He could tell she was trying to hide something from him, and he could guess what it was. It was no use pretending she didn't hurt, and if he had the words to apologize for it - really apologize for it and make her understand that it was a regret that haunted him - he probably would have.

Rob said nothing as he watched Tod shoot Soibhan a haughty look, as if demanding to know why the sugar had not been procured earlier, and snatched the treat from her hand triumphantly. She was right, and he was not in a position to ask for anything easy. That simply wasn't his lot in life, and he had always been alright with that. Nothing worth having came without work; Rob had learned that from the sea, and he was happy to fight whatever fights he had to in order to get what he wanted or deserved. But then again, those fights had always made sense. This one, with her, didn't come as naturally as everything else. Maybe, he thought, that was because this fight was somehow more important.

She turned, and the fawn bleated indignantly. How dare she leave so soon! He glared and stomped after her to her horse. With a curse, Rob followed, grabbing the fawn around the chest and hauling him back. A moment before she swung up, he caught her wrist. "T'isn't the first time you're runnin' away from me, Soibhan," he said slowly. "Is that easy as well?" It didn't help that he wasn't sure what he wanted or expected, either from her or from himself. And after a moment, he let go, knowing that nothing would stop her if she wanted to leave.

She heard little Tod and smiled despite herself. He was going to be a handful, alright. Maybe it was exactly what Rob needed. Helping with the little fellow was the one thing she wanted to do, but...she couldn't. Not yet. Not until she could get over Rob, and it seemed like that wasn't going to be the easiest thing in the world for her to do.

When he grabbed her wrist, she stiffened, staring adamantly at her horse's mane until he let go. Only then did she meet his gaze, as his question broke through the careful barricades she had placed within herself. Though her eyes glistened, she kept the tears at bay, and for that, she was proud of herself.

"The only thing easy about ye, Rob Tiller, was decidin' that I wanted ye fer m'own. All the things doin' with ye since tha' moment 'av been the hardest decisions in m'life te make."

Clicking her tongue, she dug her fingers into the horse's mane as the powerful creature surged to life, picking his way through the water to shore. The horse fell into a distance eating canter as she angled him back towards the city.

She didn't, couldn't, look back.
