"I suppose when you get down to it, it doesn't- we both want to care for things smaller than us." Moth looked down into her salad, suddenly bashful. "You know, most phonies tend to think the bug thing is, well, unsettling or off-putting. But I think... I think you get it." You get me, she wanted to say, but didn't know how that would come off. He'd probably take it well, though- there was a gentle, understanding heart under that polished armor. There was so much more than just looks and muscle to Valiant; she found herself drawn to his heart most of all. "The little things are the ones that need the most protection; how can they flourish if they're never allowed to grow? I'm so glad you understand..." she took a brief breath before spitting it out- it felt right to say it. "Me. I think when you get down to it, that's what makes me tick, and it makes me so, so happy you understand." She quickly stuffed a bite of tomato and carrot in her mouth before she could stick her hoof any further in, waiting for his reaction with a bit of trepidation.

Moth-Drops might actually be perfect. Valiant couldn't say for sure, because in his own daily life he had the motto of always room for improvement and thus push himself to greater feats, but he wasn't sure that applied to the mare with carrot and tomato abruptly stuffed in her mouth. Valiant is also fairly sure that he his horribly biased and would not be a fair judge, but Moth-Drops is most likely the most perfect mare he has ever met. Valiant felt like he was filled up with happy feelings and thoughts and it was difficult to know how to answer it because he didn't know what to start with.
"... But they're not really smaller than us, are they? A little old lady doesn't look so big, but she's important to her family, her friends, grandchildren- she could mean the world to them. Little insects may not look so big, but they're important, and most phonies can't see that. Where would we be without flowers and grass and healthy vegetable gardens?" Valiant tutted, shaking his head.

Moth smiled and chuckled a little, holding a hoof in front of her mouth. "We'd be hungry- and same if we didn't have little old grandmas, I imagine. I've heard they make phenomenal cookies. I wouldn't know- I mean, I don't have a grandma- but what about you? I've met your sister Lady Faire- have you got any more family that you're close with?" She found herself wanting to meet them badly. They had to be great if they turned out Valiant- what must his parents be like?

Valiant was taking bites of food here and there, honestly too taken with Moth to really pay attention to what he was eating. Which was likely a shame, it was probably very good, but alas his company was even better.
"Well my family isn't too large- I have two mothers. You might have met Spica before? She's very lovely, a gentle lady- and my other mother is Total Party Kill. She is very... challenging. Of course you know Lady Faire, and our other sister is Frag Doll," Valiant tried to not have a Look on his face, but his sister had yet again rebuffed his efforts to get her wearing something frilly, "And I have an aunt- Roll To Dodge. A very lovely aunt," Valiant is secretely unsure how she could possibly be related to TPK, "And of course my cousins, Marvel, Rocket Cat, Warp Nine, and Mecha Crusade." His face looked rather like he didn't quite understand their names. Which would be an accurate look, because he really, really did not. "And of course my other cousins, Sunny Delight, Midnight Snack, Roc N' Rolls, and Po-Tay-Toes." Valiant nodded, looking much more pleased with them as he could actually understand what they were on about in day-to-day conversations. "Oh- well and then Marvel had children too, didn't she? Peach Lightning, Knockout, Grey Goose, and Punch Drunk." Valiant stared blankly at Moth for a moment- before abruptly laughing.
"I suppose I do have a lot of family, now that I list them off!"

"Gosh, that is a big family! You must have had such a good time growing up- I never really got to meet my siblings or parents; they did the gene donation route and didn't have much to do with any of us, I think. But I always wanted a big family," she said dreamily. "I used to pretend my friends were actually distant cousins, but it never panned out that way. But you've got... let's see, if they're your cousin's children, that makes them... second cousins, I think. All the way to second cousins!" She went to pick up more lettuce with her fork- but was she done eating? From the look of Valiant's plate, he nearly was, too- this dinner had just flown by. Hopefully he'd be interested in sticking around for dessert; she certainly wasn't ready for the night to be over!

"Oh it was an interesting time." Valiant chuckled- he would have abruptly launched into an explanation of all of TPK's unique parenting, which Valiant ha assumed was normal, and Spica's much kinder parenting in comparison, but then their waiter was back and offering up some pie. And who in their right mind was going to turn down juicy fruit pies on such a lovely warm spring night? Certainly not Valiant. Certainly not because he was having far too much fun to go just yet, and he would likely not taste a bit of it as he hadn't tasted anything from the now-empty plate being whisked away. Yes it was. Valiant was always a horrible liar, even to himself.
"I think the funny thing is that we are all so very different." Valiant smiled, choosing his topic carefully. While tempting to make offers that Moth could have that very large family she craved, it would be terribly ungentlemanly to make such remarks- especially on a first date. "But friends- well, they'll really be the best family. You can choose your friends, and you'll always have something in common."

