O Christmas Tree (Tree trimming time!)
Molly & Colby: Molly had been more than happy to learn that her and papa were being allowed to go home, even if it meant a nurse had to come along to help her papa out with things. She was so much better than she'd been, but it was still easier at this point to just rest than be overly active, but at least they were home. She knew Jacen didn't trust Brie, but she really liked talking to her, probably because she'd never had a mom before. Colby was happy for her help too. It was still hard for him to get around and do things, so every bit of help she could give he accepted with grace.
Today, had been a special day, he'd called someone he knew to bring...something. She hadn't heard what he'd been talking so low, and it was late when the knock finally came. Cold air filled the house, and there was a strange smell in the air. Colby had always had a tree yes, but he'd always done fake trees. However he was so late in the season putting one up he got a real one... he'd also invited Brie and her son to join them for trimming it.
So Molly was sitting on the couch, listening to Colby slowly moving things into the living room, keeping an open walkway for her to get around in.
Jacen, James & Brie: Brie walked in, one arm firmly around her son's shoulder's he'd been trying to sneak off all morning, and into the afternoon. She suspected she knew why. Jacen, Colby's son, didn't seem to get along with James: and she was pretty sure the feeling was the same on James' end. "Jamie, it'll be fun! Your first Christmas tree!" She said, glancing around the room. "And here's Molly," she said, warmly, gesturing so James would sit next to her. In the time she had worked for Colby, she had come to appreciate--and even look forward to his company. "Colby, do you want any help?"
Molly & Colby: Molly smiled hearing Brie's voice and she turned towards it, hearing James was with her. She recalled the talk the two of them had not long ago about James, and all and how she told Brie about Jacen having been a pokemon before too. It had been a nice talk and Molly found herself happier than ever with a female presence around so often! Colby for his part, was leaning on a cane he had, a smile lighting up his face as he heard Brie. "If you could push this box in there? Then we can start trimming the tree. There's lights, and all sorts of decorations, the kids can have fun putting those on once we string the lights how's that?"
Jacen, James & Brie: James leaned close to Molly and said, "Do you have any idea what this is all about? Mom gave me some lame story about a baby and a star--I think he must have been an arceus or something, turned like me and Jacen. But what's with the tree? And all the songs?" The ponyta boy felt as if he had a thousand questions, and though he didn't know it, the vanilite climbing down the stairs had wondered about the holiday as well. "Dad, I'm ready to help!" Jacen announced, taking a seat on Molly's other side, sticking his tongue out at James. Blegh, fire Pokemon. Who invited him anyway? Oh, right. Papa had. Argh. Brie pushed the box in as directed, smiling at Colby. "That sounds great," she said. "I'm sure they're excited!"
Molly & Colby: Molly giggled at James and shook her head, and tried to explain about Christmas, and found she couldn't find the words. Colby, over hearing this smiled and simply said "There are a lot of reasons to celebrate Christmas, and in this house our biggest reason is to celebrate the end of another year, and to welcome in a new one. To give gifts to those we care about, to show how much we care, and to sing songs to lift our spirits." Molly beamed at this and nodded. "Now you three give Brie and I a bit to put up lights, and then you can go through the boxes and start hanging decorations." Molly had done this before of course, with Colby's help since she could only reach so high, and couldn't see what areas needed more decorations. But she still had fun. "We can turn on some Christmas carols and sing while we decorate, right papa?" "Of course Molly!" "Yay!" she clapped her hands together in glee then.
Jacen, James & Brie: James blinked at Colby's explanation, thinking it over. He smiled and nodded understanding. He could see celebrating the end of the year and welcoming the new one, in hopes that it would be better than the last. "But I didn't buy anyone presents," he said, frowning slightly. Maybe his mother would take him to buy something for Molly and Colby later. "Okay! Come on, Molly, you can show me--whatever you'd like to show me!" He grinned. "Come on, Jacen. Its Christmas and it sounds like a good like to get along," he offered his hand, and Jacen took it: only to be shocked by the small buzzer James had placed there. Jacen glared, quickly rubbing at his hand. "You haven't seen my room," he muttered. "Molly, want to play?"
