She chose not to answer him, because said like that, her quest for vengeance seemed like a child's rampant tantrum. Thomas had always been acidic, but she'd found that he rarely was on purpose. It was just...Thomas. Instead, she focused on him. "So your father has not removed his head from his a**, even after all this time?"

As if still a young girl, she clearly remembered the gossip her father had shared about the Duke of Tyneworth and how he had treated Thomas. It was why she had gone out of her way to make friends with the boy, especially after his mother's passing. If she had been younger, or he older, she had always felt that her and Thomas would have made a good match.

Kathryn's silence was answer enough, though he was not certain why she chose to remain tight-lipped on the subject. Still, it seemed he was not the only one with revenge on the mind.

At this further mention of his father, however, Thomas could only scoff. "It is amazing that he can accomplish anything, blind and deaf as he is. But then, I suppose he is accustomed to speaking out of his a**."

This willingness to openly insult his father may be new to her, for when she knew him, Thom had still been a boy holding onto hope that the Duke might recognize him. Indeed, he had glorified the man. Having become a man himself, Thom had long since grown out of that phase. Instead, he found himself occupied by more important matters. The man he was forced to call father had garnered only his deepest resentment.

She chuckled despite herself, though it wasn't the happiest sound. "My, you have grown up, Thomas Avery. Well," she said, staring up at the sky between the trees, "I do wish you luck in your ventures, and ask that you stash a bottle of your first vintage away for me for when I visit. I'm not sure how much longer I will be in Sunderland."

After the events of the Masque, all word of the wolves had stopped, except for those still recounting the atrocities the beasts had committed over the winter. It had been months since then, and there had been no sight of them. It was frustrating. "Some are saying the wolves are gone for good. What do you think?"

"Here and then gone again," he said. It was perhaps unfair of him, but Thomas found himself rather irked at the idea of an old friend reappearing from as good as dead only to hurry off again. "Aspiring to be the wind, are we?"

Ah. But there was a question. His countenance grew dark as he allowed his mind to go back to those harried moments when he and Sigyn fought for Tori's life. The moment when his eyes locked with the beast's. The moment when he saw into the depths of its thrice-cursed soul and had all but heard the malice and mockery it held for him. Him, and every human in Sunderland.

There was not an ounce of doubt in Tom's voice when he said, "They will return."

Grimacing, she glanced at him. Truth be told, for the longest time, she had found nothing in Sunderland to keep her there after the death of her family. She heard his bitterness however, and wondered if maybe she could find it in herself to stay, if maybe just for him. "I... could stay. Help you in the vineyard. It would be nice to have some tea with a friend on a weekly basis than a decade one."

And what if he was right? Winter was coming along swimmingly; if the monster wolves and their prince were to show up again, now would be the time to do it. Leaving would be foolish, but part of her had found it very easy to run all these years, and doing so again had seemed...natural.

My how far I have fallen, she thought, splaying her fingers against her thighs. Grosvenor looked over his shoulder at her and she felt the warmth of his love spread through her.

"No need to stay on my account," he informed her rather acidically. Thomas was a selfish man. He knew that much about himself. He was capable of generosity, to be sure; but since Victoria's death, he had found no particular urge to find the kinder side of his heart. Selfish he may be, but pitiful he was not. He refused to accept such sappery from anyone, least of all this woman he had once known as a girl.

"Though you are, of course, welcome to visit should you so desire." He'd be damned if she stayed because she felt sorry for him.

Katrana frowned, brows coming together. "Who said I would stay on your account?" she said with a little bit more harshness than she'd originally intended. "Not to sound selfish, but maybe I wanted a reason to stay, Thomas." The bitterness she'd heard in his tone about her leaving again had been proof enough that some part of him hadn't wanted her to leave, no matter the reasoning.

There had been nothing here for her for so long. Thomas may have lost his mother and sister, but she had lost everyone. Even if the duke still looked at Thomas as if he could see through him, at least there were others within his home.

Blackweald had no one. No horses, no servants, no movement, noise, or life. There had been nothing to keep her there.

Mood soured, she contemplated cutting the boar loose and just leaving him there, but something kept her from doing so, and she wasn't quite sure what.

She doesn't know that Alfred is there, btw. I'll figure out why at some point

He scoffed, somehow mollified by her harsh reply. "Then consider me at your service, milady." He honored her with an ironic bow, something that should have been awkward on Guardian-back, but somehow still managed to be graceful enough. "Use me as you see fit."

Rather abruptly, the trees parted to reveal a wide, rolling plain covered in row-upon-row of posts. They were empty in the midst of winter, but they were the sort that vines were clearly strung upon in the warmer months. Beyond the vineyard stood a proud stone manor - not as grand as Tyneworth, perhaps, but an impressive sight nonetheless. "Welcome to Ravensgate."

