"But...." Lin trailed off.

There were very few things that could happen in where Earendil could have been alive and more or less unhurt, while not being able to be with the rest of the traveling party.

She grimaced, "He's captured?"

Especially if they thought he was a local, that might not bode well for them.

Kyrie nodded grimly. "Yes. It looks like he went willingly, though. No signs of a struggle, no blood, nothing."

Wren frowned. "Then why would he go? If there was no threat ..."

"I think I know." Kyrie didn't look happy. "Lin, would he be the type of person to give himself up if it meant keeping the rest of us undiscovered?"

"Yes," she replied without hesitation.

It was an endearing quality of her husband when it didn't cause misunderstanding or worry.

"Especially if he thought it would just make things worse..."

And it would have if he fought back.

Kyrie nodded. "Then I'm sure that's what must have happened. I can't be certain, but I think I counted at least eight sets of other footprints. Soldiers. Armed and armoured. I really don't think we could have taken them on, not safely."

She sighed. "The best thing we can do is keep going. We won't get anywhere near him, not on our own."

Lin sighed as she rubbed the back of her head. She knew this to be true, it wasn't the first time that Earendil had gotten caught and unlike Amon Darthir, there was no way they could talk themselves out of it this time.

"Let's go then, the sooner we get there the sooner we get can help," Lin replied.

Miyuki's ears drooped at this, the thought of going on without her father... while she wasn't that needy little girl anymore the thought was just awful.

Lin saw this and forced a smile, "Cheer up, if things get bad, he can escape. I don't think your ada ever told you what his gift was did he?"

It was something not mentioned that often, like LIn's butterfly hearing.

Andarien didn't feel right either. He wanted nothing more than to snuggle with his mother, hear her reassure him and tell him that everything was fine ... but he was too big for that, and he knew it.

"What is it?" he asked quietly, trying to sound brave. His voice was shaking, though, and that was something he couldn't hide.

"He can make openings through walls," she told him fondly, "When your father and I were children we would play in the maze of the palace in the Southland. He would, sometimes make new entrances that would disappear after we entered and allowed him into the secret passageways."

She remembered those days fondly and Nina, not realizing that it was magic would always try to find those entrances again.

"And I thought he just made glowing things," Miyuki murmured having never seen that particular Gift.

Andarien was amazed, and for a moment he felt a glimmer of hope. "So wherever he goes, he can leave whenever he wants to?"

"I don't think he would do that," Kyrie said seriously. "Grab your things, we need to go."

Andarien let Ponydash out of his ball and tied his chest onto the Pokemon's back, but he was confused and troubled by Kyrie's remark. What did that mean?

"If he leaves now, they'll be a search for him," Lin admitted as she picked up her bag.

Miyuki re-called Ai and Yasu before picking up her own. She listened in as her mother explained the reasoning for their ada not using his Gift.

"Really that Gift would only be used if he absolutely had no other choice," Lin explained to Andarien, "It's just good to know he has it if worse comes to worse, but for now he'll stay and bide his time."

And Earendil had a lot of patience seeing as the last time this happened he was stuck in a cell far too small for him.

Andarien sighed. He didn't like it.

"I want him here with us," he said in a small voice.

"Swords on," Kyrie reminded him brusquely. "Come on. I want us gone from here now."

Wren and Lancaeriel joined them as Kyrie started to lead them off.

Lin took Andarien's hand and gave it a squeeze before following Andarien. She too, would prefer if Earendil were with them, but at the moment it just wasn't possible. It was, very rare that she was put into a situation like this, but she had been drilled in it as a child.

Sometimes the best course of action wasn't going to be the one you liked.

She just hoped they would get to where they were going soon.

They traveled all through the day without stopping except to eat, and when they stopped for the night Kyrie insisted on watching the entire night herself. She woke them again early the next day and once again, she pushed them for the entire day. She made no apologies for it but simply explained that she wanted to get them to safety as quickly as she could.

The sun was beginning to lower in the sky on the second evening when Kyrie put out her arm to halt them all.

"Wait here, behind the trees," she told them in a low tone. "I'll make sure it's safe."

She made sure they were fairly well hidden before she vanished into the trees.

It was a grueling pace, Lin couldn't remember a time if she had ever went for that kind of pace and for that long. Nor could she remember ever being on edge like this before.

Watching Kyrie vanished into the trees, she hoped that everything would turn out alright.

Dark as it was, Kyrie was not gone long before she returned.

"We're good," she told them quietly. "I hope none of you are claustrophobic."

Andarien's brow furrowed. "What's that mean?" he asked in confusion.

"Afraid of small places," Lancaeriel supplied. "I'm sure we'll be fine, Kyrie. We haven't much choice, at any rate."

Kyrie nodded. "At least we'll be able to sleep without any fear," she murmured. "Come on."

She beckoned for them to follow her and started off again. She led them through the trees to a large clearing with two cabins on opposite sides of it. In the middle was a small field or a large garden as well as a stone well with a small roof over it. Smoke was rising from the chimneys of both cabins, and, completely ignoring the closer cabin, Kyrie led them towards the farther one.

When they arrived, she knocked gently twice and opened the door without waiting.

"It's me," she said in a tongue that was very close to the Ancient Tongue, though her words were accented differently.

"Bring them in," a man's voice came from inside the cabin.

Kyrie held the door open and motioned for the others to go inside first. "Quickly," she murmured.

Lin quickly ushered the children inside, not sure what to expect once they went into the cabin.

The place looked pretty self sustaining, which was interesting since it wasn't too far away from the city. Then again, considering how dangerous things were, one probably didn't want to go too close to the city.
