Shiloh could read, he just preferred not to. A wistful look was given in Ian’s direction, Shiloh usually pretty good at conning Ian into reading things to him, which was far preferable to stringing things together himself.
That said, since his life had come to rely quite literally on mission reports, he’d become rather familiar with skimming the important parts, lest he lose a hand or head. He ran through it quickly, noting the major players, locations and any other important information. He’d not heard of any of them or the park itself, and he had to wonder how such a thing was even allowed. It looked like a bad idea on principle alone, and it seemed they got the trouble they were asking for. Shiloh flipped a page, and tried to muster up any sort of excitement over the prospect of a Jurassic Park adventure but it was difficult - the last time he'd face off against otherworldly creatures, he'd gotten eaten.
He looked up when Chel asked about any sort of plan, a bit surprised at her glib way of talking to the doctor. Closing the folder, he straightened a little in his seat, and carefully glanced in H’s direction. A simple scouting job would be nice.

"It is indeed a scouting mission," the doctor drawled, ignoring Chell entirely. "The island you're visiting still has it's security up, which keeps the contents in but," he smiled, "also keeps us form easily entering. A boat will drop you pick you up in a nearby coastal town and drop you off, it'll be back the next day to take you back, as your pendants will not be functional. You're to find their security building and survey its contents, and, if you're more capable that I'm readily willing to believe, find their labs and gather any data available."
He picked up a pen and slid several pieces out of paper to sit in front of him, the meeting apparently over, "Your mission begins tomorrow at noon, take this time to review the information packets and prepare supplies for an overnight trip in hostile conditions."

Chel nodded, instantly relieved that the Doctor just explained their mission verbally. Things like being on time and being a good sport- those were things Chel could do. Reading and writing was a little bit more questionable. Passable, but not Deus Ex passable.
She picked up her things and gave a miniature, casual salute. "See you all at noon tomorrow!"
Less politely and not as loudly, Chel gently nudged Jack and said, "Mind helpin' me uh. Prepare. With some things. Like with this packet of info." Knowing full well that Jack was never going to do something for nothing, she added, "I'll run and grab your MREs for you ..."

Ian gave Shiloh a reassuring look, resisting the urge to pat his leg, and then nodded to the doctor. "We'll get our crap together and meet you all at noon tomorrow," said Ian cheerfully, and pushed himself to his feet, giving the rest a friendly wave.

He might or might not have let Chel squirm just a little just to be vindictive. "Yes, sir," Jack said with another nod as he got up and neatly tucked the folder under his arm.
Returning Ian's wave with a lazy one of his own, he then turned to Chel and considered her offer with a few taps of his finders against the papers. "Add coffee and you have a deal. I'll see you in the labs. Ian, Parish, you're welcome to form a study group with us."
(Joke was on her: he actually would have done this for free anyway, because nobody was going to mess up what was quickly being denoted in Jack's mind as his mission.)

Shiloh nodded towards the doctor, his folder tucked neatly beneath his arm as he stood, “Sir.”
Then he was following the others towards the door, relaxing a little only once he was through it. An overnight scouting mission seemed relatively tame but there was still a bit of tension that clung to his shoulders, they were scouting, he presumed, both humans and monsters and it was the human part that had him worried. A study group was probably a good idea.
“I’m in,” he said to Jack, before shooting a glance in Ian's direction.
Chel arrived right on the dot of 12 o clock. Not late, not early- neither were her style.
After her study session, in which she'd been completely embarrassed by Jack toying with her flaws, Chel had returned to her dorm. Sure she could've studied a little longer or maybe something productive, but instead she chose to flop on her bed and fall asleep instantly. She was a real go-getter, that one.
She arrived at the portals, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Unlike most of the other island denizens, Chel had a smile for everyone and everything. None of that morose pessimism here.
"So you guys ready?" she asked, looking to the others. "Gotta go take down uh ... I mean scout. Gotta go scout and stuff."

This time Jack did not have coffee, which was saying something--the guy was addicted to it the same way some people took to cigarettes or alcohol. But he needed his nerves to be perfectly in control for this.
Chel was given a look that said, What do you think? He'd been the know it all in the group, flipping between being factual and just being a general d**k about details. "Maybe we'll make it out without you exploding," he said with a snicker as they reported in.

The portals opened up into a small hut that reaked of fish and sea. Outside a boat awaited them at the dock, an old man gesturing for them to hurry at its helm. "One day," he rasped as they boarded. "Tomorrow, I will be back." He was silent for the journey, and when they were dropped off and hour later, he simply repeated the same, eyes fearfully shifting to the island and then quickly away.
The docks were in disrepair, and though the main roads were still clear enough to walk through, there was a great deal over growth creeping in and fallen trees littered their length. The roofs of distant buildings could be seen peeking above the jungle canopy. No signs offered any direction.
In the distance, there was a loud, bestial cry and for several minutes after, everything remained still and quiet. Gradually the small sounds of life began to fill the island once again.
The first objective given was to find and secure a basecamp.

Nabbing a set of runic bandages on the way out along with offered supplies, he stepped into the portal first. Jack's nose wrinkled at the smell of fish and even moreso at the old man, suspicious of anyone without an official coat, mission or not. Still, he couldn't help but feel a small thrill as the island came into view. It was not technically a legacy of his, but the whispers of that alternate world still clung to him in this regard: he could have been Cecil Moore's apprentice of a sorts. That alone was enough to fuel his desire to see every inch of this island while they could, dangerous or not.
Jack gave a low whistle as the old man rowed away, surveying the land before them with admiration. "And so the camping trip begins. You ready back there?"

[ haha posted on a mule for another shop ^ sorry about that! ]
Chel had spent the majority of the ride trying to hide the fact that she was slightly terrified of being surrounded by open water. She'd grown up very much a landweller, only having visited the ocean for beach days, and never really experiencing a real boat ride in water that wasn't shallow enough to stand in. So she kind of awkwardly clung to Jack's arm, attempting not to make it too obvious that that was exactly what she was doing.
Grateful to be back on solid ground, Chel awkwardly stumbled behind the rest and said, "Yeah. We should set up camp, right? Get the weenies on the fire?" Probably not the best phrasing in a group of three guys.
She scanned the horizon, noting a small building (something sturdy, but maybe inhabited by not-so-great things), a beat up trailer (Chel had no desire to stay there tonight) and another, smaller building that looked somewhat more manageable. "My vote's on the littler building. Easier to take on anything inside it with less ground to cover." Chel was actually smarter than she looked, she just never employed her intelligence unless it mattered. "What about you, beanstalk?"

The first thing that hit his nose was the smell of fish, and he wrinkled it, giving his head a shake. Farm smells, animals, those things he was used to, the smell of the sea, not so much. Granted Deus had made it far more familiar, but then Deus was lacking the wildlife that seemed abundant here as the boarded the boat and headed towards the docks.
"Ready as we can be, boss," Shiloh called up to Jack, stepping onto the rickety looking dock. He offered a hand to help Ian off the boat, and then followed them off docks and onto the far sturdier shore. "I'll pass on the roasting weenies, though, thanks Chel."
He laughed, giving her a casual grin, and follower her gaze across the horizon. "Probably easier to maintain too, should we need to."
Grins aside, he hadn't liked the sound of that cry.
