The conversation had went back to being dark again, though he guessed it wasn't hard considering the situation and their current environment. Still, he wasn't that good at cheering people up, and he looked around as if he find a motivational poster somewhere to read out loud.
Instead, he looked back at Jordan. Out of the many people on the island, he appeared one of the most sane and caring. Having him turn bitter or depressed would have been rather bad for a lot of people he probably cared about, and Melvin did not want to be the cause or the accelerant for that.
"Well, I think you probably kept this from happening ages ago, if that means anything. Rep was aware of the problem and said he was trying to work hard against it. I just think..........things happened. I don't know what exactly. Without seeing it, we won't ever know. It could have been a lot of things." Though Melvin didn't want to say that it probably was the same things it had always been. Someone got angry and took it to the field, and didn't know when to stop. To hold back.
Pressing his lips thin, he continued to think of what else to say before looking back at Jordan again. "Are ...you doing okay?"

"I hope that's true," Jordan said quietly. "I wish I knew more about what happened. What the trigger point was." He'd been elsewhere. Harrison had told him what had happened, but while he trusted Harrison's account, he still felt like something was missing. If Rep survived, maybe he could provide the missing piece, if he felt like talking about it. His eyebrows jumped at Melvin's question. He hadn't expected that. "I'm holding up." The tension in his shoulders and back that never seemed to go away held on tightly, and there was something tight about the corners of his eyes and his mouth, but he managed a smile. "Thanks."

"Don't mention it." He said, now left with little else to say. Conversations of this nature were not his style, and he rarely had to be involved with them. The only times he had to comfort anyone was his siblings, or to reassure his parents everything was A-OK. However, he knew most of them never brought their troubles to him, never wanting to place more burdens on someone that was taking medication and had a past with seeing shrinks. Fragile minds weren't reliable resources to lean on apparently.
So he slightly swung his arms, trying to think of anything else. Jordan clearly wasn't doing too hot. Holding up wasn't the same as just being able to sleep or eat. Holding up meant you weren't dead. "I...know I'm not the best person to talk to or anything, but like......if you need to...I usually visit Rep .......I think my number is listed." He wasn't sure Jordan had it though. "....just saying."

"Thanks." The smile was a little more genuine this time. "At least I know you're sympathetic. That makes a difference." He was clearly thinking of someone or someones in particular, but he shook it off with a small grimace. "I think I can get your number. I'll -- thanks."
He glanced down the row. "I should probably go. s**t to do, like always. At least it keeps me busy."

"Right! Right. Um yeah. I should probably go back to re labs and probably eat something." He glanced at his watch and a flash of confusion flashed. That wasn't the time, was it? Geez.
As silly as it was, he glanced at Rep and while he usually said by to the guy, he felt a bit ridiculous doing that in front of Jordan, do instead just nodded his head in Rep direction and then headed for the door. "Later, Jordan."

"Yeah. That'd be good. Sounds like a good idea, actually," Jordan said, mild concern surfacing in his eyes.
"Later," he nodded, and hung back as Melvin left, mulling over the conversation. That wasn't how he'd expected that to go. He wasn't sure how he'd expected it to go, but that had been a surprise. Finally he sighed and looked to Rep again, his eyes lingering for long and reluctant moments before he turned and left again.
