Thorin fought of the urge to scowl at his baby sister deciding that schooling his expression into a steady, focused, line that he used during terse meetings would be the safer option. Dis wielded her tongue the way a porcupine used its quills and her barbs practically never missed. Keeping quiet Thorin was able to learn that this was and was not about his nephews. It was not about Kili falling into a previously frozen pond. It was, however, about them, specifically his involvement with them.

Thorin was glad for all of his training. He was glad he had learned to bite his tongue on occasion. He was no expert at it; his temper had a way of winning out against his self-control. This time it did not or he would have made the dire mistake of mentioning her husband’s death. All of Thrain’s children had come together to raise Fili and Kili after the devastating event and Thorin did not appreciate being lectured on how he could or could not be involved. Blessedly Thorin had managed to keep all of this only on his mind. Blessedly he had not just provoked the wrath of his sister.

Unfortunately not provoking her further had not saved him from her sharp intuition. “It is nothing, Dis.” He lied, his eyebrows inching together ever so slightly. He was almost certain that Dis knew of his foul dreams but that did not mean that he wished to share them with her.

Dis rolled her eyes in a theatrical fashion. “I am trying to think of a way for you to make it any more obvious that you’re lying to me, brother dear, but it’s simply not coming to me.” One of these days she was going to have to find someone to teach him how to lie properly. It would be a useful skill for a king to have. It might have to be her. Fili could lie but Thorin hardly needed to learn his tells, Kili couldn’t lie properly to save his life, and Frerin would just laugh every step of the way. Thorin would likely never consent to the lessons anyway. Even thinking about it was a waste of her time and a pointless distraction from the matter at hand.

“Come, tell me what’s on your mind. If you will not tell me I will be forced to assume that you really just dislike my sons and I will take measures to keep them far, far away from you.” Dis pitched her voice slightly so that Thorin would hopefully pick up on the fact that she wasn’t serious. Dis had no intentions of separating her boys from Thorin, not when they admired him to such a degree.

Thorin leveled his baby sister with an unamused expression. Her quips were not as funny as she thought they were. They were merely insulting and Thorin had no patience for insults, not even from his family.

His reluctance to answer truthfully, however, had only served to provoke his sister into making threats. Thorin could feel his temper boiling up again. "They are not yours to take." He snapped realizing only after a moment precisely how foolish that had sounded. They were her sons. Of course the were hers to take. If she did that would mean nothing good for the kingdom though. Fili wouldn't be able to receive the training he needed from Thorin and there were no other heirs. None. Frerin and Thorin had both failed to ever take wives and Thorin doubted that would change any time soon if it ever changed at all.

"Dis...you cannot take them. Whether I confide in you are not, you cannot take them." Thorin looked back at his sister, his eyebrows angled and his eyes pleading. He could not beg her not to do it, his pride would not allow it but he could do this much.

Dis sighed. Of course Thorin would miss that she was joking. He was terrible at dealing with people one on one when it wasn't about official business. "Thorin, would you listen to yourself for a moment?" Dis chided feeling more like Thorin's mother than his sister in that instant. "For all your big words you sound just like Kili did whenever I would try to take something from him." She laughed a little at the comparison but it was a short lived burst that trailed off into a low sigh. "Thorin, truth be told you worry me when you do these things. You worry me, you worry them, sometimes I think you're just going out of your way to scare everyone out of their wits! And then you won't tell anyone why you are doing the things you do." Dis frowned deeply feeling tired like she hadn't before. Her ranting would do little good, she was starting to remember this now. She had a better chance at convincing a rock that it could fly than she had at getting Thorin to stop lashing out at the nearest target, like her sons, whenever something crawled under his skin.

"Thorin, just speak to me. I am your sister! Not some official or fussbudget looking for a good story. We share blood, just tell me what is troubling you."

Thorin found that Dis was the most difficult individual to get along with at times like these. She would make "jokes" that were neither funny nor were they jokes (like removing her sons from his life) and would badger him incessantly until he gave her what she wanted. Today that seemed to be the answer to a question that was deeply personal. Dreams like these were not meant to be shared but telling her that it was only a dream would only bring on even more pestering. there was no winning with her.

"Dis, just leave it be." Thorin said tiredly. He didn't intend to worry anyone but there didn't seem to be anyway out of it. Saying everything that was on his mind would only show weakness of character and weak was not something a king could be. He needed to be strong, decisive and level headed in order to rule his people. If that meant keeping things from his sister to preserve that image then he would.

"It is nothing you need to worry yourself over." He added, trying to be reassuring, before turning to wander deeper into the woods. Staying would only mean more questions that he didn't want to answer and going to see the lads would mean more of a different sort of question. Alone he had no one to answer to but himself. There was nowhere he needed to be so today he could be alone, and he would be.

"Stubborn goat of a stallion." Dis muttered as Thorin dismissed himself. "Don't think this is the end of this!" She called to his retreating back. "There will be plenty of time to talk later!" Thorin didn't respond but Dis knew he had heard her. One day she would get to the bottom of this mystery of Thorin's moodiness and she would hear it from the mouth of the old goat himself.

One day, but not today. Today she would go make sure her sons had actually listened to her. Thorin might have escaped but she wouldn't let her boys do the same. With a determined set to her jaw Dis turned around and marched back up and over the hill to see to her children.
