Avani turned her head in thought. She thought about it for a moment, why she was unafrid of Sulu and she smiled as she thought of why she was unafraid of Oblivion.

"You didn't seem mad at me. I mean, if you wanted to hurt me, wouldn't you have done it in the barn?"

Avani smiled brightly, "The other Khehora said he would eat me, but I knew he wouldn't... even if he did eat one of Papa's sheron..."

Avani like how this Khehora ate. A little too clean, but at least she wasn't like the big black bird.

Avani smiled and said, "I live back at the farm with Mama and Papa. And I'm starting a garden so I can be as good as Papa is one day. Hopefully..."

Avani blushed a little and picked up a loosened feather that Sulu had shaken off. She played with it and said, "It's really nice here, though different then the last place we lived!"

"What about you Sulu? Do you live around here as well?"

That was true, though Suluksati saw no reason why she should hurt little Magescan orakoi in barns. Out hunting, perhaps, and only a little bit then to dissuade them. And even then, she'd rather convince them with words or, failing that, scary roars. Hurting children was a measure of absolute last resort.

She groomed any residual blood and meet scraps from her face fastidiously. "Well, that was very unkind of this khehora." she said. She couldn't remember if she had said that before - she was certain that the other khehora had been mentioned previously.

"You wish to be like your parents?" she murmured, "Admirable. Respecting your parents is good." And what had she done? Nothing of the sort. "So you are caring for... plants? Yes? And animals?" She blinked, "This is... not where you first lived?" Her tribe, back when she had bothered with family and tribe, had been static - living in one area. She knew of other tribes that moved around, and she herself had no one place to return to or call home. "I did not know that magescans were nomadic." she said, surprised. "I thought that with all the buildings and territories... land? And such, that they stayed in one place...?"

She stretched her wings thoughtfully, rearranging them on her back carefully, delaying her answer to the orderite's most recent question. "Well... I used to live north of here. Now I wander." she said cautiously - not because of any harm the information could do, but because, well, thinking of her family hurt a bit. A lot.

Avani waved her hand and the thought of Oblivion an unkind khehora away, "He was just being a big turkey." she said smiling, "He did some very kind things for me after that, so it was just a rough start." She remembered the trip to Ayr and the rescue of Kin, "Under all of that bluster, he was a kind person after all."

"Yup!" Avani said beaming and rocking back on her heals, "I love making things grow and live! You gotta do both with plants and animals." she said smiling brightly. She clasped her hands behind her back and said, "My grandmama and grandpapa taught all they knew to my papa and uncle. And now, my papa is teaching all he knows to me."

Avani blushed and sort of smiled and said, "Nope! I was born on the farm my grandparents started, and my uncle took over. When my granny died, my papa wanted land of his own, so he bought the land we farm now, and we moved here." She looked at the feather she had picked up again and remembered that farm. "My uncle farms my granny's farm now, and my cousin loves the land there, so I know it's in good hands."

"So you were born in Serenia too?" Avani said excitedly, "I'm glad!" Avani thought a moment and said, "If you wander, then you can always come here for rest." Avani nodded, "You seem nice enough and won't eat the sheron without asking, so you can use this place as a home when you are near."

Avani closed her eyes, folded her arms, and nodded again in finality.

Sulu shrugged with her wings. Well, whatever the girl wanted to believe. She hadn't met this khehora that she knew of, but if he was scaring children and stealing their food then he couldn't be all that good.

“So you have territories, then. That expand.” That made sense, “And on these territories, you grow plants and animals for food.” it was nicer than hunting, definitely. “And you pass down knowledge of how to grow this food from generation to generation...” She murred, licking water from her feathers, “I think this is a system that can be appreciated...”

She bowed her head. “I am most grateful for your offer.” she said, “And I may perhaps take you up on it. I feel as though I must offer something in return, though...” she rumbled thoughtfully, seriously. “Mmm... If you ever need help that one such as I can provide...” she said, finally, “You need only ask. It is only fair, an offer for an offer.”

Avani smiled as the big khehora replied about the farm and Avani's farm life. "We try to give back to the land too since we take much from it." Avani remembered not just her father's teachings on the subject of giving back, but her grandmother's as well, "It's a smelly job, but we try to make our own fertilizer too..." she didn't know if the khehora knew what that was so she said, "That's food we give to plants to make them grow better."

