"Man friend. Okay. I explained the ******** rules to you. Does this look like a win? Does it look like he ******** listened? Let me answer for you. No. And no. This is not me smug. This is me at the end of my rope, with french fiction sawing at the cords."

Harrison's return glower was about as glowery as he got. He radiated glow.

"My job. Where were you in all of this. Because you've got some long ******** lashes, and I didn't see you gazing through them in a ******** useful manner."

"Hey, you're the one who said this entire thing was a ******** game," Ian said airily, rolling his gaze up to stare at the ceiling. "Also if this is you at the end of your rope, I'm sure you're just downright jolly normally."

Unfortunately for Ian, however, the last comment hit exactly where he didn't want it, exactly where he was hurting the most. Why didn't I stop you had been the question at the forefront of his mind for days now, driving him nearly insane. Harrison's use of it, his blatant disgust, stabbed into him almost like a physical wound.

He flinched visibly, his face paling. "Shiloh is - was - an adult," Ian said, inhaling a sharp breath that hurt. "I didn't feel like it was my place to tell him what he could and couldn't do. That was his fight, not mine."

Harrison sighed.

"That wasn't fair either. You're not...look. Defending's my job, alright. I'm a senior officer."

He buried his face in his hands.

"Is this what it's come to? It's like assassinating a ******** toddler. Christ."

Why was this guy so hard to get through to. It was like talking to a brick wall.

Well, Ian thought, a brick wall that kept saying one thing but meaning another thing. "Yeah, but defending who," Ian muttered, more to himself than Harrison, sliding low in his seat and folding his arms across his chest. He cast a sideways glance at Shiloh's pod, his face still paler than usual.

"It's more like talking to a toddler, if you ask me," Ian said peevishly, not feeling particularly mature at the current moment.

And he'd signed up for it, and what the hell did he care what Rep with his free time, but they were ******** trainees. It was unprofessional. And sad. And stupid.

"You know what, you deserve this," Harrison said, uncovering his eyes and ignoring Ian completely. "If you're in there, you've earned a ******** French class."

Harrison stood. Rep was too behind pod doors to have something thrown at him. And although Ian had an extremely punchable face, the last thing they needed was another violent c**k up. Harrison needed to stab something.

"I'm going to go train."

He'd pushed himself too far, besides pushing Harrison. The anger surged in him, hot and fresh and fierce, and Ian bent over in his chair, his hair falling over his face. One hand lifted to press his fingers against his forehead, pain searing across his skull.

"...I care," he said suddenly, loudly, too loudly, too much for his own ears, but his head was still down, Ian not looking at Harrison. "I care about Shiloh as much as you care about...him," he said, in a lower tone of voice, barely controlled. "Maybe...maybe not in the same way - " He couldn't even wrap his brain around that, and he was having difficulty enough getting just these words out properly, each one stuttered and hoarse and hesitant.

" - but I care." His hands moved on either side of his head, digging into his hair. "And this is the only way that I can deal with things."

Harrison stopped, fist around B0nez's flashdrive.

It left a bitter taste in his mouth. Not that way. Harrison knew he didn't mean, like the way you're a working team. Or, the way losing him is like losing an arm and a leg. Or even, since you guys are best friends.

"Yeah, I get it. He's your friend. But you're not a f** or anything. Just read him the book."

He followed up, quiet.

"Year's a long time to wait. You planning on being here every day?"

His gaze flickered towards Harrison, the briefest, faintest trace of a smirk on his lips. "Why does it matter what I am?" he asked. "I don't care what people call me, unlike other people; and besides, I don't like labels."

He shrugged his shoulders, leaning back in his chair again. Ian's eyes moved sideways to where Shiloh lay in his pod, unmoving and unawake, and his chest seemed tight, making it difficult to breathe.

"As long as it takes," he said. And then added, just to be obnoxious, "The Count of Monte Cristo's a long book, after all."

"There's a lot of guys out there with shiny hair and cute shoes."

Ian said he cared, but saying and doing were different. If they woke up tomorrow, it'd be one thing. Months and missions down the line (if they all lived that long), things could change.

"We'll see how many long books you're willing to read to a guy who won't put out. Here's hoping we only need a short story."
PostPosted: Thu Dec 05, 2013 6:32 pm

"Not sure what you're inferring, but all Shy's putting out is a lot of dead vibes," said Ian blithely. "Besides," he added, the trace of an old smirk on his lips as he looked over at Harrison, making the motions of opening his book again exaggerated and obvious, leaning back in his chair.

"I happen to like French."

"They're not dead," Harrison growled as he exited.

Rep didn't like French, but chances were he wouldn't hear it anyway. Harrison would come back when he'd gotten his need to stab something (nothing French, but needs must) out of the way.
