It's also worth researching into what grows wild and is freely abundant in your area. You can always wildcraft (which means to harvest from the wild) materials from your local area, and they will be as potent as anything you can buy in a store. Branches from trees for wands are always available, as are things like pine resin and cedar boughs, (or juniper berries, or spruce) for incense, and you may have a wide variety of herbs (what some call 'weeds') that grow during the warm seasons.

So long as you don't overharvest an area, and you're being respectful of the spirits of the plants or trees you're working with, wildcrafting is a great way to enhance your witchcraft. You might even find a local plant is better for your needs and workings than a more popular or historical herb with its' origins in western European witchcraft.

I agree with Morgandria - wildcrafting is an excellent idea. I do it quite often myself and it is a fantastic way to collect things in your local area. It's one of the reasons I adore bushwalking so much. Last time I was out I found an eagle feather (wedge-tailed eagle to be precise).

Indeed.

I'll also be attempting to start a little herb garden of my own next spring.

I'd always be to worried of mistaking one plant for another and ending up accidentally killing myself.

I suppose at first it'd seem like that but that's why you start off with a few simple things that you can't possibly get confused.
The fact that we have a massive backyard and that my mum's taught me what's good and what's not from a young age has certainly helped but I realise not everyone would have had that luxury. Books with good pictures are also a massive help.

I dunno, I live in a major city and the only shop we have is tiny. It focuses on so many religions and traditions that its supply is spread too thin to offer much more than the generic crayon-esque candles and pentagram necklaces... It has more Hindu stuff than anything, really.

It seems like the internet is almost always your best option no matter where you live.

I know gorse when I see it. And pohutukawa. And I know kowhai but only when it's flowering. And gum trees. That's about it, really, except a handful of flowers, and even then I'd be iffy about them in case there's one that looks very similar that I don't know about. I know daisies and dandelions and forget me nots and some roses and those big white lillies that are poisonous in some way, and that's about it.

Just going by the names I'm guessing those ones are native to New Zealand?

Yup.

Oh the pohutukawa looks kinda like bottle brush flowers only smaller, and the kowhai looks like Australian heath only it's bright yellow and not pink. Very nice either way. smile

heart First, look online(youtube has some videos) for instructions on how to make your own incense. You can use household herbs and spices for this.

heart You said you are good at drawling. Draw your deities in your favorite stories of them or works they preformed and place them around the room you will be in. For a finishing touch you can cut them out and mount them on foam core or mat board. You can go another step forward and make a triptych or diptych of the previous scenes, like the Christians used to do, and place this on your alter.

heart When spring roles back around be on the look out for seeds and sprouts you can use for an herb garden. They sell relatively cheep seeds online too.

Oh wow! That is actually a really great idea~ I should totally do that one day. :'3

Paper crafts and drawings on and around my altar would so awesome. Although, I have yet to find anything to devote myself too~ some practise wouldn't be too bad. Maybe just random things to see what works and what doesn't. Heh.

Thank you for that suggestion! //she hugs you tightly. Haha.

I found an etsy shop and thought these would be easy to make on a low budget. All you need is a shoe box(or a cheep wooden box from a craft store) a printer, some acrylic paint, and maybe some fake flowers/beads etc.
Here are some examples from the SHOP.
I however would not suggest buying from them as the prices are way too much.

As an Etsy seller who has been told -outright- by some people they plan to copy my pieces because I 'charge too much', that is an absolutely INFURIATING attitude and utterly disrespectful. Apparently I'm supposed to be flattered. It's really just rude.

I don't actually make money on my work, the majority of the time. We have to decide what covers our money spent traveling to get materials, the materials themselves, the amount of time and skill each piece takes, and then the packaging and shipping materials to keep those items safe and sound. Cheap out on any of it, and you've got an inferior product.

The majority of artists and crafters can't charge effectively for our time and effort because of people like you who decide it isn't worth paying for and you'll just copy our designs, rather than support us as artists.

If you'd said those pieces inspired you to design your own, in your own style, that wouldn't bother me nearly as much. But what you're suggesting is copying and ripping off another artist or crafter, because you're cheap. That's not acceptable.

I never said copy. I said examples, implying you do your own thing but that there is a specific format for the particular work you are trying to create. It's like a teacher giving students an example of a format and the students making their own thing. Perhaps next time I will chose something else as an example that is not so offensive, like pictures of actual nichos.
Also she said she had no spending money, I was only trying to help by giving her ideas, like I said she could use things that she might have at home. Not everyone has the money to support artists/crafters and that doesn't mean they should do with out.
Besides, the crafter of the nichos of this shop drew from actual nichos and put their spin on them. That is more what I am suggesting the op do.
