"Fair enough," Jordan said. "I won't pick at your phobias deliberately, at least." He patted Melvin's back lightly as he was hugged, feeling a little awkward. "I get the defensive fighting back, man, I really do."

The hug continued, past the point of just being a standard hug. You were going to feel his friendship, Jordan. Feel it with the rainbow intensity of a million unicorns.
"Thank you." He whispered.

Awkward. Definitely awkward. Jordan patted Melvin's back again, then asked, "So what have you been researching?"

He continued hugging, somewhat hopping that not only would it strengthen their friendship, but that Jordan's kindness might transfer in small quantities via hug transfer. At the mention of research, he just gave a long hum. "Artifacts." He said, not wanting to bore people with the details.
"You don't use the same shampoo that Rep does?" He asked back.
Still hugging.

"What kind of - um ... no, I don't, he uses way too much." Jordan didn't want to pull away, because Melvin seemed to be in an emotionally vulnerable mindset, but his attempt at redirecting had failed to get Melvin to let go of him. "I didn't know you talked about, um, hair products." A common interest, apparently.

At long last, he pulled away. "We don't. I figured it out when he was unconscious." Of course, what he failed to mention that this was around when he and Rep first met, and they had gotten shot past the point most people quit during Jenga.
Instead of saying that, he just smiled.

Jordan's eyebrows arched. "When was that?" It sounded weird, but he was sure there was some kind of reasonable explanation.

Melvin moved to his chair and started to move it up in front of Jordan. It would have bee inconsiderate of him to have Jordan talk from so far away, and he wanted to be nice to his friend.
"Oh, when we full of drugs." He informed him casually as he settled into his seat, his knees only a foot away from Jordan's because it was nice to be close to your friends. Now Jordan didn't have to yell, and Melvin could still be quiet and whisper.

"Full of drugs," Jordan repeated, eyeing Melvin a little oddly. "Okay, then. Um. Was this a lab thing?" He sat up, reaching for his drink as an excuse to not be quite so up close and personal with Melvin's unusually-tiny personal bubble.

He wagged a finger at him."You are getting close. It was Jenga." Melvin responded. "About the time I first met Rep. We went and trained together. Did a few courses actually. Kinda miss that." He pointed out, wishing he could do more training with the red-head, but now it just seemed like they could just hang out instead without the need for dangerous courses to bring them together.
Melvin then just stared at Jordan not saying a word.

The set of Jordan's shoulders relaxed very slightly. That explained it. It still didn't explain why exactly Melvin had figured out what Rep's hair smelled like, but the sedative in the Jenga darts was a powerful one, and repeated doses could make you feel really, really weird. "It's been a while since I did a course," he said. "Which ones do you like to do?"

"Oh, I don't like any of them. I just miss doing them. It meant I forced people to be with me and they could do the fighting I couldn't. I sucked at firing Saliva back then, and I don't think I've improved much now. I don't like needless fighting and pain when I can avoid it. Thinking back on it, I never did make it past the tower yet. Did a lot of the others through. I was sorta gun-ho on wanting to clear all of them in order to show I could, but work and other things got in the way." He vaguely rolled his hand in the air as if the collection of his distractions and problems were a ball of smoke floating beside his chair.
"I also wanted all of the runic tools access since I wanted to have all the medic gear I could get on missions."
"What training courses do YOU like?" He said, his voice almost scripted. See, Jordan. He could do conversations the proper way even if he could care less about this sort of idle chatter that probably had little informational benefit. Still, it was going well and he was sure it would make Jordan feel better to ask. Even better, their task wasn't going badly. No one jumped out of window yet. Yay!

"Good thing you're not a Sun, then," Jordan said lightly. "You've got much better chances of avoiding unnecessary combat."
"I like the shadow run for stress relief. Straightforward, simple destruction. Moon course is my least favorite. I don't enjoy having to watch from a point where I can't do anything about it directly," he explained.

He set a hand on Jordan's knee. "But I appreciate that the Suns do have to go into unnecessary combat. I worry about you guys all the time. It's why I want to be a better Lifer. I'm not a good fighter, and I want to keep the ones that are going to keep the rest of us alive still going. There are a lot of missions still that I don't think you guys should have ever been thrown into, and I noticed that whenever we are thrown into a mission on the fly, there are a lot more Sun coats poking out of the ashes than others." Mainly because they were usually the first thrown out to fight. Sometimes he wondered if the Leads felt Suns were just canon fodder.
He removed his hand to sit back again. "You sound like you like to control directly. I like controlling directly too, but as for Shadow Run, I don't do well with just kill everything and hope you live. I guess I wasn't built to be an adrenaline junkie like most people on the island. Makes me wonder why they even woke me up."

Jordan tensed a little at the touch, looked at the hand, but didn't remove it immediately. "I appreciate the backup, seriously," he said. "Suns have a shorter life expectancy, so anything that helps is good."
When Melvin took his hand back, Jordan relaxed again. "Yeah, I'd rather have a hand in the situation than sit back and watch, at least when it comes to fighting. It's advantageous to have people who won't dive straight in, though. There's a lot more to our jobs than just combat." He nodded to Melvin.
