"... are you going to leave now," Mark quietly finished just as Maebe literally, began to slap some sense into him. He blinked rapidly, clearly thinking but not acting. Just as equally slowly, he fished for the ten dollars and clung to it in one hand as if it were a lifeline.

"No." The movie had started playing again and he had turned away from her to watch the movie again. The same movie, on repeat, six entire episodes, the same routine, the same predicted outcome. Starships. Invasions. Being a hero. Saving a sister. Coming home a Jedi. "I think I'm fine right where I am."

And he sounded almost normal.

Maebe followed his eyes for a moment, looking back at the screen, and then at his face again. Something settled in her mind; a realization that made Mark just a little less unbearable. She fished out the remote from the bowl, and placed it in his lap. Then she stood, with the bowl in her arms, and leaned in - carefully managing not to block the screen, this time. She pressed a very light, quick kiss against his cheek, at the corner of his lips, and stood back up to leave him in his office alone.

But she took the beer and Doritos with her. Because she'd paid for them, and like hell was she about to be that charitable with the moron.
