"Pfft, can do, Captain Grumbles," she responded with a very slow, sluggish sort of salute. "Also Nevada's my girlfriend. If she's packing, I'm gone with her."

She chewed on the cap of her pen before saying, "I'll put in a good word for you though, man." It was the least she could do for the medical care right? Maybe Chel wanted to put in a good word for him because they were friends though. Maybe.

At the mention of another society, Chel let out a long sigh. "Obviously I don't know. I don't really care though." She looked at Jack. "You might have tragic womanly backstory, but I actually got it made pretty good here. Cool bow, hot girlfriend, good friends. Food kinda sucks though." She shrugged. "Would you leave if you could?"

"In this context, she would be packing what I've got to give, so~"

Oh, the eventually Twitter wars with Nevada. The lovely scathing comments and absolutely inadvertent harassment. But hey, if Chel was going to try to put in a good word for him, he wasn't going to stop her.

"No point in leaving for me, though; weapons are too nice a touch. And the possibilities in these labs . . . Well, when the damn power isn't out, I mean." Jack sighed. "What do they make you do as a Sun anyway? Beyond running around on the front lines, guns akimbo."

Chel rolled her eyes. "Ugh I hate that. There's this weird momentum that suns just rush in and start attacking. Like I wish some of them would stop for a second and think things through," she agreed with him. Some of the suns were real meatheads. But what could you do? She supposed they got things done, in their own weird way.

"Well I'm supposed to be in training so ... mostly just learning how to fight better." Whatever that meant. There were so many different training things she hadn't done yet. "Lately I think one of the hunters has it out for me. I've been to the haunted house like ... eight times. And then if I'm not in the house, I'm out getting gassed up."

She pursed her lips, clearly not happy with her arrangements. "Can't wait til I get to decide my own schedule, damn." She looked over at Jack. "What've they got you doing?"

He snickered. "Oh I don't doubt some of them do think; the brain isn't a muscle, but nearly dying a few times would make one flex it." Strategy didn't seem to fair well, though, at least not without the upper division hunters barking orders. On what few missions Jack had been on, there had definitely not been much in the way of battle strategy--no, it mostly been either devolving into friend groups, temporary pairs, or soloists.

He did not envy the Sun division one bit. It was a glorified title for cannon fodder.

"The Haunted House . . . Oh. I believe I've read about that." Touching his thumb and index to his tongue, he rifled through several pages of the report with ease. "Eight times, hmm? Well, you survived, so there's that. Gold star for you~"

(( You have an astrologically-based economy? I was not aware! How many gold stars have I received? ))

"They have me doing the usual," Jack went on to say, ignoring his partner's question. "Organizing, paper work, assorted menial trainee duties. Minipet duty," he added flatly. "Occasionally I can get a glimpse of the actual technological side of things, but for now I am still learning about runics and basic medical care."

Chel shrugged. She hadn't thought about the haunted house that way. Having survived so many times did kind of make her a super legend right? Well, anything to puff her ego that way.

"Ooh so you're a big tough nurse," she teased. "Who occasionally carries coffee. Impressive." In Chel's mind, she at least enjoyed the fact that she considered herself more useful than Jack. When in reality, she probably wasn't. "Well you can play doctor with me any time." Another tease. Or was it. It probably wasn't. She kept forgetting she needed to make sure Nevada was okay with playing nurse #2.

No wait s**t, Nevada and Jack didn't mix. This was getting too complicated!!

She tried to hand her report off to Jack. "Hey uh. Why don't you finish mine?" She then gave her biggest, brightest, sparkliest smile.

"Yes, and while you're out there pretending that dying for this cause is heroic, I am scheming things such as flamethrower runic weapons to take into battle," Jack replied smoothly. The probability of those happening now when they hadn't yet were slim, but he was still a boy at heart (that odd little organ that lied deep, deep within): playing with fire was still cool.

His dry smile at her flirt lost its warmth at her request. "And why would I do that exactly? You're a strong, independent woman, aren't you? Finish it yourself."

Chel stuck her tongue out at his rude remarks, but when he mentioned a flamethrower, even she was impress. "Uh ... flamethrower? Can I get one of those?"

No offense Tenebrae, but flamethrower was way cooler than bow and arrow.

"No Jack. I lied. I am a weak, feeble mouse that needs you to wait on me, hand and foot. And mission report." In other words, Chel was the laziest lazy to ever lazy.

"Maybe."

Followed by.

"No."

Clearly this was the time to decide that Chel was just fine and that he could make his exit. Jack pushed his chair back and slipped his clipboard under his arm.

"More like a little rat," he grumbled, turning to leave. "Good day, swift recovery, all that."

"Jaaaaaaaaaaack," Chel whined, flailing (as much as she could) when he started to leave. "Don't leave it's boring and sterile in here and-"

She let out a long sigh of defeat before holding up the clipboard and pointing to part of it. "Just ... tell me what this word is, okay?"

He didn't stop at the whining; he did pause at her question. At first Jack was going to remark on how convenient it was for her to have eye problems now rather than earlier thanks to her flash grenade of an attack, but instead he found himself turning around, coming over, and squinting at the paper.

"Takakonuma," he read out. "As in the place the mission sent us." He gave Chel a scrutinizing look. "Forgot how to read, too?"

"NO," Chel responded maturely, writing down the word he'd said, hoping to god that she'd spelled it right. "I know how to read. Sometimes it's just kinda ... fuzzy, okay?"

It would be embarrassing, if Chel had any sense of shame. "Sorry, you probably have important life things to do like carry someone's coffee or copy files," she teased mischievously. "You can go now, I'll try and figure it out."

She gave him a little wave and added, "Thanks for carrying my limp a** body back, by the way. Means a lot."

"Fuzzy"? His frown lingered, but if she was letting him go he wasn't about to contest it. "It would be remiss of any unit to leave a member behind when they are alive after a success," Jack replied with a shrug. "A waste of potential use for future missions."

Straightening up, he turned and headed out with the clipboard under his arm. "Don't get used to it," was said somewhere along the line before he turned the corner and disappeared.