"And good friends so often lead to more good friends, making the friend family bigger. It all tends to work out very serendipitously- like for instance, being friends with Lady Faire led me to meeting you and having this date, and, well, I've had a truly wonderful time," she said, bashfully looking down at her pie. "I just don't know where the time went!" She wasn't quite sure what the etiquette here was- Valiant didn't seem like the type she could just... invite home, possibly to stay forever. Not on the first date, at any rate. But she made up her mind that one way or another, this would not be the last time they saw each other.

It was probably not so good to eat so absent-mindedly- but it would not be the first time he had been too enraptured to realize what he was putting into his mouth. He almost thought he hadn't been brought his pie at all until he looked down and saw the crumbs. Rather sad, it was probably very tasty, too.
Certainly wasn't the only tasty thing at the table.
Those were not gentlemanly thoughts, and thus were kept to himself.
"Would you like to go on another?" Valiant asked without pause- the only way he could bear the end of this date was the thought of another. Not that he would insist if the lady turned him down, of course, but he rather hoped that she was just as eager as he was for another wonderful night.

"ABSOlutely," Moth said, suddenly aware of how loud she'd been on that first syllable. "I mean, I would be honored and love nothing more- tonight's been really, really fun and I, um- I think I'd like to see a lot more of you- I mean, you know, you a lot more," she stammered, dying a little inside. "That would be really, really nice." She was suddenly very aware of everything around her fading into the background as her eyes met his- perhaps it was just her wishful thinking, but this seemed to her, as it was put sometimes, a coup de foudre- as strong and unavoidable as a lightning bolt, and just as natural. This felt right, and she hoped against hope he felt the same.

Moth really, really was lovely. Sparkling silver eyes. He was fairly sure he had murmured a 'yes' in response to her- he knew exactly what she was talking about. He to wished to know more about her, and it would be very nice. She had a little crumb of pie at the corner of her mouth and even that was cute, which was hardly fair. Pie crumbs should not be that sweet.
Valiant found himself leaning in- and for a second he thought, perhaps, it was to help with that crumb. But no- he had other intentions-
Intentions that were interrupted by the waiter and their check. Valiant was very brisk to pay, cheeks a slight rosy hue.

Moth was super annoyed by their waiter- how could anybody who works at such a charming café not realize that there was a MOMENT IN PROGRESS? She mumbled a protest as he paid before she had an opportunity to offer; but she could pick up another time. She didn't want him to think she was just taking advantage of him!
As they walked back to her house, she thought she heard violins- no, wait, those were crickets. Even better. The short stroll seemed criminally quick, and as her home appeared, she was struck with how lonely the cozy cottage could be.
"I suppose this is goodnight then," she said coyly, fluttering her lashes a little as she gazed up at him. Even though he was much taller than she was, she gathered herself and reached up for a kiss. There was no way he was getting out of this without a kiss- he simply was perfectly kissable- mind, body, and soul.

Almost criminal really, to have such a perfect kissing moment dashed, when all the fireflies were out and the air was comfortably warm. He did, however, manage a small smile as he magicked a napkin up to wipe away that crumb for Moth.
The walk had been far too short, even as enjoyable as it was- and as excited as he had been to see Moth's home upon arriving that night, it was so sad to see it now. But at least he had that promise of a second date. And very shortly he would be assured she hadn't accepted out of a fit of obligation- Valiant was almost surprised to find her leaning up towards him. Which was excellent, because Valiant had the same thought in mind. He was delighted to lean in for a sweet, simple kiss. Unhurried and needless, affectionate without demand.
"I had a lovely time." The alicorn murmured, still rather close as he was reluctant to move too far away just yet. His knees felt suspiciously like they were, in fact, made of jello. "And I look forward to the next."

If she didn't say good night now, she would drag Valiant inside and that wouldn't be good for the long run. And she was really hoping there would be a long run. So after a lovely, sweet, gentle kiss, she finally withdrew from their embrace. "Same here," she said breathlessly, wanting to snuggle against his chest and just melt.
This was clearly the start of something beautiful.
