"It's a risk."
Jordan studied Ro, that quiet stillness settling over him again. After a moment, he said, "We're not them." He didn't take his hands out of his pockets yet. "That's not a safe thought. For a lot of reasons. You understand that."

"One I wonder if I made a mistake taking."
He still held Sylvia out towards Jordan, waiting to see what he would do. His shoulders moving only to shrug. "We aren't," he stated softly, "The dance he wanted, that I might want, I know it won't happen."
He spun the scythe over head leaving a gash in the ground holding her partially behind his back a hand reaching out towards Jordan. "So I'll settle for the old dance. We swing, we clash, we fight." He gestured for Jordan to move closer, to summon Ferros, "Please. I just want to forget about everything. Just for a little bit."

"That's something I don't think anyone can answer." Jordan watched Ro a moment longer, then moved into a fighting stance, feet apart and posture loosening, his right hand reaching out and closing on Ferros's haft as the hammer materialized in his hand. "I'm sorry," he said, and left the rest unspoken. Sorry that that had to hurt you; sorry that you're unhappy. Not for my choices, but that they have caused you pain, unavoidable as it was.

Ferros appeared, Jordan apologized, all Roland could do was close his eyes. "I'm sorry as well." For making things difficult, angering Rep, for having these feelings. Sylvia moved slowly forward around his back and into his hands again as he watched Jordan closely now.

Jordan sighed almost inaudibly. Things were awkward again. After New Year's, that had been inevitable, he supposed. Getting things clarified was the first step towards the awkwardness eventually fading, but it was going to take some time.

"I'm not going to go easy on you," Jordan warned. In spite of the statement, though, Ferros's arc was slow and almost lazy when they stepped in to swing. HP: 60/60 Dmg: 4 Charge: 1/3

"That's fine." Ferros came slow and steady, Roland moved in bringing Sylvia up, scythe meeting hammer, but the weight still causing his shield to flicker. Sylvia only had one thought to add, simply << Heavy... >>
Pushing the other hunters weapon back he followed through bringing Sylvia around hard and down into the dirt again followed by a mighty swing up Jordan's center.
"I won't either."

The bright, sharp slice of pain made Jordan stagger back, and he laughed. Maybe it was weird, since he carried a hammer himself, but when he got hit he preferred the precise, narrow slicing pain of a blade weapon or claws to the more diffuse, crunching power of a blunt impact. What did it say about him, that he was used to pain enough that he had preferences? It never hurt any less, but after a while, it had just stopped mattering. There were a lot of things worse than pain. He regained his balance and stepped in to swing again, staying back at the limit of Ferros's range. Facing off against another melee-range weapon meant a careful dance of judging distance and reach. HP: 51/60 Dmg: 5 Charge: 2/3

Roland didn't have a preference, well he did, but it wasn't quiet like Jordan had. He preferred the simple act of physical pain. Emotional pain lingered and gnawed and drove him to dispair. Physical pain was fleeting and quick, healed and gone leaving only scars in the worst case where the emotional pain, now that lingered forever and shaped the way you'd see the world painting it darker and darker shades.
Ferros swept in again, Roland could only turn this time his shoulder taking the bulk of the blow. Even as he turned inward with impact he was shifting Sylvia, taking a step forward he closed the space between them before stabbing at Jordan's stomach with the end of Sylvia's shaft.HP: 41 DMG: 5 Charge: 2/3

A spar was every bit as much a conversation as a spoken exchange. Neither of them was seriously trying to hurt the other, but neither was holding back. No distaste, and no disrespect. The butt of Sylvia's haft knocked the air out of Jordan for a moment, and he drew back to catch his balance and his breath before moving in again, deliberate and measured.
Ferros fed, and the sense of him bloomed with heat.

It was a dance they knew well, a dance that in other situation would mean life or death, it was a dance they did now in place of one in another time, a time where they where happier. A time when everyone was happier in the end. Now they had only fleeting memories of awkward dates and choices they could never have. Now they only had this dance here and now.
Ferros struck again and Roland spun with the blow, he carried the momentum around bring Sylvia across in a wide arch, her hooked blade biting at Jordan as she took in the last of her own charge, a faint hum in the air and a raging song in Roland's head.

There were a few memories from that other time and place that Jordan could have wished for, others that he didn't regret leaving behind; he had woken feeling ambivalent about the whole thing, wondering again which world was the reflection, or if both were equally valid. Maybe that other Jordan had woken from a dream of life in this world, given glimpses of what he could have had and what he could not. It didn't really matter. This was the life he lived, and what Ro felt was his own responsibility; Jordan could only do what he felt was right. He conferred briefly with Ferros, agreed with the dragon that Ro could handle this. Ferros burst into flame halfway through his arc, and struck solidly and hard. HP: 38 Dmg: 16 Charge: 3/3

Roland didn't dwell on what the other self might have known, had that world been real? Was it a dream or was it a reality else where? He didn't look at it that way, he saw it as a dream, a chance, something that was him but didn't happen, times hadn't lined up, events went out of order something went wrong and this time line happened over that one.
Roland could only frown slightly as Ferros burst into flames arching towards him halfway through the strike, Sylvia lashed out against the hammer catching the force of the blow but the flames, the flames still rolled over him causing him to hiss in pain as they bit at every inch of flesh.
Finally the blow passed and Roland was left with his opening, he didn't swing at Jordan, no instead he spun the scythe over head, dust and air gathering around the spinning weapon before he took a small hop and a wide swing. What happened next was a howling blast of noise and air from both weapon and hunter far higher then any voice Jordan had heard, the sound it's self opening hundreds of tiny cuts on both the hunters as the storm of noise ripped around them.HP: 6 DMG: 28 @ Jordan / 14 @ Self Charge: 0/3

The howling whirlwind that was Sylvia's charge tore at their shield, a voice made into a thousand tiny knives, and Jordan dug the spike on Ferros's barrel into the ground to help brace himself against the screaming wind. When it faded, he shook himself, eyeing the twisted shape of the scythe with new respect. Ferros rumbled crossly, wordlessly urging Jordan on. Their shield was getting critically low, and they doubted they'd have time for three more hits before they had to yield. Still, they weren't done quite yet. Jordan pulled Ferros free of the dirt and lunged in, aiming low, attempting to knock Ro's feet out from under him. HP: 10 Dmg: 2 Charge: 1/3

The music stopped, Sylvia was no longer singing, all her energy released in that one cry, that one strike that left both hunters weaker then before. Roland even smiled, ever so slightly, a small flicker at the corner of his lips.
Still it wasn't over, Ferros came in low causing Roland to lose the smile, frowning slightly as the weapon clipped his leg causing him to tumble. Ferros was heavy though, momentum would carry the swing onward and give him an opening once more. On his knees where he landed he lashed Sylvia out, her hooked blade returning the blow to the legs to put Jordan in the same position he had just forced Roland.
