A Quiet Reflection

Words: 1,089

The night sky was dark and dotted with little bright stars and only held the young shifter’s gaze but not her attention. This night her mind was turned to various things. Finnley thought of all she had learned since she had left home. She had learned about healing from few people. Namora, Ime’s mother, was someone who was extremely nice and helped teach her quite a few things. Ime was a whole different story. Just thinking of her caused Finnley to smile. The hybrid was very interesting, and just as nice as her mother. That one day that they had met in the woods could have turned out so much worse. Ime could have been someone who was mean and teased her for her stuttering or inability to recognize plants to make salves. But she did nothing of the sort. Instead, she helped Finn gather some of the flowers she had been looking for as well as show her another plant! Supposedly it only grew next to the base of trees. It was a very interesting plant, when Finnley had tried a bit of it, it had made her mouth go numb where it had come in contact with the plant! Healing uses for that plant must be numerous. Finnley stopped her inner monologue to try to remember that she would need to keep an eye out for some more of those plants. In any case, the one day that had started out so uncertain had a bright ending. Finnley was incredibly happy to have a friend her own age…and gender. They had met up a few more times after the initial meeting. A few times just because and a few other times having lessons with Ime’s mother. She was learning quite a bit from these lessons, even though she felt like she might be slowing Ime down since the other prentice already knew a lot of the plants that they were using and deep down Finnley felt embarrassed when she had to ask what a plant was. The mother/daughter duo didn’t seem to mind though, and were always very patient with her. It made her happy to think she had a friend she could count on. Her parents would undoubtedly be happy as well.

There was something she wasn’t sure what her parents would think of though. To be honest with herself, she wasn’t quite sure what SHE thought of it even though it had been her that put herself in the situation. Natsu and Viveka were great guys, they were in love and anybody could see that. They had been so kind to her during the battle. And even afterwards, amidst all the chaos, they sat down and allowed her to sit with them and learned a little bit more about each other. It’s when she learned that they had wanted children, something biology wouldn’t allow them to achieve on their own. Finnley had just wanted to help, just as she always wants to. They had helped her quite a bit and she really wanted to be able to return the favor. Volunteering to be their surrogate came up quickly, and she had to admit, it made her really nervous to think about. Don’t get her wrong, she would never take back her promise to help, but she was a little weary about the whole ordeal. She was quite young, too. It probably wouldn’t hurt for her to try to get to know each of them on her own. There was still the matter of who would be the father of the children. Even just thinking about it caused Finnley’s face to grow hot with a blush. There was no denying that she had felt a stronger connection and attraction to Natsu. The bard had quickly found his way to her heart. But would the couple be okay with that? And would she? What if after she really got to know the pair she didn’t want to? No, she was just being silly and worrying about every last detail. It would just take time. She still needed to grow up a little bit before she could consider being a mother. That was one good thing; at least Natsu and Viveka were okay with her being in the children’s lives after their birth. Finnley didn’t want to think about how her children might feel to know their mother hadn’t stuck around. She had a few questions for the pair, but there was really no reason to worry about it. She would get her chance to talk with each of them more.

One thing that was starting to concern her was the future. There were so many things going on in her life that it was starting to make her worry. With the previous battle lost and the Obans moving up into Juahar, did they have any hope to beat them? Everyone seemed to be training even more now. Nobody liked loosing, the battle or their friends. Lives had been lost. And perhaps next time she can help a little bit more. Her thoughts turned more selfishly after that, but back to the surrogacy topic. She was happy to be able to provide Natsu and Viveka with the gift of children, but where would that leave her after? She would need to find a husband wouldn’t she? Natsu and Viveka were in love, it was a stupid (and mean) and romantic thought to think one of them would leave the other for her. No, their love was what everyone else tried to find. What was bothering Finnley was who would want “used” goods? Did being a surrogate for them make her undesirable? Would a good man want her after she’s already had kids and been with another guy? It worried her that there may not be a soul in Tendaji that would accept a stuttering fool of a girl like her with a past like that. In any case, Finnley tried to turn her mind to happier things once more. After a time, she would be a mother and give the greatest gift to two guys who had been so nice to her. She had made a great friend in Ime, someone she couldn’t wait to get to know even more. Ime’s mother was giving her lessons and she couldn’t wait to learn more about healing so she could help more people! The present was very bright. Now if those stupid Obans will go away and Tendaji will make her perfect man the future will be just as bright.

