Araceli huffed out a small breath as Lith started climbing. She supposed that was his way of saying he wanted to go in. Climbing, it wasn’t exactly one of her best skills. She’d had little practice in it and wasn’t too happy about having to do it now. She would, though. Had promised Lith she’d go exploring with him.

Another forced breath out and she began her climb. Loose rocks jutted out, it seemed, every time she went to find a foothold. A few times she slipped but managed to hold on until she made it up to the edge of the cave. Her eyes widened at the cave that sat in front of her. It seemed as if the cave went on forever. As if the darkness had no end. She crouched down next to Lith. “We’ve come this far, then,” she muttered as she stood and made her way into the cave, having to stoop just a bit to fully fit into the dark cavern. “Lets go Lithian.” Ara paused, turning back towards him and giving him an encouraging smile.

Lithian blinked, attention drawn away from its distracted focus on the curious, sticky, silver-white substance clumped on some areas of the cave walls, and at Ara’s words, he nodded and stood. Small as he still was, he didn’t have to duck as he followed after her, and his eyes lingered on the globs as they moved in.

Was it possible something still lived in here?

More than simply ‘possible’ a small part of his mind provided unhelpfully and Lithian frowned as his pulse started to pick back up. Climbing in had been a rush of sorts, his confidence high, but once trapped in a dark, dank tunnel…

He breathed out, shaking his head and pursing his lips — grateful to still be behind Ara so that she didn’t see the evidence of any indecisiveness in his face — and when he passed another strange blot of substance on one of the cave walls, he lingered behind, crouching down since this one was nearer to the floor and reaching out uncertainly. What if—?

The soft clack of a falling pebble drew Lithian’s attention away from the wall, and he shielded his eyes as he looked towards what ought to have been the cave’s entrance. Instead, however, something was partially blocking it, moving in. Were they being caved in?

Lithian opened his mouth, ready to shout a warning to Ara, but then — no — the large shadow eclipsing the light of the entrance was not something so simple as a ‘rock’. Because it was moving towards them.

Lithian shut his eyes, touched his fingers to rise of his chest, and prayed to his god. Then: “Araceli!

Araceli slowly made her way into the cave, a slight bow to her back to keep from smacking her head on the rocks above. Her eyes adjusted to the darkness of the cave rather quickly. Her hand glided over the side of the cave, the cool moister clinging to the surface was a nice surprise after the desert heat. She jerked to a stop, however, when her hand came in contact with something that was not a rock.

Her gaze shot to the wall and she was barely able to make out some kind of white substance. She pinched the slightly sticky substance between her fingers and peered at it. “Lithian…” she started but was cut short when Lith yelled her name. She spun around, the webbing she’d been investigating forgotten. Eyes widened as she took in the sight of the Borgnah that blocked their way out.

“Lith!” Her voice echoed off the walls as she took off running back towards her friend and the beast readying to attack him. As she moved, the wind began swirling around her. “Lithian, get out of the way,” Ara commanded and with a sharp, flick of her wrist, honed air shot out from around her and towards the Borgnah. The attack was enough to cause the beast to falter. Another flick of her wrist and more sharp air slammed into the beast, finally causing it to groan and fall over. Her breathing was labored as she kept her stance in a defensive nature. “Are you alright Lithian?”

Fingers already at his waist and unstoppering the flasks there with the ease of a motion quickly becoming routine for him, Lithian nodded — though Araceli couldn’t see it — and shifted his stance, plucking at the water with his magic and drawing it out into two, whip-like ribbons that he spun into a single cord with a curl of his fingers.

“Fine,” he answered when he found the breath, eyes rooted to the entrance. “Was it just that one or—?”

A soft click, click, click sounded behind him, and Lithian whirled, drawing his whip of water around just in time to crack it against the head of a second oncoming beast from behind them. Behind it, two more waited, pausing only briefly when the one he’d hit tottered sideways and then hissed, pinchers twitching. Lithian breathed out, rocking his weight and rotating his hands to tug at his magic, slinging the water back again, and again, cracking first at the beast’s legs and then it’s head again until some part of it’s exoskeleton made a sickening, crunch and he grimaced as it toppled over, legs twitching.

It didn’t discourage the two behind it for long, however, and when he ventured a very brief glance in Ara’s direction, two more were crawling in through the front. His shoulders sagged.

“We're going to die,” he breathed dismally. “We're going to die and it's my fault. If we die it is my fault. I'm so sorry for dragging you here. Ysette will kill my dead body if she finds us. Or burn it. Do you think they'll just eat us and no one will have to find out because there won't be any evidence? Maybe then Ysette will be less mad. What do you think we taste like? And what if—”

Ara’s gaze shot between the two borgnah approaching from inside of the cave and the two now crawling over the dead body of their comrade. She cringed at the clicking sound as it echoed through the cave. “Lithian!” she growled out as she backed up to place their backs against each other. “Stay calm damn it. Breath. We can do this. They’re just...borgnah.” She shuddered at the sight of the creatures. Though calm on the outside, Ara was not at all happy about having to take them on. Though she had only seen them in books, their appearance had always creeped her out to no end.

“If you let your panic take you over, you will die. Don’t. I like you too much to lose you to some insects. Plus, Ysette would kill me.” Ara braced herself as the wind around her picked up. She brought her hands up, bringing them together at the same time she sent a strong gust of wind rolling towards one of the borgnah at the entrance. The wind, so strong and violent was enough to force the creature out of the cave entrance and over the edge of the cliff, sending it to it’s death on the rocks below.

Her attention focused on the other one in and instant. A twirl over her wrist and a tornado was forming in front of her. Faster, faster, faster her wrist swirled, the tornado picking up speed as she did this. With a grunt, she forced the whirlwind out, trapping the borgnah in it’s speed, slamming it against the cave walls and ceiling. The sickening sound of it’s body breaking echoed throughout the cave

Lithian steadied his breath, quieting and nodding as she spoke, his eyes locked to the two creatures approaching him. When Ara moved, he moved, whipping his water back out at the closest one to him as it hissed, focusing his assault on the creature’s long, gangly legs. Slice. Twist. Slice. Twist. Slice. He drew his water back and forth like a swinging guillotine until the exoskeleton cracked, the first beast toppling.

The second moved in on him faster, pinchers clipping and massive body practically on top of him before he could ready another attack. Lithian yelped, losing his footing briefly when one of its spiny legs caught on a piece of his clothing, but he managed to roll sidelong before it could snap at him, grimacing at the sticky grey-white residue that it spat at him — only having partially avoided it.

Was this what it bound its victims up with? How long would it take for the thing to eat him if—?

Forcibly shoving his thoughts away, Lithian rolled under the belly of the beast when it made another stab at him, then quickly scrambled out from under it, regaining his balance and stance as fast as he could manage. By the time it rounded on him again, he had his magic up, winding his water back into a cohesive cord and — with an abrupt shove — he guided all of it down the beast’s throat, causing in to stagger back several steps as it gargled. Then, shutting his eyes with a grimace, Lithian moved his arms sharply outwards and splayed his fingers, tearing the water back out of the creature’s body in every direction and causing a loud POP as its skeleton, too, cracked from the inside and a good portion of its insides burbled out.

Shaking, Lithian let his fingers drop, not even daring at first, to touch and see whether the dampness that had sprayed his face was mostly his own water or parts of the borgnah that he’d rather have never come in contact with.
