We watched her, his eyes sharp and gave a since of intelligence, regardless of his lack of hygiene or apparent apathy. He wasn't bored, or uninterested, just wholly unequipped to deal with social situations. Hardly anyone gave him the time of day. Most ran thinking he was a skinwalker, and those who didn't couldn't stand to be around him.
What value could he truly hold to anyone?
All these thoughts in his mind, but he was horrible at trying to articulate things. "I don't have any friends," he said finally. His voice was stoic, but there wasn't flash in his eyes - one of pain and loneliness.
The silence was awkward and tangible, and he knew this was becoming a wholly one-sided conversation. Being that this mare wasn't running away in terror, he knew he should try to keep her around, at least for a song.
"What about you?" he asked. His tone of monotone, but he seemed to be giving an effort at least.

A look of disbelief crossed Lykke's face. "No friends? How could you have no friends? Not even any squirrel friends?" She went off on a little tanget then, getting distracted by how one could become friends with a squirrel. "I mean, sure, they might be scared of...." She paused to look him up and down "Your size." She leaned in closer as if muttering a little secret he had been unaware of. "You are quite large." Then went back to her regular stance. "You could collect a bunch of acorns and make a ring of them around you and lay down. They may not trust you at first. But maybe if you did it for a few weeks, they might start to trust you? .......Though, that is a lot of work for just a squirrel."
"When I lived with my sister in the school for orphans she had made, she often taught us that you shouldn't judge someone before you know them. You should always be prepared to run if they are dangerous, but you shouldn't just assume someone is dangerous by just the way you look." She gave a little sigh. "And as much as I dislike her right now, I guess I can't forget what I learned there." She paused, lost in thought of her time at the orphanage.
Once she realized she had drifted off into thought and had left the large stallion hanging on her words, she coughed, embarrassed. She quickly started talking again, hoping he wasn't mad for her silence. "There was a boy there actually who said he had a rock for a friend. He was a little silly." A little smile crossed her face as she remembered the colt. "Though, I suppose its not so different from having a squirrel as a friend. But at least squirrels have body language." She smiled up at the large stallion, not even realizing she hadn't even answered his question if she had friends.