An Achievable Dream

Words: 1,020

It was a hot day in the healer’s tents, and Finnley was feeling it. Sweat collected on the back of her neck and she wiped it away while still managing to focus on the task ahead of her. Despite being the only one in the tent, Finn kept looking over her shoulder. There was just some eerie feeling that she had that made her keep looking over her shoulder. Perhaps it was just because she wanted someone else to come into the tent. Being in the tent all by herself was kind of lonely even though she really needed to try to focus on the task at hand. Her thoughts kept turning towards everyone she had met so far, and how lucky she had been to have met them all so far. But she was losing focus again. Most of the healers were out gathering today, with a few wandering around the tents. Finnley had decided to make use of this time, no matter how lonely it made her, to try and memorize all the different ingredients that were kept in the tents. The healers had been teaching her quite a bit, but she was still having problems remembering which plant was which. Finn was just happy that she was to the point of knowing which plant did what for most of them now, it was remembering the names of them that was getting her. She also had a lot of salves memorized now, which was a big accomplishment for the young prentice. Just thinking about how much she has learned throughout her time in the camp was astonishing! The stuttering shifter girl had changed a lot since she had left home. Would her parents recognize her as the same naïve girl who left home? To be honest with herself, she wasn’t quite sure. She knew she wasn’t the same person she was, and that was okay with her. She was a better person, and she would be able to make a difference. Which is what she wanted all along, right?

A quiet swish of the tent door didn’t go unnoticed by the lonely prentice who looked back to see a youngling cradling her hand standing just inside the entrance to the tent. The girl’s eyes were wide and red, tears already (or still) coming out of them. Finnley jumped up from her seat and rushed over to the girl. ”Are y-you okay?” She asked the girl who still hadn’t moved. Not only had she not moved, she also did not say anything. Finnley knelt before the crying girl, who now upon closer inspection could be identified as a shifter like herself. Smiling kindly, she gestured to the girl’s hand. ”Can I see your hand?” She asked calmly, hoping if she was calm the girl would calm down. Thankfully it seemed to work and the girl’s crying started to slow and the sobs had subsided. Tears were still falling but not in the quantity that they were when she arrived. The young girl held out her hand which she was clenching, Finn loosened the girl’s fingers to reveal a small pool of blood that started gathering quickly. The girl whimpered as she studied the small, yet surprisingly deep, cut on the girl’s hand. ”It’s not too bad, what is your name sweetie?” She asked gently as she led the girl to a cot a motioned for her to sit down. ”Mika…” She said so softly Finn almost hadn’t heard her. Going to the same bench she was at when Mika walked in, she gathered up a few herbs, including a leaf of the stuff Ime had showed her. She grabbed a mortar and pestle and went to sit in front of Mika. ”Okay Mika.” She started as she ground up the leaf first. ”I’m going to put th-this in your cut to make it not hurt okay?” With a nod from Mika, she smoothed it into the cut with a slight wince from the girl. Putting some other plants together, she waited for the other one to take effect. It was a noticeable difference as the girl’s tears had stopped all together. Smiling, she got a bowl of hot water and a rag and let the water cool a bit before she started cleaning the cut. ”How did you g-get this cut?” She asked Mika who looked hesitant to say. ”I was climbing a tree.” Mika said softly, her lip still quivered as if she was about the burst into tears again at any moment. Once the wound was clean, she started putting the ground up herbs into it before wrapping it with some clean cloth to bind it and keep it from getting infected. When she made sure it was tied tight enough, she went over to wash some of the blood off her hands. ”Well you’re all set to go Mika! Just b-be careful on those trees and let it heal before you climb again okay?” With a nod from the girl, she scampered out of the tent while Finnley stared after her with a smile on her face. Finnley had always known she wanted to help people, and healing always seemed to be the way to do it. She had learned so much lately, and she was so proud of herself for being able to help Mika all by herself. That was definitely not something she would have been able to do when she had first let home. Being able to help a young girl did nothing but cement the fact that she knew she wanted to be a healer, and now she knew she would be able to accomplish it. It was a feasible dream within her grasp. There was still a lot that she needed to learn especially about working with more intense wounds that she may see during a battle. But she was off to a good start and had a good basis to continue her training. It was comforting to know that she had come so far. Yes, she still had a ways to go but she would make it. ”Let’s do this.”

