"I was talking about you, actually," said Alistaire, in a bored sounding voice, flicking a piece of imaginary dust from the shoulder of his coat. "Pathetic, poor, and apparently with a rather large inferiority complex. My goodness, Ian," he said, casting his brother a glance, "You certainly know how to pick the interesting ones, don't you - "

His sentence was cut off slightly at the end, Ian having trodden on Alistaire's foot, but the latter's irritation was hidden beneath the smirk on his face, lips twisted upwards. He remained silent, Ian's chest feeling tight, and he turned back to Maebe, surprise registering on his face.

"You mean, you don't..." he said, and then stopped, slightly taken aback. "He's...alive. Well, mostly," Ian amended, but the relief was obvious in his eyes. "What that a*****e Rep did to him was pretty brutal, but yeah..."

His face softened. "Shiloh's alive; he's in here, over in a different bed."

Alistaire reminded her of a comical bad guy in some over-exaggerated british comedy. Or perhaps he was more like Jafar. Yes, she told herself. Alistaire reminded her exactly of Jafar. Except she'd already nicknamed him Prince Ali, hadn't she? She had to remain consistent.

She hummed the theme song quietly under her breath, using it as a distraction to keep her from thinking too hard about what Ian was trying to say. It was easier, that way. After all, she was high on drugs, she probably misheard him. It wasn't as if it was even possible-

Shiloh's alive.

The humming stopped. Her apathetic mask cracked, right down the middle, for just a moment. She knew what was about to happen. She was going to cry. She was going to scream. She was going to be emotional, and nobody was allowed to see that. Especially not some upstart stranger with a dickish attitude that would have normally turned her on.

This moment couldn't happen. Not now.

"Ian." Her voice cracked with emotion. "Roll me away. I need some time alone."

She didn't know how much longer she could hold back the tears.

s**t, Ian thought, seeing the expression freeze on Maebe's face, her entire sense of self seeming to come to a screeching, abrupt halt. s**t, s**t, s**t, s**t, s**t -

He hadn't realized that she didn't know Shiloh was alive; Ian had thought her comment about it earlier was just being glib, but apparently she hadn't realized at all that her best friend and his boyfriend was alive, and, in fact, sleeping several beds over.

Alistaire's expression was one of pure delight; a stark and terrible contrast to the Maebe's, and it made Ian slightly nauseated. "Alistaire," he said, and wrapped his fingers around the metal railings on Maebe's bed "Out. Get out."

His brother held up a hand. "No, but this is good," he said lightly, and there was a pleased smile that spread across his face, lips twisting upwards in a smirk. "You're clearly friends with the guy my brother's sleeping with, this is good to know. And, judging by your reaction, you're good friends."

Alistaire's eyes cut towards Ian, something dark in them. "No, this is very good indeed," he said quietly.

Ian found his voice again. "Get out," he hissed through gritted teeth, and Alistaire lifted a hand, waving it absently as he turned on his heel. "I'll be out in the hall when you want to chat," he said, and flicked a glance towards Maebe, an odd glitter to his eyes. "As for you," he said, "we should talk later."

And then he was gone, brushing by the curtain and disappearing. Ian waited until the clicking of his shoes had entirely dissipated before turning back to Maebe, uncertain if she wanted him to leave as well so that she could have some private time.

"...Maebe?" he said quietly. "Maebe, darling."

Alistaire was eating this up. Maebe could feel that familiar coldness, crawling against her skin as he delighted in her weakness. She couldn't move - she would have brushed him off and left if she could have, but her entire body was numb from painkillers and she couldn't even turn her head far enough to hide. At the very least, the numbness of her body kept her from shaking. All of the emotion that she normally buried deep down inside couldn't overflow with physical symptoms, because her body was dead to her.

Except for her eyes.

Ian was trying to get Alistaire out, but it was too late. Far too late for her. Maebe closed her eyes, and let out a choked, painful sob the moment Alistaire told her they should talk. That was what broke her - that this stranger, this nobody with no right to hold anything over her head, was there to see her cry.

But at least they were tears of joy - even if they looked just as ugly and messy as tears of heartbreak.

"Shiloh." She cried out, with a voice so hoarse even the nurse on call heard the suffering in her voice. Robert had left them alone for the most part, until he realized that the two men were making a barely-recovering patient emotional. He didn't need to know the reason - he just knew it was bad for her.

"Oi." Robert's gruff voice huffed out, as he pushed past them both with a syringe already in his hand. "You guys know she's not ready for any of this s**t. No more visitors today. Shoo." The syringe was plugged into a small tube jutting out of her IV drip, filling it with something far stronger than the fluid that was dripping into her. The effect was immediate - and Maebe was distraught over the sudden dizzying exhaustion.

"Waait," She muttered out, her breathing intensifying with frustration. "Shiloh. Want to see. Ian, help, Shiloh, I want-"

"What the hell were you guys talkin' about that she's all riled up, christ." Robert sounded miffed, much like a good disgruntled nurse should be.
