend?" Emerwyn smiled grimly. "I don't deserve to be his friend.
...but, I'd do anything to help him."

"...Then help him."
He blinked slowly, sinking back into a sitting position on the wood, hand still in hers.
"...I can't seem to."

She moved down with him, entranced by him, holding his hand still. It reminded her of the time she was with Julian, holding his hand to keep him with her. And now she was trying to bring him back...
The tears had stopped, and the clouds moved in. Her eyes didn't see Cheshire; they didn't even see Julian. They saw past all of that.
She leaned forward, slowly.
There was no passion, no lust. There was no conscious descision. There was no lie.
There was only a pure, simple love from one friend to the other. Emerwyn didn't know if what she'd just done would help, or hurt. Emerwyn didn't know how the Cheshire Cat would react.
The only thought in her mind was the expression of a feeling in its purest form. It was up to him to understand.

The Cat froze - his grin disappeared. His hands tightened, his eyes shut...and a wave of ice swept through him.
There was a twitch that ran through his shoulders. He stopped moving - he stopped breathing.
...Then slowly...his free hand slipped up to rest upon her back.

Her eyes opened slowly as his body change. She felt his hand on her back, and she didn't know how to react at first. For a moment, she remained on his lips, lingering as the life crept back into him.
Then, she released him slowly. "Hello Julian."

It was Julian - but he looked weak and tired. He looked at Emerwyn through half-lidded eyes, speaking in a sleepy tone.
"...Emerwyn...?"
His hand remained on her back, the taped fingers trying to hold on.

He wasn't completely coherent. She waited, not moving his arm, but instead bringing one of hers to hold it gently.
"Yes. Yes, I'm here." Her voice was soothing. She was going to be the friend she had failed to be before.

"...I thought I'd...maybe...never see you again...."
His voice turned a bit hoarse, and he coughed. It was all in his mind...and that gaping wound in his chest wasn't ACTUALLY there. His wrists didn't have bruises from the chains around them.
At least, anyone who looked would see that. Julian wouldn't.

Emerwyn smiled. "It's all right. None of that matters now. I'm back..."
I'm back...
I'm back.
The realization would take a while to sink in, but it was true. Emerwyn had regained her sense of self... for the most part.
