Rep was delighted that the other hunter, rather than back off intimidated, instead stepped up his game to meet the challenge he'd laid down. He didn't hurt him more for it though, instead stayed controlled, smirking as he leapt back from the quick and efficient sting of the cleaver up under his defences.

"Good." he said, actually approving. "That's how you ******** over people with huge weapons. You get as many sneaky snipes like that in as you can to their vulnerable bits."

He swung again, this time slow and wide. "And try hard as you can to move with the swings, don't fall for feints." People didn't want his advice, he thought to himself, but one of the privileges of being him was that you could say whatever the hell you wanted.

Noah stared at Rep, wide-eyed. Was the older hunter actually being ... nice? In a weird, not-particularly-kind way? Cautiously, he nodded. He was listening.

He jumped back out of the way as the blade of the axe swung lazily past him with a wash of displaced air. He got the impression that Rep hadn't been really trying to hit him this time. More of a warning swipe, or a demonstration.

He waited until Rep was about three-quarters of the way through the arc of his swing, then darted in again, the edge of the cleaver flashing in a quick stinging slice. "Like - like that?" he stammered.

"Exactly like that." Rep said with a smirk as Noah proved to be a pretty ******** fast learner.

"But the attacks are only half the battle, the rest is not getting hit. Which is easier said than done when you are ******** with bigger fish."

He brought Tracey down in an overhead swing that was a hundred percent different to the lazy swing of moments before, slamming his entire weight down behind it.

"A really ******** important thing to learn that so many people just don't ******** seem to, is when you are outmatched."

Once again, Noah went flying back. He tucked himself in and stayed loose as he hit the ground with dizzying force, his own harsh breathing mixing with Laz's silent yelp and snarl. He shook his head, trying to clear it, and raised his weapon in front of him, staring with panicky eyes at Rep. Attack? Or give in?

Laz's low, bubbly growl urged him on, pulling at his will. BITE, Laz growled.

Noah licked his lips and risked one more reckless charge, and felt the cleaver sink in. Laz's runes lit white, and Noah scrambled backwards, grinning nervously in an expression that was equal parts exhilaration and terror. He was going to deserve whatever he got.

Rep smirked a little broader. "I'd watch it if I was you man, there's only so much you can get away with."

He noted the flash of runes, though and let the momentum of his swing go well wide again.

"You should use your charge at least." He was interested to see what the other man was capable of. "Go for it."

"I think, I think I need to," Noah panted. Laz?

The weapon made a low burbling noise, and his tongue rolled out of his hilt to flop wetly across Noah's hand. Noah suppressed a wince. He'd get used to that someday. Maybe.

The runes lit up, then faded. Nothing happened. Noah looked down at the cleaver in his hand, confused, as Laz pulled his tongue back in and Noah felt a distinct sensation of sulkiness.

"Laz, what -- It didn't," he explained confusedly, and took a wary step back from Rep.

"Heh. ******** sucks when they misfire. Better luck next time." And once again he swung, trying to keep himself in check the whole while, aware that the other hunter's shield had to be getting low.

Tracey's runes flared as soon as he struck. "And now I'm charged. Don't ******** worry though, I'm no gonna use it on you. You'd probably end up injured, it's taken the arm off an intermediate."

Tracey bristled, he ignored him.

In comparison to the previous hit, this swing was just a tap, but Noah could feel the other weapon raking away a portion of Lazarus's shield, and when the axe's runes lit up, it made him nervous. What Rep said only served to turn apprehension into a deep certainty that he did not want to be on the receiving end of whatever that axe could do.

Laz growled a warning, low and throaty and displeased. Though he was human, the other man was regarding them with the avid, calculating look of a larger predator sizing up a target. There was no guarantee that they could get enough hits for a second charge, and the attempt would probably make the other hunter angry. SHOW YOUR THROAT, the weapon said grudgingly.

Noah had come to the same conclusion at about the same time. He desummoned Laz and held his hands up in surrender, ducking his head. "I give," he said meekly. "Thank you for helping me."

"Yer welcome wee man." Rep said with a lazy smirk. "Now gimme a second, going to get rid of this charge, Tracey ******** hates it when I waste them and don't use them."

He turned to face the rows of dummies along the edge of the training area, taking a slow deep breath as he steeled himself, Tracey in his thoughts hissed. Black tendrils twisted and knotted around the blade in mimicry of vertebrae and ribs, strange and shifting and the ground lit up with the etched vivid red of the sigil that heralded his artifact. The dagger blazed at his chest.

And the second he did, he snapped into action, running about half way to the dummies before he leapt, defying reasonable laws of gravity as he drove himself up and up into the air over the fields, closing his eyes as he let the fear course through him, raw power he could simply ******** bask in, every time he used it he felt like he might never need to come back down, that he could just fly for ever and ever.

But like all the elations in his life, it was simply a herald to the fall, and as his momentum faded, as he felt gravity claiming its due, he brought the enormous axe over his head and aimed it squarely down at the dummy.

He closed his eyes, letting the air howl past him as he dropped until with a crash that split the dummy in two and rent a splintered fracture into the very ground of the training fields, he connected.

When the dust settled he let go of the handle and dessumoned his weapon, dropping nimbly to the ground, giving Noah a friendly grin. "See why I didn't want to use it on you?"

Noah backed up and watched quietly but with round, very wide eyes as Rep completely obliterated one of the training dummies. The display was both impressive and terrifying, and he was very, very grateful that it was a dummy and not him. He was pretty sure - no, completely sure - that he wouldn't have survived the experience. Even Lazarus's presence seemed subdued. Learn when you're outmatched.

He'd take that lesson and keep it in mind.

"Wow," he said, a little weakly. "Yeah. Yeah, I see."

Rep looked pleased with himself and nodded. "You did good though, you picked up how to get past Tracey's defences faster than most people usually do. New I'm guessing? I mean, based on your shield and s**t." He shrugged.

"Regardless, good spar Noah." And then thoughtfully he added, "Are you friends with Al?"

Noah practically glowed with the praise, lighting up at even a scrap of approval. "Thanks! Yeah, I haven't been awake long."

He nodded to the question, smiling brightly. "He's been really nice to me. He's cool."

"Nice to you?" Rep said carefully. "Aye, he's a nice guy." He wasn't keen on anyone getting particularly close to what he considered his minions, this Noah guy was clever enough he could fill Al's head with defiance and individuality. Might even prop up his self confidence, that just really wouldn't do. "He's going to go far on this island one day - if he's careful."

"Yeah, he's smart!" Noah remained oblivious to the undercurrents. Right now, he'd been praised for good training and Rep was just confirming his opinion of his friend.

He looked back to the destroyed dummy. "Um, should I keep up with the dummies too? My muscles kind of hurt, I'm not used to this yet."

"Aye. Smart, you seem like a good friend for him, provided you two pay attention to what you're told and don't get too big for your boots."

He gestured at the dummies. "But sure, keep up with the dummies, that pain means you are getting fitter, no pain no gain, it can be the difference for you between succeeding on the battlefield and dying, so never forget the importance of it."