Molly & Colby: Molly beamed as Colby started up some music and she sang along quietly, letting the boys be...well...boys really. She shook her head at Jacen's question though. "You two can go play. I want to decorate the tree." Colby smiled at James then. "You can make presents too you know. Gifts don't need to be from the store, just from the heart." he pulled out lights and plugged in an end, and stood at one side, directing Brie to the other and began to carefully wind the lights on the tree. "Later, I'll make a garland of cranberries, and another of popcorn to decorate the tree with." "And the paper chains papa! those are so fun!" "Right, and paper chains, and Molly can teach you two how to cut snowflakes from paper." Molly was beaming again.
Jacen, James & Brie: "Before decorating!" Jacen protested in explanation. "I want to help!" Maybe he could frost the tree with icicles when they were finished! He didn't know the carols, so he listened quietly. "Make presents, really?" James asked, wide eyed. "What kinds of stuff can I make?" He glanced up at his mother, who was helping Colby string the lights on the tree. "Oooh, I bet all three of you can help us string popcorn garlands," she said. "I used to do that when I was a little girl. We'd watch movies and have a bowl of popcorn for eating and one for stringing!"
Molly & Colby: Molly didn't like how demanding Jacen would be, and she once more shook her head no. "I don't want to play right now Jacen! I want to listen to the music and be here to help decorate when it's time." "Well..." Colby was thoughtful. "You can draw pictures, or I can teach you to make little toys." Molly listened and was glad her papa had someone he could show those things to. She couldn't do it after all. "That would be fun for you guys Brie, but I've tried to help before, I poke my fingers so papa doesn't let me string popcorn anymore. But I can make paper chains! I have a bunch of paper papa cut for me!"
Jacen, James & Brie: Jacen hesitated, and then, slowly took Molly's hand. "I know, I was just saying I meant we could before decorating. I want to help too! This is my very first Christmas!" He smiled. At least the first one he'd ever had a name for. "I'm really happy to spend it with you, Molly. I'm sorry if I got too excited." He studied Colby and added, "Me too! I'll make something for everyone!" Toys? That sounded interesting! James gave a smile and a nod. "I'd like that," he said gratefully. Brie froze, she'd momentarily forgotten Molly's situation. "No," she said, "I think we should all do something everyone can. I wonder if Molly'll make the longest chain of all"
Molly & Colby: "How about while you kids make paper chains, Brie and I work on the food garlands?" It sounded like a decent idea to Colby anyhow. Once the lights were done he smiled. "Alright you three, looks like we're ready for you to hang things. Now boys, you need to be careful with the metal hooks they can hurt you if you're not." he turned to Brie and motioned to the mantle over the fireplace. "Lets work here and get it set up. I have garland and stuff to put up here, I even got Jacen a stocking this year...and.." and here he reached into the box and pulled out all the stockings, each had a name stitched into it. Colby, Molly, Jacen, James, Brie. He'd bought the other each one since he was inviting them to spend Christmas with them.
Jacen, James & Brie: "Sounds good, papa," Jacen agreed immediately. That way, everyone was involved! He listened to Colby's instructions carefully. Metal hooks? Huh. He picked a bulb up carefully, and studied it. He placed it on a branch, careful to make sure it didn't slide off. When it didn't, the vanilite boy felt more confident and stuck another up. "It smells like the forest," he observed, looking to Molly with a smile. "I'll help if you want," he added. James, noticing Jacen's success and not to be out done, took a bulb and placed it on a branch on the opposite side. "I think this will be the prettiest tree ever!" Brie nodded, moving to the mantle to help Colby decorate when he brought out the stockings. She beamed, and without a second thought, wrapped her arms around him in a hug. "Thank you," she said.
Molly & Colby: Molly settled by a box and reached in carefully, feeling the smooth glass under her fingers, and moving her hand till she located the hook and picked it up carefully, her free hand extended and brushing against the pine needles. "It does smell like the forest!" "I bought a real tree this year, I have to make sure I keep it watered too. Let us know when you kids need us to hang things higher up okay?" he hugged Brie back with a smile, a twinkle in his eyes as he pointed up at the mistletoe he'd hung earlier in the day, and bent to press a light kiss to her lips. It was a bold move on his part he knew!
