He paused at the offer of a trade. There had been no question in his mind of getting a payment for the apples. There were hungry horses and his family had enough extra to help them, if only a little. It was simply the right thing to do. His father would have done it, there was no doubt in his mind of that. The words, 'Oh, no payment is necessary' nearly slipped out of his mouth before he caught himself. No, she had come from far, far away. Surely even if he intended to take nothing there were some interesting trinkets carried by their merchants. Surely she would not think poorly of him if he tagged along and took a look at their wares.
A nod, "Okay." He looked around, "We just need to figure out a way to carry them back with us then we can go and see what kind of payment you could offer." Just a look, he promised himself silently. They might need the trade goods somewhere down the path to barter with someone who was not as generous as he was. A smile crossed his face and he nodded to himself.
"Um," there was not really much of a choice. The few baskets his family owned had been stored away in the fall after their main purpose had been exhausted. This time of the year they would only be taken out to collect from a store similar to this one. It was a long march home. A basket was out of the question. "We could use my tabard. It is a bit thin but if we are careful we should be able to carry all the apples on it."
He twisted his head to tug at the light fabric draped over his back. It slid off easily enough. It was fortunate that he had been wearing it that day. It was usually stored in one of the baskets and he only snuck off with it if he knew that he intended to play knights alone in the forest. His brother would never live it down if he found out.
The fabric was lain out near the tree, then he set to work moving the apples over on to it one by one, trying his best not to get too much slobber on them. There was no doubt in his mind that the she would only bring out the best trinkets if he delivered only the best, least slobbery apples. They would have to each take an end to transport it, but as he'd said, the stiffer fabric at the edges would help keep the apples in when they lifted it. Not ideal, but if they were careful it would be sturdy enough for a short trip.

Nicoletta moved in to work beside him. Once she would have whimpered to have to perform even a minor task like this. She had been a bit spoiled as a foal, she had come to realize. Now, she still might not be quite as rugged as some of the other herd members, but she liked to think that she contributed equally. After all, here she was bringing back apples to share with everyone! That would certainly improve everyone's lives.
When the apples were all piled on the tabard, she leaned back a little to survey it. It looked a little precarious to her, but it was better than any solution she could have come up with on the spot. "It's good that the herd is so close," she mused. "I wouldn't want to try to carry this any long distance."