Avani smiled and held up the feather she had picked up earlier, "It's all right! You're nice, so I don't mind giving you some help." She gave the khehora a hug, "Just take care of yourself, and feel free come and find me if you need food."

Avani looked around and thought she should come back after Sulu had left and clean up the place. She knew how nice and comfortable it felt to have a clean room and bed, so she could see how the big khehora would like a clean, er, "house".

“... You feed the plants so that they feed you.” How circular. Suluksati wasn't sure what fertilizer was, but she assumed that it was not edible by non-plants.

She preened at the comment that she was 'nice'. It was, after all, nice to be nice. Normally she was called 'insane' or 'annoying'. It was a welcome change.

“Thank you.” she said, “Er...” A thought occurred to her, and she felt she had to ask. “So you... intend to farm? Your whole life? No hunting dragons or such things?” She flicked her tongue out in annoyance at her own awkwardness.

Good job, Sulu she thought to herself sardonically, Excellent job at being subtle

Yup! I love to get into the dirt and help things grow!" Avani smiled, "And nope! I don't intend to hunt anything, but sometimes dragons and wild khehora can eat our animals so we have to chase them away." Avani looked down at the floor, "Though sometimes they do attack the people guarding the animals, and we can't help but defend ourselves." She shrugged and moved her foot around making patterns on the dirty floor. "I don't like killing things, but sometimes we have to in order to live ourselves." Avani thought for a moment and said, "But then, don't they have to kill to protect their lives as well?" Avani shrugged and then looked up smiling, "But we usually just chase them away if they decide to show up when people are around. Papa won't have any unnecessary killing on his farm, that's for sure. And I don't ether when I grow up!"

Avani remembered a former farmhand that purposely went and hunted down a Baowi just because he saw it. She had never seen her father so angry before. Needless to say Avani had never seen that farmhand again.

"Anyway," she said shyly, "It's mostly why I brought you here. A bunch of the farmhands wouldn't like a khehora anywhere near a farm and could hurt you." She smiled, "But I figured if you were here to cause trouble you wouldn't be sleeping next to a sheron."

Suluksati let out a satisfied purr, tension leaving her body. “No hunting. That's good.” she said, relaxing, “That's very good.”

Self-defense was fine with Suluksati: after all, if it was not, she herself would be guilty of the very sin she fought. And dead, many times over.

“I can appreciate someone with such a policy” she said, stretching, “This world is so full of unnecessary death... would that more thought like you and your father.” Her voice was longing. It would make her life so much easier if the Magescians – and her own kind – did not seek out the deaths of more than prey, or of creatures that had no meat to give – like dragons – without cause.

She nodded, understanding the rationale. “I am not a theif.” she proclaimed, “I know enough to know that the sheron were not mine. I would rather go hungry than take what is not mine.” and she often did. “Many of my kind, and others that eat meat, do not make that distinction, however.” her crest flattened in embarassment, “And it wasn't next to me when I fell asleep.” of that, she was sure... she would have noticed.

“Mmm. But I think I would like to meet this father of yours, if he is so similar to yourself.” she commented, thoughtful. “Perhaps some time when I'm here next, if he is not available now.”

"That's just Mama's sheron." Avani said giggling, "She gets loose sometimes and wonders around the barn." Avani scrunched up her face, "Luckily she was in the barn this time."

There had been times Avani had to go searching for the beast, or had found it eating the flowers mama planted around the base of the house.

Avani thought for a moment about her father meeting Sulu. He probably would be afraid she was going to hurt Avani. But papa was int he fields today and would be till almost dark.

"Sorry," Avani said shaking her head, "Papa's out in the fields today and won't be back till it's almost dark." She smiled a bit, "But I wouldn't mind introducing you to him when he isn't off at work and you are here!"

Perhaps, Avani thought, one day there could be some tolerance of kind khehora who lived around here. Avani shuffled her feet in the dirt. It would take a long time, but it would be worth it if they could get along.

End it soon?

“Ah, well.” said Suluksati, somewhat disappointed, “Perhaps I will meet him at another time, then.” she said, inadvertently promising that she might well return. “As I will likely no longer be a burden to you before nightfall... I...” she looked reluctantly at the comfortable hut, the food, the pleasant young lady... “Must continue to patrol.” She sighed, giving in to desires that cried at the edge of her conciousness, desires not in tune with her usual ascetic lifestyle. “...But I shall be here for a few hours more, at least.” she relented, stretching and coiling into a comfortable resting pose, her stomach warming her into a pleasant haze.
