"I would not consider us friends, no," Edgar said in agreement, entering the tavern behind her. Indeed, he and Soibhan had butted heads since their first meeting, she as reckless then as now. How she could be so wrong about herself and so adamant to ignore it baffled him, and had it been anyone else Edgar would have been happy to leave her to her ignorance. But Soibhan was not anyone else; she was a woman who thought to lead a venture that involved himself and his Guardian.

As they settled at a table, Edgar glanced warily at the violinist, half hidden in the corner and hooded. One of the vagrant lads, perhaps, here to earn some coin. His presence was not entirely welcome but the sweet music from his violin, both entertaining and useful for masking their conversation, made him tolerable.

"Better than The Swan, at least" he offered with a slight smile, returning his attention to Katrana as Dardanos found himself a spot to settle in. "I quite enjoy their spruce beer. Gooseberry jam with bread. Perhaps a jugged hare and chicken fricasee." Staples of the Tasmily, all, and he had worked up a hearty appetite.

She grinned. "I'm quite partial to chicken. I've had far too much hare in the past year." Grosvenor snorted at that before he settled his great head in her lap, enjoying the idle scratches she began giving him. "And the beer sounds lovely." Even as she said it, a serving lass came up to them and took their orders. Katrana ordered a bowl of fresh greens and apples for her guardian, as they were his favorite treat.

When the young woman had left, Katrana rested her free hand on the table and gave Edgar a slight smile from behind her half-mask. "Now, good sir. Would you kindly catch me up on what has happened since the Masque?" Her voice lowered and her gaze took on a steely glint. "I left once that monster Gwyn vanished. A foolish part of me thought I could follow him myself."

Again Gros snorted, but it was more a rebuke than anything, aimed at her spike of self-loathing for having made such a silly mistake. She had missed everything that might have happened after the non-man had vanished.

Edgar watched the girl's retreat absently as he thought about how he should answer. What was there to catch her up on? "To be honest, not much," he said. It was a surprising conclusion, even for him. The past months had been spent so entirely on training that he hadn't realized that all news of the Wolves had died.

"Gwyn hasn't come back, obviously," he continued. "And the Queen has been just as mum on the matter. The Warden grounds are still being constructed, but there is still no end in sight, and nobody is quite sure what it means to be a Warden right now."

The Queen, it seemed, was doing as fine a job leading her Warden army as Soibhan was hers. At least the splinter cell had some organized training happening. Edgar wasn't sure which leader he disliked more than the other. Neither, in his mind, had the qualifications for the jobs they were trying to do. But he wasn't about to say that out loud, not when the Queen was one of the two leaders in question.

"This being a mild winter, most Chosen are too busy growing fat and lazy to care anymore. Very few people are still overly frightened of the Wolves, now that the news has stopped coming." Edgar shrugged, more out of disappointment than anything else. So many people were willing to let their Guardians go to waste by becoming careless when they would make a formidable army indeed with the right training.

"Tsk, they should know better." It shouldn't surprise her that it was happening however. Being Chosen was such an unexpected thing to most. Many of the newly Chosen were commoners or even nobility that had no idea how to fight. While the common-folk were a tougher lot and wouldn't let their guardians grow idle, the nobility were a different story.

"But I guess it shouldn't surprise me. They literally have zero direction."

Grosvenor snorted in agreement, eyeing the serving girl as she returned and set plates of food in front of them. Growling appreciatively, Katrana grabbed the cutlery, but a sensation from Gros stopped her and she remembered that she couldn't take her mask off to eat as fast as she wanted. Had she become so comfortable with this man already that she would forget such a thing?

Taking a more measured pace, she took a small bite. "Mmm. It's divine. Good choice. When you look at what's available to them, I guess I understand this Soibhan's intentions a little more, though she could be better at her execution of them."

"All men are inclined to believe the worst is over," Edgar said with a shrug. "Even if anything really bad has yet to come." The attacks from last winter were so far removed from Palisade that most people in the city related to them only as distant news, ill luck that only befell others. None of them had had to confront the terror face-to-face, and it was easier to think that it might remain that way. Unfortunately such complacency was ill-advised.

Edgar sat back as the serving girl arrived with the food. He speared a piece of hare of his fork and ate, nodding. "Always wonderful, this food," he agreed. "And she may have the right intentions, but even the best intentions burn when express them the wrong way. Sometimes nothing is better than something done poorly."

He didn't need to add that Soibhan's attempts at leadership certainly qualified as something done poorly. So poorly, in fact, that he had considered abandoning the entire venture several times. He could train on his own, after all, without having to put up with her.

Lapsing into silence as she ate, Katrana mulled over his words. He spoke the truth, to a point. Poor execution could lead to a bad circumstance turning worse, but some of the most famous battles in history had happened because of poor planning, and some of them had turned out for the best. Some would say a last stand against an enemy happened only because of poor planning, but if the sacrifice of an entire army kept the populace as a whole alive, well....It was something.

"You seem capable enough. Why haven't you challenged her for leadership?" she asked then, between measured bites of food. "Surely you could lead the whole venture better than she seems to have been doing."

Edgar watched her across the table. Briefly, the idea appealed to him. After the fiasco with the fight, enough heads had turned and enough murmurs exchanged that he might be able to rustle up enough support for a challenge for leadership. But as quickly as the thought came to him, he pushed it away. He was not the man to lead their motley crew. Power had never appealed to him and the politics that inevitably came with power interested him even less.

Still, the suggestion was enough to bring a smile to his face. He laughed and shook his head. "Not for me, being a champion of the people," he said, shrugging his shoulders. "I'm not in an ideal position to head a... somewhat illegal operation like this one."

It would be unwise to put himself in a position to reveal his birth. News like that traveled quickly, and news like that could be damaging to the others involved.
