Weapons, shields, hyperdrive, pretty much everything seemed a solid summary.

"Not a thing beyond the shields being mentioned a couple of times. I didn't exactly take any Super-Advanced Nonexistent Starship Systems courses."

He could guess they had armor, but beyond that was going off into the blue really fast. Honestly, he was sounding like he knew what little he did from a combination of assumptions and what the Captain had already said. Logic and keeping an ear on terms being used were letting him stay fairly on the ball, skimming over the few bits he didn't know anything about, like those plasma cannons on the front of the ship.

He got a laugh out of her.

"Well, consider this a crash course in Super-Advanced Nonexistent Starship Systems 101."

She entered a few commands, a bubble appearing around the ship.

"The Unity has dual-layer shielding. Two different sets of shields. The normal energy shields that absorb energy and deflect projectiles..."

a second bubble appeared.

"And graviton shields. Graviton shields create a layer of hyper-compressed gravitational force, enough to distort radio signals and light itself. They require the singularity drive to work, as they are rather powerful. When used, they set off every gravitational sensor for a good lightyear. As such, they're only good when in combat."

The bubbles disappeared and the display zoomed in to a cutaway of a hull section after a few commands entered.

"Tritanium duralloy. One of the hardest metals known. And when given an electrical charge, it becomes polarized, which helps reduce plasma and collision damage."

He smiled when she laughed. Maybe he just hadn't been plain enough last time, she seemed to have a decent sense of humor anyways. That was always good, he wasn't sure he'd last on this ship to long if nobody showed any sense of humor, he'd drown in the gloomy air. He looked back to the holographic display as the Ensign started manipulating it as she explained the defenses, both layers of sheilds and the armor plating of the hull itself.

"Seems like a potent batch of defenses. You mentioned a Singularity Drive, I assume that since the fusion reactor has a star, the Singularity Drive has some kind of singularity like a black hole?"

The name certainly implied it, that and the deign of that graviton shield, compressing those kinds of forces and needing something besides the power of a star behind it, the only thing he could think of with more energy to it was exactly as the name said, some kind of space-time singularity. And from the sound of it, those graviton sheilds were probably almost impenetrable, feeding off that kind of power.

"Pulling that kind of power, I assume the graviton shields are almost impenetrable then?"

"The Singularity Drive is powered by an artificial Singularity. It is supposed to power the weapons and defenses, with the fusion reactor handling the rest."

The display didn't change. The power systems weren't part of CIC's bailiwick.

"And graviton shielding can't be penetrated, but they can be collapsed like any other. Each hit draws significant power. Too many and the Singularity overloads."

"That doesn't sound like it would be healthy for the ship. Or the surrounding solar system."

And it didn't, singularities were crazy enough, one overloading would be really bad. Assuming that meant it exploded or something similar, anyway.

"So, this place seems reasonably busy, does it have another purpose outside of relaying information to the bridge during combat then I assume?"

"Not at all. Nor for anything else. We've learned that the black holes created by the artificial singularities, can only be closed by another singularity. And seeing as we don't know of anyone around her with that kind of tech, that'd be very bad."

The display shut off, as no one seemed to be using it anymore.

"Not really. Most people are in here running diagnostics or repairs. Every shift runs their own set of tests, as the CIC is a highly vital area of the ship. Without it, we're effectively blind in combat."

Well wasn't that a surprise, the only way to close a black hole was by colliding it with another black hole. At least she wasn't saying they had some kind of little device they just threw at it and poof, it was gone...

"Well, seeing as I'll be dealing with it in a few hours, what kind of tests are we talking about here? I can see why they would be important, of course. Can't exactly have the center of all your information suddenly break down in the middle of combat."

She handed him a padd.

"Right now, we're conducting a test with the turret gunners. They fire a few shots, we try to track them. We also have the Magazine launch a few training torpedoes, and we track them as well, relaying everything to the Captain."

He took the padd, apparently these things got handed out like folders used to be before the chaos. He was pretty sure he wouldn't have the slightest idea what was in it, but he at least looked at it.

"Well, unfortunately right now I don't know how to read any of the data here, so I have to ask directly, how is everything working so far here?"

"Oh...of course, sir."

She brought up the holo display. It was showing blips here and there.

"Sensors are tracking about 85% of what we throw out there. It sounds like a lot, but that means only 85% of incoming missiles and torpedoes can be seen by our sensors."

Looking at the padd at the same time the holo display was coming back up brought up the same thing in about as many words, the sensors currently picking up roughly 85% of what was being thrown out. But the other officer mentioning what exactly that meant helped point out how bad that number actually was.

"And that isn't near enough, I understand that. Can't exactly have even 15% of incoming fire getting through, especially with the shape the ship is in now."

He looked at the display, showing blips all around the ship, a good test dispersal from what he would guess for a test like this, all around the ship at various ranges. He looked at the padd again, to see if it had any mention of how the work on repairing the sensors was going. Although he didn't really know how all of this was being prioritized, since almost everything was wrecked.

The Ensign was preoccupied by incoming results.

"Even at full strength, 15% is a bad day if we're not in a formation...okay, we can now track 90% of the sky. An engineer named Harkness wired the tactical sensors into the Big brother suite for now, to give us more power."

The Ensign turned bright red and gave Gavin a concerned look, biting her bottom lip.

"Sir? Please don't repeat that. PO Harkness isn't known for doing things by the book..."

He noticed the sudden preoccupation when the Ensign didn't respond quite as quickly as she had been before, and the padd flashed along with hers, updating automatically with the changed results, drawing his attention. Then she started speaking as he looked at the new results, quickly pulling out the increase in efficiency from the new information but nothing else yet. Unlike the Ensign, he didn't know what on here was important and changeable so he couldn't just pick out the important details that quickly. He glanced up as she said the engineer had boosted it by hooking together the main sensor array to the tactical sensors to boost the power. Her sudden flush and concerned look directed at him made him lower his padd as she chewed on her lip.

"I'll make sure to remember that then. If he gets results though, he's still an asset. Guess that's why he's around though, if you know that much about him. What's the shape of the tactical sensor, I know the Big Brother suite is still damaged?"

He looked down at the padd momentarily. There was his name too, now that he knew what he was looking for. He might have to see this engineer when he wasn't working if he wasn't busy. Who else to start learning a bit about all this mess from?

The Ensign checked the data again.

"Umm...The tactical sensors are still partially fried, as is most of Big Brother. but when piggybacked on each other, we can see clear out to Europa."

She grinned and pulled up a holo display of Europa.

"This is the only holo display on the ship, so, occasionally, the Captain will come in here to assess a tactical situation. Hence, the door leading to the bridge. But she'll never harass you. She just thinks better in 3d."

So the tactical sensors were at least less fried then the main sensor suite, that was good... He looked to the display, bringing up what was presumably europa, seeing as it had just been being discussed.

"The captain comes down here to assess situations occasionaly because she thinks better in 3D? Well, that helps inspire confidence, actually. That wasn't a terribly common skill with people I knew. And in space like this, that will be helpful."

He looked around. He really didn't know a lot about this place, but he seemed to know more then he'd honestly expected. Assumptions could work out after all. But, it wasn't nearly enough to run this place. Those simulations he'd be doing in a while, he was suddenly rather glad for.

"I should get out of your hair. I'll be back here soon enough anyway, after all."
