"If they were warm, exciting, and genuine, I would not be able to put up with them," he countered. "And I cannot imagine what could possibly be in the slums to make the stench worthwhile." Aside from bits of information and certain rare items that could only be acquired by rather dubious means from the shadier side of the underworld, of course.
"But as I fail to see any reason for us to continue our acquaintance, it is all rather moot, would you not agree?"
Why was this woman acting as though they were suddenly the very best of friends? It was disturbing. After she left tonight or tomorrow, he had no intention of seeing her again. Besides, the slums of all places? Was she truly noble-born, to enjoy lingering in such places?

"Well...Come to think of it I think I find most nobles infuriating beyond belief." She shrugged, wrinkling her nose. "But stench? I haven't really smelled anything that offensive there. Unless you're talking about the wonderful smell of food! You haven't tasted anything until you try the stew some of the housewives make. But there's plenty of things there to make a trip worthwhile. Music, for one. And plenty of other things that you can't find anywhere else." Like certain weapons, jewelery, and such other commodities.
She outright snorts at his next comment, raising an eyebrow. Perhaps he's right. But she doesn't feel like leaving yet. It only means going back to her own prison, and she might as well play nice with him for a while longer.
"Depends. Why don't you tell me why it's so rewarding to you to put up with the hoity-toity nobles who have their heads up their asses?" Might as well hear the other half of this, after all. She's indulged him with a few reasons why her beloved escape is such a nice place.

Other things which one cannot find anywhere else? "Like cutthroats, thieves, and beggars?" he suggested. Such things, he could do without. And somehow, he very much doubted that any of her housewives could match Mrs. McClellan's cooking. The woman was a goddess in the kitchen.
His lips thinned at her choice of words. It was one thing for a person of breeding (or indeed, good taste) to resort to coarse language to make a point - was Kathryn not his dearest friend? She was no delicate lady, but she was very clearly a lady. But it was something else entirely to speak like a sailor as a daily routine.
"I could argue the same points in favor of the peerage," he said. "Then add such points as intellect and learning; and worthy opponents." Though he had not much bothered to seek out those opponents of late. He had more important matters than verbal sparring to attend to.

"Like weapons, information, and contraband items that could do some good being in the right hands..." She hums, grinning a little more. Oh the many proposals she'd been able to unravel with a few simple innocent words. It had been worth it. "Though I much prefer the information. Or the occasional jewel."
She gave him a moment to explain, frowning. She did indeed see his point, but that didn't mean she wanted to do anything about it. Perhaps he could convince her more.
"I've very rarely found a worthy opponent. Every single eligible suitor I've been sent to, or had sent to me, has been a scared little boy who goes crying home to mother without the bat of an eye." She mentions, glancing off to the side, "Plus they never seem to be well educated." Though she hasn't seemed to included him in these categories yet.

"You must be going to all the wrong gatherings," he said. "Perhaps that is why you have had so little luck in suitors." His eyes flicked up and down her form once more. "Or perhaps it is simply your lack of good taste keeping them away." Either way, he hardly saw how it concerned him.
Still. It had been a good long while since he had showed his face at any parties. Mother would be so disappointed. Tori, too, for that matter. If he kept that up, his darlings rivals (or so they fancied themselves) may just forget him. That simply would not do.
Unconsciously, he reached out through his bond and sought Sigyn's presence. Yes. The hunt was his priority. But at the moment, he could do little more than he had already done to prepare. Perhaps it was time to reenter society and see what there was to learn. He may just find something interesting. Or better yet, useful. Sigyn seemed to agree.

"I have had so little luck because I keep getting sent boys and not young men." She huffs, crossing her arms as she looks him over again. "They try all this poetry and gifting, and it's all just so boring. They must be coached on it, because it's the same lines every time." Perhaps he could sympathize now. "They're all younger than than me too. I never get anyone my age or older. No one witty enough to talk with."
She sighed a little, looking out to the windows and reaching for Myst. She just wanted to go out riding, to feel the wind in her ears again, to breathe in the fresh air. Maybe if she asked...
"Do you like riding?" She murmurs, looking back to meet his eyes. She's hoping for a yes, it would be a shame to have to go alone.

"My sympathies," he said, not sounding the least bit sorry for her. While he could understand her dissatisfaction with unsuitable suitors - Spirits knew the young ladies his father had foisted upon him had been dull and mousy - Thomas was not feeling particularly sympathetic. If that was the worst she could complain of, then she had a blessed life, indeed.
He cocked a brow at her question. What about this conversation made her think he was interested in going riding with her?
"A little late for an evening ride, don't you think?" While he did, in fact, indulge in more than the occasional ride - the forest was his second home - it was a quiet time of reflection and contemplation. A place to clear his mind. Something to be shared with Sigyn alone. Not something to indulge yet another young lady with - not that she acted much like a lady.

She snorted, knowing damn well he wasn't the slightest bit sympathetic. She could only imagine what numbers of ladies he'd been through, the young dainty things who would break at the slightest touch. She wasn't like that, she could show him, and maybe, just maybe, he'd give her the chance. "It's a shame we'll both be going through this. All the demure young things without the slightest bit of personality."
"No, it's the perfect time." She tsks, shaking her head. "The sun's going to be setting. It'll be beautiful." With a slight hum, she grins at him. He hasn't said no... "Even if you won't join me, I'm planning on riding."
She needed to feel it again. She needed to feel free.

He hummed dubiously, lips thinning in displeasure. However, no matter who the woman in question was, he could not allow her to venture into the forest alone. Never again would he bear witness to what he had seen. Never again.
Oh, he could lock her in her room for the night - something that would no doubt drive her away from him quicker than any unpleasantries could manage - but he did not see the point in bothering. He could be cold, yes, and cruel to a point, but he was not quite that heartless. In the grand scheme of things, it was a simple enough request.
"If the lady insists," he said, not bothering to disguise how childish he thought her request. Better to get it over with now and be done with it - and her.

Even if locked in a room, there was no doubt she'd find some way out of it. After all, he hadn't barred the windows, had he? She'd simply climb through and be off riding without the bat of an eye.
But his words brought her a cheerfulness, something that obviously meant the world to her. He'd go riding along with? He'd see the sunset? Fantastic.
"Oh I do insist." She grins, stretching for a moment before turning, swinging her hips a little as she walked. "Will you be riding your own guardian? She was rather beautiful from what I saw of her."

His cool look clearly questioned her intelligence. As though there could be any question as to who he would be riding.
As for the sunset itself, he was less than enthusiastic. However, if it would get her to leave him in peace for the remained of the evening, who was he to protest? A small price to pay, all things considered. If she did not insist on prattling on endlessly, perhaps he could even pretend that she was not there.
Well. It was a pretty thought, at least.
