He stumbled onto the next step, just to get it over with.
And with a decided, horrific crunch, it was over. The floor, full of spike plates, merged with the ceiling (more of the same), and the mashed-up tarry leavings of bones and blood pooled onto the course.
There was a weak, "I'm okay," from back near the start, as another Harrison put his hands on his knees and shook the feeling of death off.
"You can do it. Not far now. You...you want to quit after you get five, just come back on the tiles you already stepped on." It was hard to ward off the phantom sting of overwhelming pain. But this body was okay. He was okay. Rep was still a b*****d. Status Step: 4HP: 0 Flags: 0/1 Instinctive moves: 0/1

It was definitely a bad idea. Definitely. She couldn't stop staring at the awful mess which had previously just been walking around. It took her right back, pulled her out of herself, took him back to Wonder Park to the death all around him. Not that the death bothered him, but any one of the dead could have been him. He was too young to die. If he had a phobia, it was death.
Shaking her head she looked around, relieved that Harrison was back again. "That was awful." she said, her voice a little shaken. "And okay."
She wasn't sure if she could remember the tiles she'd stepped on.
She walked forward this time and it was without the casual confidence she'd displayed moments before, second guessing her own instincts.
She found herself with an arrow twanging, newly fired in her shoulder, enough to send her to her knees with a yelp of agony. But rather than screaming and crying as was probably in character for this persona, Lawr stood up again, grim and resolute. It wasn't fatal.

Harrison sat down against the wall.
Chantelle's lucky streak ran out, and she got an arrow for the trouble. "You still got your flag," he reminded her.
He didn't get more chatty than that though, letting her concentrate.

She lifted a foot to place it on the next tile, her vision a wavering haze of pain.
And then she stopped.
No, the other one. She put her foot down and there was a click but nothing happened.

She couldn't remember the way back, so she just had to hazard figuring the path out on her own.

She must have a really good memory, she thought as she took yet another erratic step.
And found herself suddenly impaled on a spike through her chest.
She woke with a cry of pain, surprise and upset in the pod. Worst training course ever.

Harrison gave her a thumbs up, grabbing a flag and calling to the observatory.
"Gonna do one more run, then I'll take you to get your runic license filled out."

And right into a whirling grid of buzzsaws.
The mess went everywhere.
Harrison opened his pod, wiping the sweat off his face and grateful to still have limbs. He gave Chantelle a shaky smile.

It took Chantelle a while to recover when she got out of the pod, she was still sitting when Harrison got back from his awful disaster of a training run. "Awful." she said, pressing a hand to her chest. "It never becomes tolerable at all. Never."
He kept thinking about falling into that acidic water, feeling death overtaking him. It was awful.
She frowned deeply. "I wish I like, could just go home sometimes. I'm not cut out for this danger and death thing."

"Yeah, but there's perks. You just gotta be strong, is all. Do whatever you can to get an advantage, so when stakes are high, you're ready for it."
He offered her a hand up, even though he was still on the unsteady side himself.
"I'm not a big fan of danger or dying either. It would help if the pay was better."
But he had a plan. Eventually.
"You did good out there. You and your weapon got good instincts. They got a name?"

"I really don't like it, I'm not cut out for it and I'd like, love to get out." she took the offered hand and stood. "You know I like, dreamed at new year that I was home again? That none of this had happened. And I was like, so happy. I just need to deal with it though yeah. I'll need to try and be strong, I don't like taking advantage of things or people or fighting though."
"I call her Malificent!" she replied, still trying to rub the pain away from her chest. "She is pretty good isn't she?"
he said sadly.