What does the future hold?

Words: 1,050

Things had changed fairly quickly for the young shifter. All her plans and hopes had seemed to crash down at once leaving her in a world where she wasn’t sure what she should be doing. Sure she traveled as a healer and helped where she could, but even that didn’t seem to bring her the joy it once did. Finnley was lost. Not in the typical sense of the word. She knew exactly where she was located, where she had been but not quite where she was going. And perhaps that was her problem.

Finn hadn’t really planned to be this alone in the world at this point in time in her life. No, quite frankly, with the people she had met she had envisioned her life very differently. Her thoughts turned momentarily to Viveka and Natsu and she felt her throat tighten. That’s where she was supposed to be, if all their plans had panned out accordingly but obviously they hadn’t. She sighed and tried to turn her mind away from those two. Perhaps it could be considered her first heartbreak, after all, she did seem to want to cry every time she thought of them. Finn couldn’t decide if that was because she missed them, which she really wished she didn’t, or because she missed the future she could have had.

When she had first met them, sure she thought them a little odd but it had seemed that she was exactly who they had needed in their lives. They had been in love but both being of the male gender had no way to expand their family besides adopting. That was where Finn would have come in. Sure the thought of what she would have to do caused a blush to rise to her face, even now. The good would have outweighed whatever embarrassment she would have felt. She would have helped them bring children into the world. It was true it would only be one of their biological children, but that was better than nothing, right?

If only that had been the only issue. Finnley shook her head and sat down beneath one of the large trees on the border between Tale and Juahar. The real problem had been her, or so she had led herself to believe. She had been foolish, childish, naïve. The list could have gone on and on but she had already spent plenty of time building that list in her head. It was her fault things didn’t work out because she just had to go and start falling in love. And that had been what was silly of her. She hadn’t known at the time that her growing feelings for Natsu would cause her so much pain. Even if she had known, would she have tried to change her path?

She had screwed things up for herself when she started feeling more for them than she ought to of with just the future of being their children’s biological mother. It was her growing love for Natsu that made her realize that he would never be able to feel the same way about her as she did for him. Not only that, but Viveka would always take priority. She understood that, deep down she really did. They were together long before they had met her, and she was just the one that had tried to come between them, right?

Finnley sighed again. It was all a mess and also the reason she found herself sitting here on the border of Tale and Juahar. She had to choose what she wanted to do. Really, the choice was between moving on or trying to make something of what she had planned so long ago. Just because Natsu and Viveka were out of the picture that didn’t mean she couldn’t still be that person for someone else. Finn wasn’t quite sure how she’d go about that as she had just stumbled upon Natsu and Viveka. Would she also want to set herself up for the same mistakes? Sure she knew what mistakes she had made and could maybe keep herself from making them a second time, but that wasn’t guaranteed. Could she keep herself from developing feelings? It was obvious how quickly she became attached to people and Finn wasn’t sure that was something she could really help.

Her other option was to go home. She hadn’t been home in quite some time. Since before the war really as she had left home to go help with the war efforts and that was when she met the two and began traveling with them. Her family probably missed her and she had to wonder how big her brothers had gotten. Going home brought up a lot of worries for her though, what all would her family ask her? What all would she tell them? Would they be disappointed in her? Finn wasn’t quite sure if she was ready for her parents’ disappointment. Or would they be proud of her? For all that she had achieved with her magic and healing. Would they be proud of her for trying to help a couple conceive or would they just not understand at all.

There were so many questions. So many possibilities for whichever path she chose. It was no easy choice but Finnley was determined that now as the time that she needed to choose. For her own good and happiness. For her own future she had to decide now. But what would she pick? Would it be the right choice? The young shifter was freaking herself out with this choice. With a soft huff, she stood and backed away from the tree slightly. She closed her eyes and started spinning herself around. She would leave it to luck then, or maybe the subconscious part of her brain to control when she stopped. She let herself spin until she started to feel dizzy and then she stopped. Finn’s body swayed and she thought maybe she had done a little too much spinning. As she had planned though, she took a few tentative steps forward before stopping once more. When the spinning sensation had finally subsided, she opened her eyes. The dark forest of Juahar was ahead of her, the open plains of Tale behind. Finnley was going home.
