She smiled at him. He was being awfully sweet.
When I talk...it uses my magic...which uses my blood. The stronger the magic the more blood gets used. I don't want to accidentally say something and to have it happen. It could hurt whatever or whomever I'm around...and it will more than likely hurt me. But I could try to talk to you, if you wanted. If you're already dead...I guess I can't hurt you...

Lazarus looked at her then towards the blood lake. "Although if you did speak you might have to do it away from that if you can't control your powers in that aspect. This lake has been here for a long time and it's fairly special. It carries the souls of the dead in it as well. For those who can't pass into the afterlife, some of them end up in here...or so I was told." Lazarus then got up. "However, I won't force you to talk if you don't want to."
He then glanced down at the blood lake before looking back to her. "I just hope that if I can ever die that I won't end up in there." He stretched out a bit. "So want to see other sites in Nightmare valley? I'm sure there must be something more interesting and I've been around this area my whole life so I haven't known too much. Normally I'm not the chatterbox or showing emotions type, but for some reason today seems different in a way."

I can and can't control it. The words I choose to use shouldn't have many double meanings. And I would need to be focused.
Cora closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
"If you want...to go somewhere different..." Her voice was raspy low, barely as loud as a whisper, "I am ok with doing so."
She looked around nervously, waiting for something to happen. When nothing did, she relaxed. Her hoof went to her throat. It was sore just from that sentence. She'd have to start carrying a water bottle around if she were going to keep talking.

"I see." Lazarus observed her then looked at the lake then back towards Cora. "Well that wasn't too bad, but I'm not gonna force you into talking like me." He got up and stretched a bit. "Anywhere in particular you enjoy?"

Cora nodded, her throat too unused to the act of talking to be used again for a while. Her tail started going in the dirt again, and she was thanking whatever divine creator there was for the barbed tip. It really did come in handy.
Sorry. My throat hurts too much to use it again. I'll have to ease into talking to you slowly.
I like to go and sit under the hanging trees. Sometimes that helps me think. And it's kinda fun to swing on the ropes there.

Lazarus nodded his head. "Alright, then lead the way. Truthfully I've been a boring mummy for most of my life. I was just watching souls pass into the afterlife just for kicks." He looked down a bit. "Not to mention most would not take time to get to know me or would say I'm boring." He paused. "However, I was willing eventually to be used as a servant for someone of great strength. Strength meaning of the heart of course."

She smiled and picked up an hoof full of dirt.
Cora started in the direction of the trees and waved him with her. Then she threw the dirt up into the air and concentrated on it. it started to form letters and words, what she wanted it to say. This way they wouldn't have to stop to scrawl every time she wanted to say something.
I hope it wasn't forced servitude. Those are nasty things. I mean, my mother took my father as a servant, but that was a mutually beneficial deal. And he could have left. Mom probably would have killed him, but he could have left.

Lazarus followed after her in sheer amusement. "Well it could of been forced. I never had to serve anyone yet, but I wouldn't mind doing so. In a way it proves that I'm needed even if it's for something small." He read the last part of Cora's writing. "Wow. That sounds harsh. I'm sure he must of really loved your mother in order not to leave." He was going to say or sheer fear of being killed, but he held his tongue since he didn't want to offend Cora. "Servitude can sometimes teach what other things cannot."

After the dirt displayed its message it fell neatly back into her hoof. She smiled at Lazarus, shaking her head. She tossed the dirt up into the air again.
Mom would have killed him because he would have broken her heart. Not for him leaving as her servant. They were, and still are, very devoted to one another. I'm not entirely sure how one lived without the other one.
Cora frowned and the dirt changed shapes in the air.
You should never have to be forced to serve someone. And I'm sure that you're needed, even if you don't think so. Who else am I going to practice talking on? I can't just go around spouting off sentences to anyone.
She smiled at the last part. She was still undecided as to whether or not she wanted to talk, but it wouldn't hurt to talk to him. She couldn't really hurt him, at least, she didn't think she could. And it wasn't like she wouldn't be careful.

Lazarus read the words Cora formed yet again. "Oh so that's how it went. I guess I can understand it then. I remember others mentioning about this before. They mentioned about a ponies being so devoted to each other to a point they considered passion." He cocked his head to the side trying to think up what that feeling could be like, but he had never felt it, or at least not yet.
Lazarus watched the dirt yet again before reading. "Needed?" At first he hesitated, but he read the last bit before chuckling a bit. "Perhaps so. Although, pardon me for thinking this, but it's a shame that no one else can understand you. Sometimes patience is needed with others as well."

Cora smiled at him. He was too sweet. Don't think that I don't get my point across. My family can understand me without the words or the scrawling. My expressions and actions serve me pretty well.
She shrugged, And I'd like to be able to communicate with others. But they don't have the patience. And I don't always have the patience to endure them.

Lazarus nodded his head. "Of course. I would hope your family could understand you, otherwise that would stink." He cocked his head to the side. "Really? I thought you seemed fairly patient to me. Most don't talk to me at first because I come across as not caring or aloof. Or at least that's what most say."

Cora wrinkled her nose up at him.
I didn't think that. You just looked like you needed a friend. And I wanted to communicate with someone. So it worked out well.
She turned in a different direction, they were entering the edge of a forest away from the lake.
Not too much further now. The hanging trees are in the middle of the forest. They're actually pretty neat despite the gruesome task they're used for.

A small smile crossed Lazarus' face. "Alright then."
He stared in wonder at the trees. "Um...I hate to ask, but what are the trees used for originally? I haven't been this way so I never really noticed or saw them before."

To hang others with, of course. That's why they're called the hanging trees.
Cora smiled brightly at Lazarus despite the horribleness of the trees' use.
They haven't been used for that purpose in years though. And I don't plan on hanging you. Wouldn't do me much good anyway.