She looked upon the manor and smiled. The whole thing looked much like Thomas, if he were made of stone. Dour, proud, and a little cold. But it was a pretty place nonetheless, and she was happy that he had somewhere of his own. It almost made her want to visit Blackweald. Grosvenor sent her a sense of reassurement and even a bit of encouragement to do so. He wanted to see her beautiful home, since they had never gone there once since he'd manifested.

"A fine manor. I bet it's absolutely beautiful when the vineyard is booming."

The guardians began the final walk to the manor proper, giving her a chance to see just how big the vineyard would be come spring. "Though the name is a little dour," she said teasingly.

Thomas graced her with a droll look. "I am certain that my ancestors had your disapproval in mind when naming it."

It was a rather long ride to the manor itself, but the trip did not seem to take very long. Not in good company with a warm hearth and a hot meal to look forward to.

Rather than head directly inside, Thomas led them around back where they were met by an older, no-nonsense woman who could only be the cook. She quite efficiently shot off instructions to a pair of lads who then relieved Grosvenor of his burden and disappeared with the carcass. If she was at all curious as to Thomas's surprise guest, she made no comment on it; and if the lads thought to stare at Katrana, they quickly changed their minds under the cook's stern gaze.

"As ever, you are a peach, Beatrice," he said, to which she harrumphed and bustled inside - though not before a discerning observer might have noticed a glint of affection in her eyes.

"She adores me," Thomas confided in Katrana. Sigyn, meanwhile, led them to the lavish stable which adjoined the manor, proper. There, Thomas dismounted and saw her well tended. Though the doe was allowed inside, she often preferred to remain out of doors.

She inclined her head to the woman, and once she left, said to Thomas, "My father always told me, well out of earshot of my mother, that the cook was the most important woman in the house. I bet she does wonders with that boar."

Following him and Sigyn to the stables, she peered around and found Ravensgate to be in exceptional order. It had a warm feeling to it, something she couldn't pinpoint. Even the stables, though seeming to lack in many horses, felt comforting. Grosvenor breathed deeply as they stepped inside, enjoying the smell of fresh hay and feed. An appreciate snort punctuated his exhale and he laid his head over her shoulder, snuffling her cheek.

"If Thomas says it's fine, I don't see why you can't enjoy the stables as well," she said with a laugh, looking to her friend. "He's a right beggar for fresh oats, if you're willing to part with some."

"Your father was a wise man," he said. Terror though she could be, it was Mrs. McClellan who breathed life into the manor with her fine cooking. The kitchens were the heart of any home.

"I think we can spare a few," he said drily. Honestly, Ravensgate was not so poor, nor he so miserly, that he could not feed a friend's Guardian. Walking with Sigyn to her stall - it was an open thing with no need for a lock - Thomas called, "Oats for a guest, Mister Brown."

"Of course, my lord," came the reply from somewhere deeper in the stable.

"Mister Brown will see them settled, if Grosvenor does not object."

The buck stomped a hoof in excitement, but Katrana translated just in case. "No objections from him at all. Does Sigyn prefer this to the house?" she asked, knowing that each guardian had different preferences. Grosvenor preferred being beside her nearly all the time, but he also preferred any location that offered him the chance of food. Though guardians didn't necessarily need to eat, hers had never once turned down oats or apples.

Trusting that Thomas had a good man here to see to her beautiful buck, she gave him a last pat on the neck before turning to follow Thomas back outside.

Though the winter had been unseasonably mild, there was a bit of a n** to the air and she longed to be inside near a fire. She wasn't opposed to being or even sleeping outside, but with the comforts of a home so near at hand, it was hard to think of anything else.

"She is not overly fond of stone floors," he said, and did not bother to add that she sometimes came inside to sleep beside him or keep him company. It was not that the doe hated being inside, it was simply that she preferred grass or earth beneath her hooves.

Rather than circle around the manor to reach the front door, he led Kathryn in through the rear. Who was he trying to impress anyway? Still, even from the back, it was clear that the manor was of fine make, and the furnishings tasteful.

A footman took their coats, but Thomas waved him off afterward, instead telling him which room they would be using. The staff must know their lord well, for further instructions were not required.

"Fair enough," she said, following her friend. As a young woman, she'd found Thomas to be such a charming boy, filled with life even though it was tinged by bitterness. But the loss of his sister had truly changed him, and though she tried to remain cheery, it seemed forced. He was so...distant. So angry. Tight-lipped and seemingly determined to leave her to chat with herself given how often he kept slipping into silence.

Sighing, she rapped her fingers against her thigh as she stared around, taking in details of the interior of Ravensgate. "Do you live here by yourself?" she asked, obviously excluding any servants or house attendants.
