“Weren’t my choice,” he mutters, but he leaves it at that — he’d been hoping Rosalie would be moved to rescue First, not avoid him like the plague. But there’s little to be done now, not when he’s so clearly blundering about like a bull in a china shop throughout the entirety of this conversation. Here’s to hoping all the wine causes Rosalie to forget most of it.

Leaning down, he loops one of his arms around her, just underneath both of her arms so that he can more easily support her. He’d outright carry her up the stairs .. but that’d do dangerous things to her stomach, and besides walking is yet another thing that he can force her to concentrate on as a distraction. “Aye, I’ll help. You kin teach me how t’plait yer hair all fancy like, once ’tis washed, how’s that?” He coaxes her along, step by step, never letting her sway too far, never letting her even think she might be falling. To the stairs he goes, and steadily up them: after all, he knows the way.

"Can't believe you'd leave yer own brother to that pompous a**." She's not about to let it go without getting one more jab in at her least favorite Grimm, one she's fairly certain wouldn't even bat an eye if she called him that to his face. That doesn't necessarily mean she'd want to, or that it would be a good idea even, but it has at least crossed her mind. Perhaps not now her mind is on doing the elder of the twins a favor, but perhaps later, when she'd sobered up. It was worth a shot at least, right?

The promise of getting at least some affection is enough to drive her on, and indeed she does seem more bothered by trying to keep her steps straight. It's a challenge for both of them, really. She seems to always be on the verge of swaying to fall, and she just can't seem to find her center of balance even with him there. It takes quite a while before they make it up to the top, though with several complaints (the damn step kept moving, she swore it!) it seems there's some victory for him in it.

Though he hopes she don’t see it, he flinches at her statement — and the words are out of him before he can stop them, spilling out of chapped lips, hoarse, clipped words that don’t sound like him at all. “I thought he hurt you,” he mutters, maybe hoping she won’t hear, “so I run him off. Jay’ll make sure he don’t act the fool.” But even he sounds ashamed for what he’s done, and when he gets her to the top of the stair he rewards her with a big kiss, thinking maybe that’ll distract her well enough she’ll go and forget what he’s just said, or doubt she’s heard it at all. “Com’on, then, let’s get you sat down and get out a washpan, right? Jest a bit more, there’s a chair over here ..”

While she does hear it, there's a certain look of shame on her own face. She's gone and made him think his brother would hurt her? How preposterous! In fact... "S' more n' likely I would've hurt him 'nstead if he did try." She's not helpless, she's run off men before. "M' not helpless. 'Sides....he knows better..." But indeed, she seems to be plenty distracted by his lips on hers again, the slightest hint of a smile on her face when he does finally pull back. Indeed, if there's one person who can make her feel better, it's him. She stumbles a few more times before he finally sits her down, head spinning as she tries to sit still. In fact, it's not just her head, it's the whole damn room. Perhaps it's for the best that she just closes her eyes to make it stop, though she still can feel everything spin, like she's on a boat at see.

"'M gonna regret this in th' mornin', aren't I?" She groans, laying an arm over her eyes.

"Aye," he tells her, and if the answer's a bit cruel, it's also quite true. He sighs, though, having settled her in the chair best he could, and gives a kiss to her forehead to stay her over for a moment. "But there's that can be done for it -- sit you still a bit while I'm off to get water." He'll pause long enough to make sure that she's steady in the chair before he leaves her, going down to fill some buckets .. though as grimy as she may be, it might take more then a few, even with a sponge-and-towel bath to see her really clean again. For all the effort, he's the notion that she'll feel better for it, and she'll appreciate waking up in a bed that ain't covered in soot.

.. no need to think about the fact that it's enough to distract him, too. He'll be back in time with water, cheeks red, panting slightly from where he'd hurried up and down the stairs, and he puts a mug of that water -- cool and clear, tasting faintly of the tank it'd been in -- to her lips when he returns.

She wrinkles her nose at his confirmation, groaning slightly as she feels her fingers go numb again, wondering how long she can even manage to stay awake. It's nice to have the comfort of her lover to soothe away the pain his twin's gone and caused, but better yet, to try and help her recover from her drunken stupor. It seems like soon enough he's gone again, leaving her to feel like she's drifting in the waves with nothing to steady her. Perhaps it's for the best that it's almost rocking her to sleep.

She barely hears his footsteps coming up the stairs again, and is somewhat startled when suddenly there's a mug at her lips. She nearly chokes, sputtering a little before she really gets control of her throat again, drinking every last bit that's offered to her before she sighs, coughing from the bit that went down the wrong way. It's perhaps for the best, that after she seems to relax a bit more, she reaches a hand out for him, gently tugging on whatever bit of fabric she's found, that she finally says it.

"'M sorry..." She really is, she's caused him a lot of trouble. Lifting her arm just the slightest, she opens an eye to glance at him, vision unfocussed and blurry, but at the least she can see him...

"I know," he says, and his voice is soft and tired, but he puts his hand to her cheek and caresses her like he's done so many times before. "I'm sorry, too. I shoulda said better, so you'da knowed what was on." He shakes his head a little, as if to toss off both of their sorrow, and then goes to start helping her out of her apron, perhaps in the hopes that by starting there he can remove the source of most of the soot before he starts to clean off her hands and face. Which he'll do once he's got her apron off, dipping a clean cloth in the water and doing his best to rub the soot from her skin, with repeated dousings of the cool water.

"You bin workin', though, looks it! Whatcha made so far?" His voice is coaxing, falsely bright: he don't want to talk of no sorries anymore, no hurts. He wants to distract her and distract himself, because there ain't much neither of them can do just now.

"S' not yer fault...S' no one's fault..." For once it's her turn to reassure him, sighing as she lets her eyes slip shut again, which turns to be for the best once her apron is off her. She shivers a little at the feeling of the cool water on her face, wrinkling her nose as he finally starts to work through the layers of grime she's accumulated, and begins to complain that he could have put it over the forge for a bit to warm it, only to shut up as the damp cloth returns to work through further as he finally gets through to the pale skin on her cheeks.

She huffs a little at his question, it obviously not being anything he really wants to ask, before she finally indulges him. "Nothin' special. Just whatever seems easiest to get my mind off everythin', though that didn' work out so well...." Maybe she shouldn't mention all the little daggers and rings she's made with the both of them on her mind, especially not the rings. "Jus' backstock."