Jacen, James & Brie: Jacen nodded in understanding: Colby needed to water this tree like they watered flowers. He imagined the tree needed more water than the flowers, though. "Told you," he said. "When you first got hurt, Molly, I slept under a tree much bigger than this. I saw stars twinkling through the branches at night. I think I like this tree better though. It has lights, and we're decorating it." Together, was the unspoken word. Brie, though surprised by the presence of the mistletoe (how did she not notice it?), didn't hesitate. She returned the kiss, pulling back slightly to smile at him. "A strange place to position it," she teased, "here by the mantle." She kissed him again. James groaned, covering his eyes. "Oh, yuck."
Molly & Colby: Molly heard the groan from James and paused in the middle of hanging another ornament, brows furrowing. "What's wrong James?" of course she had no idea what was happening! The ornament finally found a branch, though her things were getting all jumbled up. Colby would relocate some of her ornaments soon to higher branches to balance the tree out some. For the moment he grinned at Brie. "What can I say? Christmas came early for me this year."
Jacen, James & Brie: "Mushy stuff!" James continued to moan complaints. He straightened, wrinkling his nose at his mother. "What's with kissing under a plant?" He demanded. "Is this part of Christmas too? Ugh. I don't like that part." He added to Molly, recognizing that she couldn't have witnessed it, "Your dad kissed my mom!" Jacen had nearly dropped the ornament he was holding in surprise. If possible, he would have gone pale. Brie snickered at James' reaction, and smiled at Colby. "Me too."
Molly & Colby: "Mushy stuff?" what was mushy stuff? She shrugged a little and hung another ornament on a different branch though her hand paused at James' demand for an explanation, and his further explaning what had happened. "I...don't know....?" she had no idea if this was "normal" Colby merely smiled at the kids. "What can I say? I've fallen for your mom James."
Jacen, James & Brie: "Mushy stuff," James affirmed. He made a face. "Ugh, that means we have to see that all the time!" He complained, placing another ornament on the tree. He went up to Colby and hugged him. "I guess I don't mind so much," he said, "as long as you don't do that in front of me too often." It would be nice, them being together! That practically made Colby his dad! Jacen froze at Colby's words. He'd fallen for her? Oh no! But maybe... maybe it wasn't so bad. Molly could use a mom. And Colby had been alone along time. And maybe--maybe he'd have a mom too! Brie smiled, "You have?" She asked
Molly & Colby: Colby chuckled at James and rested a hand on his shoulder. “I can’t promise that, but I’ll make an effort to keep it in mind okay?” he turned to Brie and gave a chuckle. “I sure have. Hard not to with as nice as you are, and how much Molly likes you too.” He squeezed Brie gently. “Come on, let’s finish decorating, and then I’ll show you boys how to make toys for presents.” Molly was happy her papa had finally decided to move on, and let himself care about someone again, he seemed lonely sometimes!
Jacen, James & Brie: "Okay. But no more mushy stuff. At least, nothing too mushy." He wrinkled his nose. Blegh, girls. And blegh, kisses. "Mom has cooties, you know," he informed Colby matter of factly. "Now you're infected. And Molly too!" Brie smiled, nodding. "I hope James learns to love you as much as I do," she said. Jacen set a decoration on the next branch. He was still stunned. "So... you guys are going to date and stuff?"
Molly & Colby: Colby couldn’t help a laugh and nodded his head at Jacen’s stunned question. “Well that’s my plan anyhow, if it’s alright with Brie.” He couldn’t help a laugh at James’ declaration of cooties. “I think we can handle cooties just fine but thank you for your concern James.” Molly continued to hang decorations quietly, but she was smiling. She felt so happy!
Jacen, James & Brie: Jacen reached up and put a bulb up on the highest branch he could reach. He glanced over at his father, "So this is how you ask someone on a date?" He asked. "So if I wanted to--date someone, I just tell them I fell for them?" "Cooties are deadly," James insisted, "Once you got them, you'll never be the same."
