"That's not what I meant," Zippeite barked, seemingly offended by the way she had interpreted his hint to go away.
He didn't attempt further talk. He stopped merely threatening her with the weapon and he took several quick steps and moved to swing it at her. Swat her away and shut her up.

That was fair. Irene didn't really understand this guy at all, so she was bound to get his motivation mixed up. "Then what did you m- hey!"
Before she could even finish her question, he was coming at her with his weapon. Which, aside from being disappointing- she thought things had been going kind of well- was really bad for her. Her guard was down, and by the time it came back, she only had time to throw her arms up in front of her in an attempt to block.
The staff met her upper arm with a painful thwack, and Irene gave out a sharp cry as she leaped backwards, her hand clutching the spot where a bruise was surely starting to form. "What did you do that for? I haven't done anything to you!"

"Go away and leave me alone," Zippeite only snarled. He regained his stance and made a jerking move like he was going to strike again, but it was only a threat.
"If I hit your head with the weighted end it'll take it clean off, and don't think I won't."

If that was all he wanted, why didn't he just leave? Or refuse to answer her questions? He didn't have to resort to violence, no one did!
"If that's what you want, fine. But please, think about what I asked, just a little bit." Holding her hands up, one arm significantly lower than the other, Irene backed away. It wasn't until she reached a corner, and backed up around it, that she allowed herself to look away.
She still didn't know how things had gone so very wrong at the end. Clearly there was a lot she had yet to learn about these people, and talking to them. But it was, Irene figured, a partial success. She would have to be satisfied with that for the time being.
