Nothing? Maybe some people had the luck.

< < Or the strength. There is no such thing as luck. > >

She rubbed at her face and neck tiredly, mussing her hair as she thought. "Um . . . Library. So--reading, right?" Stormy began, naturally, from the obvious. Her brow furrowed. "Something . . . something specific?" It was like trying to grasp at something in complete darkness, knowing it was there but unable to see it.

Ami sighed. This was definitely getting nowhere. Stormy definitely remembered nothing.

"Follow me," she said pointedly, marching towards the door. The time for sitting was now apparently over, and Ami had somewhere to take Stormy. Somewhere that would hopefully be familiar.

She almost made a noise of protest--she could do it, just give her a minute or two, honest!--but she knew better than to bug Ami more. Snatching her room key, Stormy followed her out, locked the door, and then stepped lightly after the Lifer.

"Researching something?" she ventured, unable to give up. "Um, secretary?"

"Guessing isn't going to do you any good. But we were researching something. In a way." Not quite, but close.

They finally arrived at the library after some silence. Ami whipped out her personal key (something she almost always kept on her person) and pushed the door open for Stormy. "In."

Okay, a lead! Researching, researching . . . But what? The trainee's face wrinkled in further thought as she entered the library.

It was then that it hit her that she hadn't gone in a very long time. The smell of books hit her with nostalgia, hard as a brick. In fact, the last time she'd gone in was to spy on Miss Candace . . .

"In a way?" she prompted hesitantly. Maybe being on Ami's home turf would help her mood.

The smell of books was the same smell air held, for Ami's nose. Instead of focusing on her gorgeous library, she intently watched Stormy.

"Still nothing?" she said quickly. This was quickly growing desperate. She really hoped that Stormy would fix herself. She didn't want to have to take the mist to the infirmary.

Because that would mean paying a bribe.

No thanks.

Stormy was starting to get antsy at the lack of revelation. Was it possible to completely lose a memory? She realized with a pang that Nevada had completely forgotten Roland, so . . . Her hands began to fidget with one another. "What were we researching, Cap'n?" It was there, she knew it, just on the tip of her tongue and locked behind one key word or phrase.

A sigh came from Ami's lips once more as Stormy continued to disappoint.

She began the lengthy explanation that was her specialization. "We weren't researching anything directly. My specialization is the approximate translation of texts into a digital, database form. Your ebscoHost, your ... LexisNexis if you will."

The life hunter looked at Stormy expectantly. "Anything?"

She thought hard over the series of words, looking for the key. Research. Specialization. Spanish. Translation. Database. LexisNexis. Lex. Hold on-- "Mr. Lex was--part of it?" she said in a halting fashion, a flash of something catching her mind's eye. "He . . . He knew European stuff, right? 'Cause've his weapon . . . I--I asked some stupid questions, and you got mad because you didn't get a lot of sleep--"

And then it hit her with far more force than the brick of nostalgia. The memory returned almost violently, much like the last time she had recovered, and it was equally as soured. Barked orders and condescending looks, leery eyes from a handsome man that reminded her too much of him, the disdain of those complying to work with someone basically at the same level as dirt at Deus, and the desperation to prove her worth overriding the need to self-preserve.

It felt wrong against her memories just like the one of Gale, and yet she could still vividly remember everything in them as if it were real.

Her hands tightened their grip as she forced a smile. "I think I remember, Cap'n. Um, something about my artifact, I think?"

Ami's hair rose at the mention of Lex being the first thing she remembered, but it was a start. She was always suspicious and highly jealous of leaving those two alone among the shelves-

No, no. That was unfair and improbably. Focus, focus. "I was angry because of your impudence, not a lack of sleep." No, it had definitely been because of a lack of sleep.

"We were indeed looking into your ... book of 'pride' as it were," Ami continued. "But it was much more about your ... Spanish. You could translate. It was useful."

"R . . . Right. Sorry." Her mind struggled to incorporate the recovered memory back into her personal time stream, which was much like trying to force a rectangle into a square hole.

Stormy rubbed at her temples, shook it off, and turned a hopeful expression to Ami. "Does that mean I can come back to work?" she asked. "I could make up for all my absences, honest! You won't have to feed me or anything. I just . . . I'm really, really sorry it this inconvenienced you or anything."

For a very rare moment, Ami's features softened, and something of the pre-Deus Ami returned to them. "Don't grovel, Stormy. You can come back with no repercussions."

An oddly Dr. H-like grin cheshired across her face. "Though I do expect you to meet the deadlines we set nonetheless."

emotion_kirakira Miss Ami, your kind face . . . Aaaand there it went, replaced by a devious smile.

Oh . . . o-oh dear, deadlines. Yikes. Nevertheless, Stormy touched two fingers to her temple in salute. "Yes, Cap'n! Just point me in the right direction and I'll start right away!" In her somewhat jammies clothing and everything!

"Presentation first, Stormy," Ami chided, moving towards the innards of the library. "Get yourself changed, then we'll get back to work. I don't want to see your pajamas all day- you're better than Mark."

Eugh. Mark.

"Right!" The implication of even being remotely compared to Mark (given that she had seen more than a few kind selections of his naked photos of Mist women) was enough to give Stormy the dirty feeling only a shower could fix.

And a scouring brush.

The trainee zoomed off faster than one could say "creeper".
