The hand on his was a touch that sent a fire through his body and he immediately stopped his movements. This was hard on him. How was he suppose to work on a friendship she wanted when she wouldn't stop touching him all the time? They were in her bed too, for goodness sake!
"We can but you're making it very hard for me," he said with a laugh. "We're still in bed! It's giving me conflicting vibes here."
"Saying that in bed makes you sound like you want to be friends with benefits."
Did he sound hopeful? He might have sounded hopeful but was it over friends or the benefit?

"Ha ha," Zia laughed in an attempt to sound forced and not genuine.
As much as she would've loved to pick things up and just call it friends with benefits, experience taught her that didn't work. That's what this all started out as two years ago.
But she wasn't about to lose him on an emotional level. While she had cautiously pondered on the notion she may have feelings for someone else, in a weird way, her and Pascal were soul mates, but they weren't good for each other tied down in a romance. Not under any circumstances. Both of them came from a background that wasn't healthy and they only reinforced those unhealthy notions in each other, and while she had no idea about him, the war and its secrets had left her absolutely broken and separated from him on a level she couldn't recoup. She was going to do her best to stop him from slipping through her fingers again, though.
They didn't have to drop he positive aspects of each other's company with the negative.
"Friends... And after today, no benefits," She said, making a decisive motion with her hands.
"But... friends?" She asked, sounding equally hopeful as she twisted her hand around to knit her fingers with his and squeeze. "Please?

He might not have liked his options but he couldn't afford to lose Zia. Not right now. Not ever. His hands squeezed hers and his amber eyes fell upon her hazel with mixed emotions. He couldn't lose Zia but could he simply be her friend? Could he watch her run off with another man now? He didn't like the idea, and it had driven him mad. It didn't seem to work. She was convinced it couldn't be fixed and how was he to argue when he couldn't do anything but lie to her? He simply nodded his head to her, not having much of an option here.
"Then..." he said with a drawn out pause, his body moving back in closer to her. "We better make good use of today."