Molly & Colby: Colby chuckled softly, and moved towards the tree, carefully moving some of Molly’s ornaments higher up and around on the tree, a thoughtful look given. “That’s certainly one way yes. Though you’re a bit young to be thinking about dates son.” He ruffled Jacen’s hair affectionately then and continued to move some ornaments. “So after the boxes are put up, how about some hot chocolate and a movie for everyone?” he looked to Jacen again. “I hear your worried about melting if you drink hot chocolate, and I think you’re fine you’re more human than pokemon now after all.”
Jacen, James & Brie: "I nearly melted with a fever though," Jacen protested, making a face. He would have to ask Colby about dating later. "I guess I could try it," he said. "As long as you're around to make sure I don't." James went and sat next to Molly. "So my mom and your dad. That almost makes us siblings!"
Molly & Colby: "Well if you prefer I can give you chocolate milk instead." Colby smiled and did began to half clean as boxes were emptied and the rest of the ornaments were put up. Molly gave a smile in James' direction. "All three of us are almost like siblings! It's so nice!" she was happy to have a bigger family! At Colby's word, she got up and made the trek to the table and sat waiting while boxes were put up. This would be a great Christmas she knew!
Jacen, James & Brie: "Thanks, Dad," Jacen smiled at him. He still had that natural instinct to avoid anything hot. He helped put the boxes away, glancing at Brie. He hesitated, and then wrapped his arms around her waist. "I'm glad Dad fell for you," he said. "Now he'll have all of us to make sure he's happy." "I've never had siblings before!" James thought he'd like it, even if one of them was an ice pokemon. He followed Molly to the table. "So, what's hot chocolate?"
Molly & Colby: "It's...chocolate...that's hot?" Molly shrugged. She didn't know what exactly it was not being able to see what it was. Colby went into the kitchen and made up four cups of hot chocolate and one chocolate milk and brought them all to the table, watching as Molly took a careful sip, though before long she began to look sleepy, and he smiled. "Looks like all the excitement is getting to Molly, and she is still healing. Finish your drink and I'll tuck you in." Molly took another few sips, and pushed her cup away with a yawn. She was very tired!
Jacen, James & Brie: "I'll take her to bed," Brie offered with a smile. She took Molly by the hand. "Come on," she said. She glanced at the two boys, then Colby. "I think you've got things covered here."
Molly & Colby: Colby smiled and nodded especially as Molly took Brie's hand and began the walk to her room, yawning all the while. It was easy for her to make her way, and change into her pajamas before crawling into bed. "I'm really happy that papa likes you Brie, I do too." laid down with another soft yawn, more than happy to be laying down sleeping.
Jacen, James & Brie: "Me too," Brie said, softly, pulling the blankets up to Molly's chin. She placed a kiss on her cheek. "Goodnight, love. Sweet dreams."

Dear Journal,
First time writing in you! I'm James. I have red hair and dark eyes. I have a mom, dad, a brother, and a sister. Mom says I should tell you about myself. I guess because someday, nine million years from now the silly daily things I do now will be worth something to whoever finds and reads this. So I'll make it worth your time, whoever you are. I'll make a record of my pranks! With arms and thumbs, there's so much more I can do than I had been, as a ponyta.
That's right journal, I used to be a Pokemon! I think I still am a Pokemon, whatever mom says. She says I'm just the same as Molly. Molly's my sister. I'm younger than she is, mom says. Around the same age as Jacen, I think. Jacen used to be a Pokemon too. A vanilite, an ice type Pokemon. I feel kind of bad for him. He worries a lot because of what he is. He's afraid of melting, which is kind of funny, but then kind of not. Because he really could melt. If he suddenly got too hot, or I accidentally blasted him with some kind of move...
I don't want to talk about that though. Before I was a boy, I was my mom's pet. She used to let children ride me. That was fun! But now I'm the same size as those children. So they can't ride me--but I can prank them! When mom found me changed, she told me she had promised a little girl a ride. That little girl was Molly. Its strange to call her a little girl, now that she's my big sister. She is small for her age, I guess. But she's bigger than me.
It was strange learning to walk on two legs. I'm sure it was weird for Jacen too. He didn't have any legs before changing! I like being able to hold things in my hands. I think that's my favorite part of being human. Ish.
I'll be writing more often!
- James
